Title: Metal control panels - how thick?

So, I gather steel is supposed to be 16 gauge. 

What about aluminum?  Anyone ever used aluminum?

I used 10 ga. aluminum since I found some drop on the shop floor, 12 ga. likely would have worked just as well.  The 10 ga. feels solid and is easy to work with, have used it for both regular panels (24" wide) and cocktail panels (around 12" wide).
