Title: PC Post screen Hang Up
Post by: Kevin Mullins on March 04, 2010, 12:55:52 pm
This may not be software related, but I need some PC suggestions.

Putting together a little touchscreen game thingy, running WinXP and such, but during the post it kinda hangs at the pictured screen for a bit, everything else is smooth and fairly quick for what the hardware is.

Can someone give me an idea what the PC may be doing during this portion of the boot sequence so maybe I can find some tweaks or things to shutoff, etc ?

Thinking this is where NTLDR comes into play as part of the second stage ..... boot.ini and all that .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booting#Second-stage_boot_loader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booting#Second-stage_boot_loader)

Wonder if there are memory settings somewhere I can finaggle to speed this process up?
Or switches to add/remove from the boot.ini ?
BIOS stuff maybe..... I dunno, gonna go poke around.

Had me a cup or two while waiting on it.  ;D

Actually......I'm feeling about like a dumbass now.....  :P

I still had the BIOS set to boot from a CD, so it was spending that time searching for a disk before it skipped over to the harddrive.
AND..... I have one game I'm still trying to see if I configure to play without needing the CD for it..... so that disk was still in the drive and I'm sure that wasn't helping... it kept looking at the disk for something useful to boot with I'm sure.

Shaved a good full 10 seconds off the boot time.
Heck, don't even SEE that screen anymore.
