Title: C64 on a cab?
Post by: Necro on February 20, 2010, 10:15:13 am
Anyone setup a C64 emu on their cab?  I'm curious as to how you setup the input/configuration with the wildly different key setups that might be used in C64 games to get things started.

I HAVE to use MESS (cab with a mirror) so...that might play a role in how I need to set things up.

(Setting up the emulator I'm cool with...it's just the logistics of getting the input working I'm trying to get my head around...)

That link has some links to remove loading time in winvice... essential for c64 on an arcade cab.

I have c64 games on my cab.  They work amazing.  Some of my favs are on there!

What do you do for input, just set a bunch of the 2nd player controls to random C64 keyboard keys?

While you can run c64 games on an arcade cab, they are console games, so run them on the tv and sit a spell.  The plug-n-play c64 game has all the best games, costs next to nothing, and was designed by the original c64 team (so the device IS a c64, not an emulated mess).  That's what I'd reccomend, but that's just me.

All of the joystick controlled games work fantastic on a cab.  Here are some fantastic cab friendly C64 games:

Archon series (awesome 2 player)
M.U.L.E (awesome 2 player)
IK+ (awesome 2 player)
Summer Games (all the games series basically) (awesome 2 player)
Gianna Sisters
Turrican
Boulderdash
Bruce Lee (awesome 2 player)

In general as long as you stick with the joystick games you will have no issues...the keyboard input ones which tend to be strategy/Rpgs etc aren't cab friendly anyways so no big loss.

As for Emus...I use Winvice.  Not a lot to configure if you stick to joystick based games.

Howard,
Totally agree with you but I'm just trying to 'explore my options' as it were.  That and I'm a bit nervous about 'cutting into' the CP's I have and formalizing my first CP design. :)  (Have to finish the graphics first anyway).  As I'm testing out and designing my FE 'skin' I just wanted to test out MESS and see if it's doable to have a few favorites on there since they play very much like arcade games anyway.

That and the 'Games' games are some of my favorites of all time. :)

I've got the entire Gamebase64 collection (http://www.gamebase64.com/search.php?h=0) (over 21000 C64 games) on my cab (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=70093.0).  All setup to run correctly with a variety of C64 emulators (I believe MESS is one of them, but WinVICE is generally best) and all showing screenshots/game information, and utilising all the joysticks/buttons nicely.

For more info on how/why I did this, see here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98108.0), or drop me a PM.

Jimbo, thanks for the link.  I actually have seen your posts and am debating setting that up like that (in the process of grabbing the collection).  Biggest concern being my mandatory use of MESS (I need the flipx option in my cab since it's a mirror cab).  I'm trying to figure out, aside from a if/then/else batch file, how to properly run all the games on MESS of different formats (tapes, disks, quickloads).

As I progress, I may drop you a PM to find out how a few things are done :)  Thanks for the offer.

No problem.. I think there already exists a GameBase MESS script to run all the games from GB64.  If you get the latest collection (v7), and you use the latest version of GameBase (in beta right now) to export it into a cab-frontend-friendly format you should be able to tweak that script to get it to do what you want, and still run most of the games on your cab with the optimal settings and correct controls, etc.

PM me nearer the time and I'll be glad to help.

Also, you could try contacting the VICE team and ask if they can implement the flipx option in WinVICE.  I believe they release builds fairly regularly unless I'm mistaken, so I guess it's worth a try.
