Title: OLD: Nintendo Pelxi Glass - NEW: what was this?
Post by: mr_doles on February 27, 2010, 11:21:30 pm
Back story…I just bought a Nintendo cab, I will be the first to admit that I overpaid, by a lot, but I have been scanning craigslist forever and finally decided just to get something.  Now he wanted $350 for it but the monitor and speakers were shot so I said $250.  When I saw it we agreed to drop to $175 but $75 would have been way more appropriate.  He said it was a "hideous" orange when he got it so I am thinking Donkey Kong 3 but the monitor is burnt in (BAD) with Pac-Man.  It was painted black and made into a Mortal Kombat II (don't ask).  The PCB does works, though I am having issues with the sound.  My plan is to MAME it, in a non destructive way (I repeat a non destructive way) until I figure out what direction to go in.  Regardless there are some things I need no matter what I do with it.  The biggest thing is the plexi glass for the monitor.  Anyone know where I can get a hold of one, for a decent price? (don't have the tools to cut it myself)  The second item is the top marquee bracket/holder.  Mikes Arcade has them for $17 and arcadeshop has them for $15 but that just seems like a lot for what it is.  Maybe I am just being cheap after dropping so much on the cab  :banghead:.  I figure someone has to have a used one for less.  Also I have seen a lot of DK restorations anyone know how many feet of T-Molding this thing needs?  Well I'll stop with the questions for now.  Thanks

I'm working on my DK scratch build now and about to buy the marquee and bezel holders from mikes arcade. As for t-molding 20ft will be plenty. For the glass, i'm not sure. I'd like to know the same thing. Part of me thinks that the DK bezels come with the tinted glass since they are usually $50+. if anyone has info on this I would like to know as well.

I have been pouring over the internet and have discovered that the Nintendo bezels do indeed come with the glass/plexi.  That means I need to decide what I want before I get the plexi.  Found some on ebay but they are not the best condition.  Here is one for DK JR with a big heart scratched in it...guess that is why it is $1

I wonder if that could buff out with some plasti-x. I would prolly just buy a new one tho but $1 might be worth trying to buff it out

20 ft. of t-molding will get the job done (although I was a little worried after applying it to the first side).  As for the bezel, I'd just buy a new one from Mike's Arcade.  It is expensive but if you are planning to have this cab long-term then an extra $40 or whatever isn't going to matter in a few years (it does add up though!).  Also, the pic you posted is the bezel for DK Jr. (I'm not sure if you are planning to restore it to an original DK or not).  I restored a DK but it is running MAME on the inside - you can't tell unless you are told.

FYI - Posted two pictures of this thing.
Also, the pic you posted is the bezel for DK Jr. (I'm not sure if you are planning to restore it to an original DK or not).
Yeah I was just saying that they usually come on the glass and was using that one as an example.

I think that I am going to slowly get parts to restore it to a donkey kong.  Going to MAME it for the short term though.

Believe you me I read that restore last night and that is what made me decide to go that route.

Is there any way to tell what is was originally?  There are two Nintendo plates (see pic) on the back one has a model # of DJR1-UP-US and serial # of 14779.  The other is model # MGS-UP-US and serial #25382 PAK.  I think that DJR1-UP-US is Donkey Kong JR, but I don't know what the other is for.

OK so this is what I got so far:
This is a Nintendo cab and it was originally orange and has a 7-slot speaker grill.
Currently a Mortal Kombat II board with Mortal Kombat artwork.
Monitor has Pac-Man burn in
There are 2 Nintendo Plates:
1 stamped Nintendo CO., Ltd Model DJR1-UP-US
1 stamped Nintendo of America Inc Model MGS-UP-US
From what I am reading DJR1 is Donkey Kong Jr. and MGS is a V/S conversion.

Monitor is Electrohome Electronics Model# 19" Col Gam Mtr Product # 38-G07904-KM Chasis# G07CB0 with a RCA sticker.
The back door artwork says DJR1-UP 2 P.C Boards Type.  It also has dip switches for number of Juniors, again leading me towards DK JR.
Not sure if this is important but there are 5 bolts on the sides of the cab, 3 going up at an angle and 2 close together in the back.  The 2 in the back for when the monitor was vertical and the 3 diagonal the switch to horizontal.

From what you are saying that was originally a "Donkey Kong Junior" that was then converted, who knows how many times.

What's the height of the cabinet?(They were smaller than the Donkey Kong cabs).

That said. I have a DK cabinet with all the parts needed to restore it. But honestly, I'd rather have a tempered glass monitor cover as opposed to the original Plexi-Glass which was prone to scratches.

67" floor to top.

The marquee was the reason I was interested in the forst place.  I have a mortal komat cab (19" dynmo cut corner) with a UMK marquee and I thought hey I can take that marquee.  Yes I know (now) it is a lot smaller so it would not have worked anyway but still.
