Title: Replacing coin mechs
Post by: GregorDV on March 15, 2010, 04:17:01 pm
To properly enjoy my shiny new BYOAC tokens, I picked up a coin door on eBay, which came with a couple of .25 coin mechs (and included a 50 cent rebate jammed into one of them.  w00t!).  I also picked up a pair of 984 replacement mechs to get the authentic drop-click-clack-credit experience.

Unfortunately, my assumption (from reading a bunch of pages here and elsewhere) that coin mechs were pretty much universal ind interchangable turned out to be wrong.  The shiny metal mechs that came with the coin door sat flush against the door and were bolted on with a thumb screw.  The plastic replacements that I picked up have ~1/4" posts on the front and back, so the dont' fit into the same space.  The posts line up, but the through hole for the screw is smaller than the plastic post.

I could file down the posts and ream out the holes until everything kinda worked together, but I was wondering where I went wrong.  Is there a particular style of mech I should have bought (African vs. European), or do plastic vs. metal ones have different mounting brackets?  I want to leave a record behind so others don't make my mistakes.

Coin controls doors are semi-compatible with everybody else's mechs.  Things may jam up a little more often, but for home use, you probably don't care.  For commercial use, you pretty much only want to use coin controls mechs if you have a coin controls door.

Just hack the mounting studs on the front side off and sand/file smooth.  Should fit right in.  The mounting studs on the back should be in the right place to be held by the little retention clip.  If the stud won't fit through the clip, you can cut/file those off, too, and drill a small hole for the mounting screw.

I was able to mod my coin mechs to fit both quarters and tokens, simply by loosening a screw and sliding a piece back a bit to allow the .984 token.

Check out the stick regarding coin mechs, I posted photos there.

Then you can use the mechs that your door came with.
