Title: Amp Help Needed pleeeease!!
Post by: Nacimroc on February 12, 2010, 08:10:06 pm
Half way through building my jukebox but have ran into a problem. I am was planning on using a small ebay amp (see link below) going into a yamaha sub-woofer. The sub-woofer had a passthrough so it would take left and right inputs in and it has left and right outputs. It takes the bass out itself. Problem is it doesn't work anymore. I presume the sub-woofer is fine, but the amp in the sub itself must be knackered.

So I'm looking for a very cheap amp to power the sub but don't know what I'm looking for. Is there some kind of amp just to power a sub-woofer or do i need to ditch the little amp for 1 main one etc ? I presume there got to be a Car Amp that does this ?

I have the pc, 2 speakers, 1 sub-woofer and this so far (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130354591872#ht_3523wt_939 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130354591872#ht_3523wt_939)).

(I don't know the exact specs for the speakers but was told they were 100w 8ohm. The sub i don't know but it was a fairly good stand alone yamaha sub+amp so it wouldn't be too small. Its 6ohm.)

Hang on....

I'm Just checking before you buy any new kit... This is the exact same setup I have, same amplifier from eBay and hooked into a Yamaha Sub (SWT-80). In setting mine up there were a number of 'Gotchas' that can make it seem like the amp was broken, when actually it wasn't.

Firstly is the power supply DEFINITELY pushing out sufficient power? The first power supply I was using (piece of cheap crud) didn't push out a constant 2A so although the light would come on, no sound came out. Hooking it up to a better PSU fixed that.

Secondly Does your sub have 2 inputs?, if so do you have it hooked up like this?

I managed to figure it out earlier! I finally got time to check it out properly and found it was an internal fuse blown. A little glass fuse (on the main power supply board I think it is). I got this second hand so I've no idea how they managed to blow this but its up and going and what a sub! Great sound!

Thanks again for the reply. A few days away from finishing this and can't wait to hear it going! Might post a project thread up later!
