Title: I-PAC shift question + others
Post by: IG-88 on July 26, 2003, 07:25:44 pm
O.K. got my i-pac hooked up with all my buttons and a joystick. I figured out how to use the "test" thing with notepad. Now I have the it (i-pac) stuck in the "shifted function". Now how do you get back to the regular button mode?
ie: unshifted

Also, since I've been playing games for ages on my desktop with only a keyboard, I have changed inputs for most of the games I like. How can I set them back to the 'default' settings that they originally come with in MAME?

Help anyone?

Just put back the IPAC in deault (jumper). Then its back to MAME default keys.

And how do you do that? I never moved any jumpers to begin with, all I changed were which keys made you jump, fire, ect. I'm not seeing what you mean here.

IPAC comes default with MAME default keys. This jumper in set to default. In that mode, you can't change it to anything you like. If you like to change it, then you need to set IPAC to ALT and re-program the IPAC to your liking, If you still don't know what I'm talking about, I suggest you read the MANUAL/DOC about IPAC on ultimarc web page.

He means the settings in MAME itself, not in the IPAC.

To do that, delete all the files in the "config" directory.

I think the answers you got may have missed your point.  Are you saying that all you can press now are the few "shifted" keys that IPac comes set up with (like Escape, 'P'ause, etc.)?  If you hit the player 1 button #1 you get nothing?  That makes no sense, especially if you didn't touch the jumpers.  Could be a defective board.  Go back in notepade and hit your buttons and joystick and see what you get.  You should only go into shift mode when you want to - hitting the Player 1 start button - then when yopu let go of the Player 1 start button it should back to normal automatically.

Yep. This exactly whats going on. I emailed Andy Warne and he thinks I have a shorted start 1 input. Weird thing is tho that when I use the 'test mode' in notepad it shows up just like all the others, ie no shorts. I even tried a different cherry microswitch....same problem. I don't know......

Otherwise, thanks to "TheGatesofBill" thats eaxctly what I was needing. Now just to find that config file....

If you go into Notepad and all your buttons react as they should, then there can't be anything wrong with the IPAC or your player 1 button.  Notepad should give you the exact same results that you would get in MAME - that is unless you changed your MAME keys (i.e. instead of your player 1 button 1 being left-CTRL, in MAME you changed Player 1 button1 to be something else...).  If the keys work in Notepad, the issue would have to be with your MAME software.  The IPAC could care less if you are in Mame or Notpad, it acts the same.

Good point. I'll try and get rid of those config files later this week and see if that does it. I'll post back afterwards and let you know how its going.

That is of course correct about Notepad. But there is another issue here: The I-PAC has a special test mode (invoked by ctrl-alt-P) which, when you press a button, displays the description of the key on the screen in text. It displays the normal key and any shifted key which the button is programmed to. I think the original poster was using this mode and misunderstood the format of the displayed output.

That did it. Config files gone, problem gone. Who knows what the heck I changed over the past year, but it's all good now!   :)
