They are doing a remake of Clash of the Titans.
Here is the trailer on imdb.
http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi342754585/ (http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi342754585/)
I was four when the original movie and it was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
I might go see this one in the theatre. I think it might be in 3D.
-
I still hate the tag line on the first trailer they released: The Titans Will Clash. Clash of the Titans.
I hope this is good, but odds are it'll be a complete waste of time.
-
I seen a preview for it when we went to see avatar.
the original was great and I am hoping this is just as good becuase I definatly want to see this one.
-
one of my favorites as a kid and to this day...
-
Agreed. One of my favs as well. I loved all the claymation etc types like Sinbad as well.
-
yeah like jason and the argonauts was another cool one.
-
yeah like jason and the argonauts was another cool one.
Google Ray Harryhausen of you want to see all of them.
He did the stop motion for nearly every cool movie that ever used it. King Kong and Terminator (only for a few seconds) are the only two cool movies I can't think that use stop motion that he didn't do.
-
As cheesy as the original was, I'm not sure it'll be improved upon.
-
There is something magical about the original. I really like it.
Id bet it will lose all its charm... such as the playful metal owl antics.
Id probably rather see the original converted to 3d instead heh
I have hopes for the remake... but it will probably be a Titanic disappointment.
-
I think the new one looks ridiculous.
-
Agreed... I'm not a fan. When you remake the prime example of Ray Harryhausen's stop motion animation in cgi it is apparent that you have missed the point in regards to it's lasting fan-base. Now what they could have done is took the original film and re-integrated the original stop motion effects, only this time using coraline's ground-breaking "frame blending" technology which would have resulted in the same beautiful work minus the jerkyness.
In other words a new coat of paint wouldn't have been too bad, but this is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
-
Can they not create something new?
I thoroughly enjoyed the original Clash of the Titans.
There doesn't need to be another one.
What is so difficult about making new things?
I'm reliving my childhood at 35 years of age.
-
Well considering the newest original idea hollywood came up with is "Hot Tub Time Machine". I think I've just answered your question. ;)
-
It's especially bad when the economy is bad. New IP is always dangerous cos you have to educate the public from scratch. When the economy is down and ticket sales are down and investments are bleeding money, big companies fewer risks. Retreads like this have customers built-in. This thread wouldn't exist right now if Clash of the Titans was a new property.
-
Wasn't the economy bad
when the original movie was released?

speaking of that they are coming out with nightmare on elm street not part 11 0r 12 or whatever there actually going from the start again ???
I think I have seen enough of ol fredrick in my time and dont need to go through them all again.
he was freaky back then though lol.

Heh, the best retelling of his origin is the Robot Chicken skit.

I agree completely and when you think about it that is exactly what is wrong with America right now. It used to be, even in hard times, organizations and wealthy individuals had opportunities setup so that artists and inventors were still allowed to take great risks, which kept America on top. Our top export used to be ideas, not products. Now our top export is film, so you'd think the studios would cut artists more slack and allow them to create. This isn't going to happen though, because businesses which used to be regulated, often self-regulated, now are morally irresponsible and are only concerned on increasing profit margins every single quarter, even if it's IMPOSSIBLE to expand the business any further. It goes against every rule of business and as a crazy, liberal, hippy, tree-hugger it really pisses me off.
But I digress. Yup, studios won't try anything new cause they are cowardly and afraid to lose money.
-
Ive been seeing the trailers for months now. Ill definitely go see it. I wont expect the world, so i should be fine (",)

The same thing has been happening in all areas of entertainment...
First it started out with music. They made it all generic, and formulaic.
Next was Video Games. All FPS shooters for home. Dumb Drivers & Gun games
in arcades.
Now Movies. Near zero dialog. Crappy CGI. Remakes up the yinyang.
Dont forget Pinball. Wretched "TV" Themes. Low budget. No original/artistic qualities.
Almost all true art has Vanished due to Corporate Fear of Loss. There are no
risks, no art, no real effort. Just a soulless grinding of work, with a result not worthy
of enjoyment.
At this rate, the entire system will collapse in no time. I almost Pray for it every day.
Generica has Got to die. Control needs to go back in the hands of the true
creative visionary's... Not the clueless/soulless greedy money men.
My Protest is my Dollars. They will not be spent on inferior generic drivel.
-
Luckily, this sort of corporate filmmaking always results in an independent film boom.

But so true...i much prefer my HBO tv shows like Spartacus/Rome etc to the fluff passed off as movies.

Currently re-watching the entire run of Sopranos.

I watch the Sorpranos re-runs whenever I catch them. I just loaned my sets out to a buddy for his wife to watch last week. HBO seems to push the envelope a lot more than regular networks. I've heard Showtime does too but I dont have it.
-
Looks like direct to video to me.
-
The same thing has been happening in all areas of entertainment...
First it started out with music.
I actually think music is making a bit of a comeback. Bittorrent is killing the traditional model. It's getting a lot harder to just put out some produced prepackaged crap and sell 10 million albums. Successful bands are being forced to tour more, rather than just throw out an album and do a short 20-city tour every two years and then live off millions and millions of dollars in album sales. Now they have to work a little bit for their money. And the same goes for studios. They seem a lot more interested in exploiting the indy scene and plucking some of the best out of obscurity. Hopefully things keep moving in this direction.
-
Bittorrent is killing the traditional model. It's getting a lot harder to just put out some produced prepackaged crap and sell 10 million albums.
Not at all. People are willing to pay for good music.. but they are Not willing
to pay what the record companies are asking.
Firstly, the ---daisies--- have been slowly compressing the music to hell... ruining its
sound. The original reason, was to make the CDs sound louder... but its got
way out of hand... and now its merely a trick to reduce production costs. Less
detail means less editing. Now music on CDs sounds Flat and lifeless. Ive got cds
from the early 90s that sound 1000x better than the latest cds of today.
Next there is Value. You can buy an entire Movie for $10 now. The movie may
have 2.5hrs of material, which includes a full musical score... all in crystal
clear high def surround sound.
Not to mention all the other things people have to spend their money and time
on. $15 for an crappy CD (obsolete technology), that is easily scratched,
contains rootkit malware, is overpriced, poorly produced, sounds terrible...is
Not going to sell well.
Make DVD audio the standard, discs with audio only will be no more than $5.
They will sell like madd. And, because they are cheaper... people will be more willing
to spend money on trying out a new Artist.
Successful bands are being forced to tour more
LOL. Firstly, its rare that people who do not know a band, will go pay to see
them. But the funny part of what you said... is that a Band is Forced to tour
to make money. When in fact, the record companies usually have such seedy
contracts with the artists... that they dont make JackCrap selling their music.
Thus, the only way they ever have made money is by touring.
The worst part of it, is that their reps do not promote them. So, all these fans
who might be interested in seeing them on tour... will miss them cause they
didnt hear a single thing about it. It pains me to see a monolithic band like
Megadeth play these tiny venues... when they should be filling entire stadiums.
They seem a lot more interested in exploiting the indy scene
Umm... What is an Original Artists?! Indi is just another name for unrecognized
talent. They have been exploiting people since their existence. And once they
DO wrap their string around the new talent... they will turn them into
useless Mudd by their next album, by forcing them to apply their godawful
generica formula. Again, much like how Stern takes a designers input,
trashes it.. and forces them to do what He wants instead... because HE
thinks he is right... and He has the money to make that situation.
-
Bands SHOULD make a good oart of their living by touring. That's what being a musician should be about. But remember, it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll :)
Talking of which, ACDC are making a stack from touring. They refuse to rely purely on album sales (there is no 'best of ACDC' for instance) and they don't offer content for download. I didn't go to their show here a few weeks ago. But i could hear it quite clearly from maybe 5 miles away. I can say that they've still got it ;D
-
Can't add much here except second most all of what's been said. I am going to try it out, ultimately because of the 3D thing, but already I've seen things I'm not happy with.
Like what's up with the "black" Pegasus? Pegasus is a beautiful white horse with wings - or at least he was in the original by Harryhausen. Also, I've seen no signs of Calibos, which bothers me greatly as the whole thing hangs in the beginning on his wicked involvement.
The original was one of my favorites as well as a kid, and the one thing this one won't have that the original did is Burgess Meredith's masterful portrayal of Perseus' right hand man. The guy was acting rings around every single one of the leads.
Any re-rendering of the entire Medusa battle would be heart-breaking. The original was breath-taking, chilling, and amazing back in the day...and still is.
It also will be lacking the very nubile form of one Judi Bowker as the princess Andromeda....and there's no one in Hollywood right now that I can think of who could pull off those scenes the way she did.
-
I think Kiera Knightly could pull it off.
-
Saw the 2nd version of the Trailer... and I will definitely not pay to see the remake,
even with it being in Stereoscopic 3D. The CGI is godawful. The classic stop motion
looks 1000x better. Especially in the case of Medusa... which is a huge part of that
movie.
If they convert the original to Stereoscopic 3D, Id be first in line.
(Id also wager that it would make more money than the remake)
-
:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
The original is only a few steps above Robot Chicken.
-
Hey, I like Robot Chicken! Especially the Robot chicken Star wars.
-
Hey, I like Robot Chicken! Especially the Robot chicken Star wars.
So do I.
-
anyone watching tomorrow??
reviews are shaky but I still wanna see the the RELEASED KARKAN! :P
-
I will probably go see it on Sunday. I don't see anything wrong with updating and remaking old films, I watch old movies all the time and think "man they could probably do this movie a lot better with today's technology" . I don't expect it to replace the original, the original was timeless and will always be epic (to me at least) but thats not going to stop me from enjoying it if its good.
PS: I watched some of the "making of" on G4 and they did a REALLY good job of blending props and blue/green screen and CGI
-
The problem, Malenko, is not with the concept of remaking an old movie. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. The main problem is that talented filmmakers, like the one who made the original Clash, usually have their own creative ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- they want to do. The people remaking old classics just happen to be hacks 9 times out of 10. So it's not that a remade classic can't be good. It's just that it won't be.
-
I don't know about the quality of the movie itself but if there is one concensus, it's that the 3D is really poor. See it in 2d if you can.
-
I saw the original movie as kid in the theatre. Absolutely loved the movie then. For some reason, I can't get excited about it this time around. I think I've become jaded when it comes to remakes.
-

Not to mention the critical consensus (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/clash_of_the_titans_2010/) that the movie sucks.

The remake of a turd is a turd? What a surprise!!
-
The Original Clash is very far from a turd.
Its also better than probably 75% of what they have been popping out these days.
-
The original wasn't very good. Some of the stop-motion is pretty neat, but the movie itself has always been kinda slow.
-
I dont really go by reviews, especially ones where fanboyism could be an aspect. For example RT gives the 2004 Punisher movie pretty low marks but I really like that movie :dunno
EDIT: I wont be seeing clash on sunday, I just won tickets to the flyers vs redwings game, woot!
-
Yeah, it wasn't bad. Definitely better than the first Punisher movie.
-

If your age in the profile is correct, that explains a lot. In 1981, Clash of the Titans was bad ass. We didn't have all the fancy ADHD, blow ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up, don't stay on a scene for more than 30 seconds, action that we have today.
-
I saw when it came out and it was pretty good, but the more I saw it over the years, the less I liked it.
And I hate all the ADHD stuff of today. I love my movies good and slow. (and if I go to the movies, the movie had better be at least 2 1/2 hrs to get my dough)
-
i take offense... i could watch things blow up all day :lol
-
if I go to the movies, the movie had better be at least 2 1/2 hrs to get my dough
The ---fudgesicle---? That's like the most insane thing I've ever read. 2 1/2 hours is WAY too long for some movies, including some very good movies. You're seriously telling me that Wedding Crashers should be 2 1/2 at least 2 1/2 hours long? ? ?
-

I don't usually go to the movies for that sort of stuff. I just wait for the DVD.
We don't go to the movies very often, but when we do, it's usually for certain types of films (for instance, Grindhouse)
-
Grindhouse, by the way, was awful. It was better than Deathtrap. But neither was good. Both, in fact, were pretty bad. The fake movie trailers were the highlight of the experience. That doesn't say much.
-
Like was already said... seeing a movie when you were 11 and being wowed by it doesn't mean it was great. I finally watched Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure again last night (first time since originally seeing it in the theatre). Holy crow, why did I originally like it?!? Yikes. Low point of George Carlin's career. And for that matter, why did directors keep giving Keanu more work?!
-

Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof) was great. It was one of the best experiences we'd ever had as a group at the movies.
-
Shrug. Planet Terror (what I was thinking was Grindhouse, I guess) was at least campy and had some fun parts, but I didn't think it really succeeded at what it was trying to do. Death Proof was just a gigantic bore from beginning to end.
-
Planet Terror was spoofing John Carpenter movies, and as a Carpenter fan, I think Rodriguez did an excellent job.
I can see saying you were bored with Death Proof....but all the way through? The car chase was fantastic (it was no To Live and Die in LA, but it was very well done).
-
The car chase was the best part, of course, and it was technically impressive in terms of the stunt-work (I sort of have the impression that the whole movie was an ode to unappreciated stuntmen and women). But I just didn't care about any of the characters at all. And, in fact, I was still reeling from the fact that they had left their friend behind to be raped by that redneck. Or had they? . . . my memory may be fuzzy on that. At any rate . . . I was so bored by the time the car chase took place that it did little to pique my interest back up. And then the fight at the end was just retarded. I was surprised they didn't all jump in the air for a group high-five and yell, "Girl power!"
Oh yeah . . . the worst thing by far about the movie is that as is typical of Tarantino, it was filled with lots and lots of dialogue. Normally his movies have seemingly pointless dialogue . . . just every day banter, but it's so real and interesting and funny and sharp. The dialogue in this movie seemed perfectly authentic and real, but it was insufferably tedious. Just chicks talking about lame lame personal, uninteresting ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.
-
And, in fact, I was still reeling from the fact that they had left their friend behind to be raped by that redneck.
Yeah. He's supposed to be the same character from Kill Bill vol 1 that pays Buck to let him have sex with The Bride while she's in a coma.
It ended the way a lot of films used to end. Bad guy dead....THE END. It's by no means a great film (it's Quentin's worst, but I still love it), but the second half is great (I love car chases -- hell, I own Short Time with Dabney Coleman because it has one of the best car chases not shot by William Friedkin).
-
Saw the movie tonight. Pretty good action-adventure.
Never saw the original.
-
I saw it in 3D because I got invited to a free screener.
action / story / cg is ok... not impressive... (given that my last movie at theater is imax 3d avatar...)
I would not pay to go to theater to see it...
to me, this is a home theater dvd movie...
I think I saw the original long time ago from like tv re-runs...
my memories of it is I do like it....
just added it to my netflix so that I can watch it again...
oh... and one thing...
on this one... when they have fast fighting / action...
it seems to me like the 3d effect is a little jittery....
-
I had absolutely zero interest in watching this movie until I just watched the trailer on Youtube and noticed that Pete Postlethwaite's in it. Can't be all bad? I may go see this.
-

He does add points to any movie he's in.

+1
I almost started to think he did it on purpose.. so when the girls get killed, you get some sorta satisfaction from it. Which I did.. but still came out not liking it and only bought the planet terror movie and soundtrack.
I saw this Clash remake in 2D yesterday. Didn't care that much for it. Did anyone like the original better..? I still have yet to see it
-
Went to see it yesterday.
I thought it was pretty good, but maybe not worth what it cost. (10.50 per ticket)
The effects, IMO, were pretty good.
I watched it in 3d, and I was not impressed with that. (But, take into account that the last 3d movie I saw was when I took my then young daughter to see Spy Kids 3D, and Titans 3D was a lot better than that piece of crap.)
Someone mentioned the metal owl. It is briefly in this film, but I thought the owl was a bit silly in the original movie, so Im glad they cut it.
The blind witches, IMO, were not as good as the original, but the scorpions were much better, as was Pegasus and the Kraken.
-
went and saw it, it was good. It was not great, its definitely a watch on DVD/On-Demand. Some of the CGI was pretty bad, and the fight scenes were pretty average. Some cool effects, I got a chuckle at the OBVIOUS Original Movie reference. Its right on par with the first, I mean the first will always mean more to me because it was so magical in my youth, but this one wasn't a let down. I expected average and that's what I got.
-
R2D2 and C3PO was also "silly", but Starwars probably just would not have
been the same without them. That touch of lite comic relief really helps a movie
from becoming too serious.
Just as the Metal Owl, had this quirky & funny personality, really helped bring
the movie that much more to life. (and seemed a bit more fitting than a rolling
trashcan that appeared to have no way to navigate stairs)
I remember as a Kid watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and not liking how
they were Always happy and smiling. However, Ive seen an episode of the remade
TMNT, and they are always Fierce looking. I dont know why, as a
director/creator, you wouldnt want to portray at least some sort of realistic emotions.
Maybe the Happy gen kids grew up angry, and made the Turtles Angry just to
counter the babyish pampering and phony moods portrayed in the past.
ehh
IMOP, the Metal Owl doth Rule ;D
-
Watched it and while not great it certainly wasn't as terrible as I had feared it would be. I also have to agree with Ginsu in that I prefer a long movie (given the right genre)...A good fantasy or SF movie almost always deserves to be 2 1/2+ hours long.
I would have watched Lord of the Rings even if they were 4 hours each...no problem :)
-
Shrug. I think it depends far more on the quality of the director, the depth of the story being told and so on. I mean, Das Boot was like 3.5 hours long or something and every second was riveting. U-571, on the other hand, not so much. A 3.5 hour U-571 would have been horrifying. I suppose there's probably some correlation with genre since, for example, comedies are not usually telling deep stories with complex characters and story lines. But every minute of extra Phantom Menace footage would have made the movie even worse than it already was. Or Battlefield Earth. My god. Even Lord of the Rings. They're pretty good movies but The Two Towers in particular would have been better with some more editing and maybe ten minutes or so shaved off. 2001: A Space Odyssey would have been considerably better if an hour or more of the film had been left on the cutting room floor.
-
SPOILER ALERT
Me & some friends went to go see it...and I thought it was a good adventure flick, I was blown away just because "I'm seeing the remake" and then i realized it when i saw the ending credits...It was a piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- wrapped in shiny gold pretty foil!...There were so many continuity problems and holes in it that ticked me off...Top of my head...
1. In the original, It was Poseidon who was the one who started everything. Remake was Hades...
2. What was up with the Gay blurry armor on Zeus?...
3. Hades, played by Ralph Fiennes, was basically Lord Vordemort playing Hades, playing Lord Vordemort...For a min there i thought he was going to do the "Red Dragon" scene at any min...
4. It took the group 10 days to get from Argos to the Stygian Witches...but it took Perseus and Pegasus to get back to Argo within 5 min.
5. I wanted to slap the cult leader (leaded the rioters)
6. Apollo was gay...
7. Perseus was a fisherman, but give him 2 mins of sword training, and he becomes a jedi...WTF?
8. Perseus can break through the body of a scorpion like tearing into a wet paper bag...but can use the armor against Medusa?
9. Wood man with exploding heart....WTF?
10. I felt like I was watching Qui-Jon instead of Zeus...
In the end, we were disappointed because we were comparing the original to the remake...and yeah, the original wasn't a great film, but it was a blockbuster when we were kids...and we kept that "vision" as a child as awesomeness...I was just disappointed...
-
It sort of sounds like you liked it right up until the point where all your friends started talking ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on it. Stand up for yourself man! ;D
-
watched it earlier. wasnt bad at all. pretty good actually. I dunno what most people were expecting but I knew it was gonna be silly and heard about 2.5D too. I dunno why people are complaining about clash while harry potter movies get away with 2 hours of random nothing and 10 minutes of mediocre CGI.
sam worthington yelling > everyone in harry potter movies combined
-
1. In the original, It was Poseidon who was the one who started everything. Remake was Hades...
And if it was still Poseidon people would complain it was exactly the same.
2. What was up with the Gay blurry armor on Zeus?...
It was their "Godly Armor" If they were in cloaks you'd say it was Quai Gon Jin (no Im proud to say I dont know how to spell that right)
3. Hades, played by Ralph Fiennes, was basically Lord Vordemort playing Hades, playing Lord Vordemort...For a min there i thought he was going to do the "Red Dragon" scene at any min...
Ummmm... I didnt draw any similarities and am Im glad I didnt hafta see his ball bags again.
4. It took the group 10 days to get from Argos to the Stygian Witches...but it took Perseus and Pegasus to get back to Argo within 5 min.
Flying usually always takes less time. Would you prefer he didnt make it in time? That woulda been a twist of ending though.
5. I wanted to slap the cult leader (leaded the rioters)
I think that was the idea.
6. Apollo was gay...
I saw no man love on screen, dont know where you got this.
7. Perseus was a fisherman, but give him 2 mins of sword training, and he becomes a jedi...WTF?
Agreed, that bugged me too.
8. Perseus can break through the body of a scorpion like tearing into a wet paper bag...but can use the armor against Medusa?
the sheild was made from the claw, the body is softer, I guess
9. Wood man with exploding heart....WTF?
I actually liked that part, wasnt expecting it. I was asking myself what was goignto happen to the guy if Medusa got him.
10. I felt like I was watching Qui-Jon instead of Zeus...
:dunno Did you say that when you watched Taken too?
In the end, we were disappointed because we were comparing the original to the remake...and yeah, the original wasn't a great film, but it was a blockbuster when we were kids...and we kept that "vision" as a child as awesomeness...I was just disappointed...
Sounds like you were expecting way too much
