Yeah.
I've played almost
all of these.
"Amateur" Japanese games
are great fun.
There's some quality fighters too.

can you recommend some of the fighters?

and, do you know about any official japanese shmups for pc? I was thinking of checking out play-asia to see if some were worth buying

These were all free on the Doujin Soft website, but now the site is just a forum and I can't find the games anywhere. I still have a few of them, but deleted the 16 GB worth that I did have (because I thought I would be able to just get them again...dammit).

Ether Vapor is great.  I also have Touhou - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.  Raiden III is a great game too for PC CD Rom.  Hard to find in English though.  I bought the English version a few years ago at a Japanese website, which is now out of business.  :(

shateredsoul,
This place has many
doujin games.
http://amit.dabydeen.com/doujin.html (http://amit.dabydeen.com/doujin.html)
You need to have patience though,
because this dude linked youtube videos
to every game, so it takes a looooong time
to load up.

As for fighters.
Check out Vanguard Princess.
It's a free all girls fighting game
supposedly made by a former
Capcom employee.
Very well made game.

The only problem is that a lot of them are only 1 player.

I am big fan of these. Got own section in hyperspin for this kind of games. Last week I finished dling pack of over 400 Doujin games. Got next week free from work so might got time to finally sort out fighters and shmups and other stuff.
Only downside is that usually text is japanese. Still menu screens and options are luckily pretty often english, or at least understandable. There are some sick videos on youtube, try search words: bullet hell.

The particular Touhou game that I mentioned (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) was translated to English, so there's a patch out there that makes everything "readable".  Also, what's cool about it (not sure if this is true in other Touhou type games) is that there is a button that "slows" you down so that you can dodge more accurately when needed.  Very cool.

See Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in action here:

By the way ... this video is SICK!  Bullets are crazy!

We had one of the Touhou 2 player games running on my cabinet last year at Quakecon 2009.  It was a BLAST to play.  I have since collected the whole Touhou series of games and will eventually get them setup on my cabinet.

These Doujin ones look great too.

Nice! Tohou looks great

One word of warning for the Doujin games though.. I found this great thread that had a bunch of these games, but had files that were detected as trojans. So if you download make sure it's from a safe source.

Wow thanks! These games look awesome.

Has anyone figured out how to make the games fullscreen? I went into the screen.txt file for eden and noticed it said something about fullscreen but the rest was japanese.

In that same file I noticed there was a 1,  changed that to "0" and it's fullscreen but there's a lot of borders around the whole play area (on top and on bottom too)
