Title: Good or bad Idea: Dirk the Daring mosaic
Post by: pmowry on March 13, 2010, 05:31:14 pm
I built an ultimate Arcade II cab so the side has plenty of room for artwork. My original idea was to work a picture of my daughter in her karate uniform in with fighting characters from the arcade games. But she wants no part of that.

The next idea is to take a scene from Dragons lair, reproduce it as a mosaic using 1-2"images made from the mame screenshot and titlescreen image packs. Before I go through all the work I was wondering if anyone else tried something like this.

Dragons lair is her favorite game.

What about doing simpler like taking the beautiful, original Dragon's Lair sideart file from vectorlib.free.fr and changing "Dragon's Lair" to " _____'s Arcade" using an similar font?

From my experience with photomosiac software, it sounds like it would be pretty easy to run a quick demo of what it would look like for your daughter and see if she likes it. In the end, you have to make her happy, right?

Also (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), most large-format printers that will make sideart for you will probably print at 120dpi. I'd make sure in Photoshop that the little screenshots are legible (reformat the sideart to actual size + 120 dpi).

Oh, good to know. I was doing my test images at 300 dpi. I definitely should check that first.

Just to close the thread, bad idea.  It looks good from a distance, but the room it's gonna be in is only so big and not quite the effect I wanted close up.  So after a few attempts I do not feel the result is worth the effort.
