Title: Modern Cabinet Designs?
Post by: shateredsoul on February 17, 2010, 06:08:00 pm
Does anyone have a modern cabinet design?

I saw a recent design by a guy who was designing a very nice looking arcade cabinet.  I can't find i his thread anymore, but it mounted a lcd tv and his original arcade was featured on some hobby magazine.

I also saw TAZ's design which I thought was very nice.

Does anyone have any other posts to similarly nice designs?

I don't know if it's considered modern, but the design is very "sleek"

Right now if I was to build another cabinet that is for two players using an LCD I would probably go with the VEWLIX design.

I would probably design the control panel from scratch using iL joysticks and buttons.  Not HAPP, that's right there is a difference ::)  I never liked japanese sticks or buttons like Sanwa but the Seimitsu buttons are very nice but I am very pro HAPP/iL as you can see from all my projects.

Here is a link from the SRK forums of Cicada's VEWLIX build from scratch and used two Madcatz TE sticks which he gutted and flush mounted to the control panel.

It's really nice and he is almost complete and at this stage right now

iAtoria: wow that looks nice! I would definitely like something like that.. wow.  That is definitely something along the lines of what i was thinking.. "sleek"

mwong: I think I saw those before, I just didn't like that they were sit down.  Have you seen a standup version anywhere out there?

I don't know if it's considered modern, but the design is very "sleek"

Does anyone know where I can find a sit-down cabinet design, like the Mortal Kombat 2 cabs?

I'm currently playing around with designs for a minimalist stand/cabinet w/ an LCD.  Currently it only exists in Sketchup, but hopefully in a month or two I'll have something more.

I cant help but say, that all these so called modern cabs look gaudy ugly... And they have glaring design flaws, such as No tilt on a standup control panel.  Or Monitors that are too close to a person, & or monitors that are completely vertical, when they also should have a more direct angle matching the players viewing angle. (else it gives eye strain from different focus depths, thus leading to headaches)

I remember you were saying a while back how it royally upset you when people put down other peoples projects here because they had a different opinion about control panel layout. I'm not saying you aren't entitled to give your opinion, but I would think that you would be a little less callous about it considering that these are projects from members here and your opinion on style, control panel angle, and measurement is really no different than someone else's opinion on control layout.

That said, I do prefer classic style cabinets myself, but there is a different breed of monitors available today than 10, 20, 30 years ago and I think that some of these cabinets are very fitting for what there is to work with today.

Agree, modern style, fits modern hardware, still looks like something that would be found in an arcade.  Don't forget about the knievel Evo, which is what I built.  more depth for the agressive player or larger CP.  Also, more depth lets you make a wider cab/larger display and keep it in proportion.

I thought the woody and evo were about the same size.  Do you have dimensions for the Evo?  I was *JUST* about to start a cabinet for a relative and was planning on something like the evo, but I didn't have measurements, so I was going to build a woody with softer edges.

Link in my signature.  also search for Evo and Evilnuff, a user who did a sketchup drawing of the evo cab.  It's basically a woody plus 3 or 4" of added depth, with rounded corners.

Here's my current design, more of a modern interpretation of the traditional cab than a futuristic space ship
