Title: *2/3 fixed* Sony KV-25KVD not accepting RGB via Scart
Post by: MB on February 06, 2010, 06:48:30 am
Hi everybody,

I've been researching and reading the BYOAC forum for months now and getting ready to choose between an LCD computer-screen and an old TV.
Last week I bought a second hand Sony KV-25KVD. I installed Soft 15Khz (built 48) and Catalyst 6.5. for my Radeon 7000 ATI PCI video card.
In  Soft 15 Khz I clicked on the 15Khz,25 and 31khz buttons. After that I used Quickres to switch the resolution to 640x480 16bit. I then picked up my computer
and took it to the Sony. I try to move the TV as little as possible because it weighs a TON! I used the VGA to SCART cable I bought from Wolfsoft.de to connect the two.
Yesterday I got a picture on the TV. It was showing two wide black borders above and below the screen. Between the upper black border and the windows desktop
there was a green, red and blue line. Today I hooked it up again but now the picture won't even stand still at all.
The only thing I can think of is that it is because the TV doesn't do 60 Hz(NTSC) and only 50 Hz(PAL) but I'm not sure.
Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and get the TV to work or do I have to go and find myself a TV that also does 60HZ (NTSC)?

It would be great if anybody could point me in the right direction!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. sorry for the long read, but I wanted to give all the information I thought may be usefull. ?

I'm getting closer,

I now got the screen to stop scrolling by de-installing soft 15 KHz and reinstalling it with just the 15 KHz option clicked and not the other two.
The letterboxed problem is also gone because I found out that the TV was set to 16:9 mode and not 4:3. Strange because it's a 4:3 screen
and I wasn't expecting settings for screenformats on it. Live and learn I guess.
All that's left now is that there's quite a bit of overscan but I found the servicemanual on the internet and will try to fix that this afternoon.
O and the white colours seem to flicker but that's not real noticable in most games. Not sure what causes that.

Hope this helps others with similar problems.

Marten.

It's certainly possible to use 50hz modes in lieu of 60hz ones to get a working picture on this display.  I encourage you to read up about setting custom modes in soft 15khz and advancemame.  Addtionally, check and see if your graphics card software allows you to set custom refresh rates.
