Title: basic drawing/paint game to be used with arcade controls?
Post by: severdhed on February 19, 2010, 05:40:05 pm
My wife and I took our two kids to Chuck E Cheese's for the first time the other day for my oldest son's birthday (he is 3).  while we were there, one of use would  spent a good bit of time in the toddler area with our 1 year old son, while the other chased the 3 year old around.  in the toddler area, there was a tiny arcade cabinet with an 8way joystick and i think 2 buttons.  it was basically a drawing game, you would move the joystick and it would draw a picture. the coin mechs were messed up so we couldn't actually play it, but both kids really seemed interested in it.  i believe one of the buttons switched between available colors and I'm not sure what the other one did.  Both of my kids love to climb up on chairs to pound on the control panels of my cabinets at home, but they always end up hitting wierd button combos that delete games off of my game list, and who knows what else.  they both seemed to be drawn to this small cabinet because it was just their size.  my wife said i could build them one, but i would have to find some kind of really simple game to put on it...at least for now.  i was thinking that if i could find something like that drawing game where they could just walk up and move the stick and draw a picture, it would be awesome.  i need something like a stripped down version of MS paint or something i guess..any ideas?

last night i found my SNES and had my 3 year old playing Mario Paint.  he still struggles a little with some things, but he was managing to draw pictures and change colors with the mouse...so i think he would really like something like this.  plus i would love to have a reason to build a mini cabinet.  it could always be upgraded with more functionality at a later point in time.

is there something like this available?

I would look for a simliar game made for the PC.  Then create an ISO of the disc, load it from Daemon Tools (to simluate a disc is in the drive) and then mapp the controls to your Mame joysticks and buttons.

You have quite a few options...a lot of the early paint programs for computers like the C64 or Amiga had joystick support...im fairly certain that Deluxe Paint for the Amiga supported joystick...you could install the Winuae emulator and have it setup to launch automatically.

Some others include GTIA Joystick Painter for the Atari 800...which again you could run on a computer emulator and its very primitive and easy to use and sounds like what you would want.

Something like TuxPaint (http://www.tuxpaint.org/)? Its a pc thing so you would have to do a bit to make it joystick controlled but its very kid friendly and they might have fun with it.

Or go for the low-tech Arkanoid-spinner option:
