Title: V-RAY
Post by: painterinfo on February 28, 2010, 09:30:41 am
I have just taken my Sketchup skills to a new level and I recon this video conveys my DooM arcade machine concept pretty well.

Arcade of DooM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oqIMvz9L90#)

I have been playing with the V-Ray plugin for Sketchup over the last couple of days and decided to see how I real I could make my Arcade of Doom model look.

I still have a fair bit of room for improvement in realism and model's design, but I drew the controls from scratch and I recon those buttons look indistinguishable from real ones.

Cheers

Wow. Impressive stuff. You're absolutely right about the buttons.

Is that a window above the kick plate (so you can see inside at the subwoofer?)

If so, very cool idea. Are you going to light that somehow?

Hi drventure,

Notice the reflection of the flag stones on the surface of the window, you can't do that with just Sketchup.

I have drawn 10mm plexiglass but the final design will be stronger with smaller view port.
Re lighting (all can be done with V-Ray) I was thinking a dull green glow, maybe driven by sub.

Awesome job!  :applaud:

As one of the biggest fans of the Doom franchise, I have to say this is an amazing cab. Great work... my only concern is how well would doom actually play on an arcade machine, with a joystick instead of mlook? Either way, very original, and I'm somewhat jealous.

Thanks, it is only an idea at the moment, purely computer art.  I have played Doom on my arcade machine and it plays ok, though some of the controls are not optimal. Re mouse look and the joystick, my idea is to only use the joystick (4way mode) as extra buttons. Trackball as mouse look. Fire buttons as navigation.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) is the inspiration I guess.

Oh dang! I +have+ to try that kind of setup with EDuke 3d!

Very cool. Another reason Grosse Point Blank was a great movie! ;)
