I'd check www.dealsea.com everyday.  I got a new 30GB for $20 a few weeks ago after 2 mail in rebates.  Have seen 40GB and 60GB drives going for around $40 - $50 after mail in rebates once in awhile.

I have some drives sitting in my drawer at home that you can just have. Don't know how large they are, though. For all I know they may be the size of your 1.5GB. I check it when I get home today.

Ooh!  You have any 1G range I could have?  For whatever reason, all my hard drives are stone cold DEAD!  Well, they spin, but don't work.  Strange, as they were all working fine when I stored them.

Where they western digitals? ;]
I've never had luck with WDs, and from my experience, the only people who think they're great are basing their opinion off the price they got it for and 10 minutes of use.

My local staples had 30gb for 30$ a few days back (Maxtor).30gb is a very decent size for a drive who's primary existance is storing your OS.

Nah, they were all 500M.  One was a Seagate, one was a Maxtor.  Very old, but when I put them away, they were all working fine.  Not sure what happened, they were all stored in different places.

Well if the hard drive doesn't spin up fast enough then the head can't read the data from the plate. I would figure a guess that the leading cause of dead drives is an old motor that just can't spin fast enough to read anymore. However, it will still try to spin up so it would sound like it's working.

My hard drive is starting to make a "clack" sound, though, like something is dropping in it. Harddrives usually lightly click, but this is like "click...click.. cliCLACK" The same thing happenned to a drive at work the day before it died on me.  :-\

I figure I've got a couple days to move everything before my MP3 collection is toast (again). I already had to rebuild it once from a HD crash...  :P
