Title: Wiring mouse buttons to push buttons
Post by: maniak on March 13, 2010, 01:53:08 pm
How do you wire a USB Trackball such as this http://www.happ.com/trackballs/565600xx2.htm (http://www.happ.com/trackballs/565600xx2.htm) to have pushbuttons for the mousebuttons?

I have an ipac4, but unfortunately all of the slots are being used up.

My question is:

Do I have to run the ground wire through the buttons that I desire to be the mouse buttons?
Where do I connect these mouse buttons to? The track ball? (I havn't ordered the trackball yet, so I am unsure of how it works)

And also: Is it possible to wire individual wires with just naked wires, no disconnects?

Please help and thanks in advanced.

Does your mouse have switches like this?

If so just solder two wires like this:

well, according to happ's website, that specific trackball supports up to 3 buttons, so i am assuming it comes with a wire harness.  if you aren't buying that specific trackball, there are several mouse encoders you can buy, such as the optiwiz from groovygamegear.  you could also open up any standard mouse and with a little soldering, create your own mouse interface

So with this wire harness.. how would I go about wiring the 3 buttons to the trackball as mouse buttons?

Should I be putting the ground wire through them along with the other pushbuttons on my control panel that are hooked up to the i-pac? (Im currently making the control panel)

I have that trackball. The harness is 'built-in' with quick disconnect ends. You just plug them into 3 switches.
They are color coded for left, right & middle mouse button. All gets fed through the usb connection. Easy peasy japanesey

You can see it here. The harness comes with 2 sets of connectors pre-wired (3/16" and 1/4") for each button.
The trackball is automatically recognized and installed by windows xp as an hid mouse or something.

Later, I disconnected the mouse button connectors and went with ipac connections, because I was having difficulty assigning mouse button functions within maximus arcade.

iirc It has a ground wire which I connected to a common chassis ground under my cp.

Click on the Intructions button. It shows you how to connect the buttons from your link.
