Doing some spring cleaning, found this in a closet. Gonna build a frame for it and put it in the Casa de Yotsuya gameroom.

Had a friend drop off two minty 19" 4:3 LCDs that "were just laying around collecting dust". One went into the Galaga, another is going into my SW Cabaret until I can get a CRT monitor in there. Free screen chuffiness!

Found an NOS playfield for my Grand Lizard after searching for 4 years...

Doing some pre-ZapCon upgrades to the Casa de Yotsuya gameroom...

So I can call you a Major Dick now? sweeet, Im chuffed about that ;)
I bought back the cab that was once ShoRyuKade ( http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120488.msg1278327.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120488.msg1278327.html) )

Its kinda beat the ---fudgesicle--- up, and all the art and everything is gone, but I didnt want the cab to go to the dump. Don't expect a project thread any time soon, I'm balls deep in Killer Instinct cab.

Those tacky swirling lights your neighbors had in their yard look awesome on your game room ceiling and are on clearance for $6 at Big Lots...

^ Good call!
-
Seriously. Those things were so annoying. Put in a bit of effort and put up some real lights.
Good repurpose for sure.
-
A promotion to Major? Congratulations definitely in order. Thank you for your service, and the personal sacrifices that go along with it.

Boom! Good idea.
I have a gaming nook and I bet this would look cool behind there.
-
I couldn't take the occasional blinding light from that thing, so I put black duck tape on the bottom half of the lens that faces outward. I also cut the end off the plastic yard spike, drilled a hole into a 2x4 scrap, and have it up on a little platform now. Major improvement.

I've got that exact one, but I can't figure out where I put it last year. It's a good idea.
-
Late Christmas present... Father buys me some extravagant tool every year.
Took it to my restaurateur great grandfather's meat cleaver. (I had previously embalmed it in black paint to prevent rust... It's been used as a workshop tool for 50+ years). This thing might be ready for butchering sheep duty again.

This sucks too. A friend of mine brought it to a party at my house. I considered revoking his friend status. I like Star Trek. This almost changed my mind.

Yeah, and it wasn't cheap, either. :timebomb:
Still think the worst was Blue Moon Oatmeal Cappuccino Stout. Turned out my friend had hauled it to two parties before he brought the rest to mine. First time I gagged on a beer since I was like 9 years old. Taking a swig of what I thought was regular Blue Moon and getting.... That. Yikes.

Bloody synthehol. Next time go behind Guinan's bar and get the green stuff. That's the good stuff.

I got the remastered version of Van Morrison's Moondance and applied for 3 new jobs this week. Hella chuffed.

21 years as an educator, over half my life in Education. I'm getting the itch to do something new. And make money.

I could retire in about 7 more years at the earliest, but I've come to realize I don't want to do this for 7 more years. I'd also have to spend $8k out of pocket to move over on the salary scale, but I'd rather put that towards my daughter's own college tuition.
-
It bothers me that educators aren't paid more. It's one of the most important jobs so teachers should really get paid accordingly. Maybe then the nation wouldn't be so darn stupid.

Thanks Howard. Truly, the rewards are intrinsic.
I thought I just spotted PBJ on TV waving a torch by the stage during Lady Gaga's halftime show...

Too poor for the Super Bowl though I spent hours contemplating it when the tickets hit $1,900 a week ago. Would have been a helluva game to see in person.
Teachers pull about $50k here for 9 months, and Texas is allegedly one of those bad states that hates everyone. Many school teachers in my family and they did fine and have had a comfortable retirement.
:dunno
-
Ok, look at it this way. A lot of schooling is involved in becoming a teacher, depending upon what level you teach for of course. Typically people with degrees bring in 60k or more easy. In most States teachers get the same amount as a blue collar worker... they do extra work without any financial incentive to do so. So what incentive do the brightest and best minds have to become a teacher?
Because of this good teachers are the exception, not the norm, especially in super poor areas.
It's not about teachers being in the poor house, it's their pay not rivaling doctors and the like, which it should because forming young minds is just as important as saving lives. I mean I do my part, any prop. that comes up for vote I always vote to give them more pay, but apparently WV is a red state now, so my vote never counts.
-
I finally managed to get a Jill Valentine figure this week :)
Been searching for ages and most of them seem to fetch crazy money (most dealers want £100+!)
But I managed to snipe this one on the bay of E for £30 :)

Grading some submitted assignments. This is why you carefully spell check and grammar check as well as give a complete read through to your work before you turn it in, kids.

:lol
Grading is a funny thing, when I was in college we got the riot act about plagiarism.. and in hind sight, they didn't have the tools back then to actually catch it. Now they do, and every semester my wife agonizes over what to do when a student inevitably gets flagged. Generally that problem sorts itself out because if a student is deliberately plagiarizing they tend to be about to flunk out anyway.

Sounds like a puzzler.

I don't take advice to get off ---my bottom--- from a guy sitting on his ass in front of a podium, where you are supposed to stand. You wouldn't see Bernie Sanders sitting in a high chair.
-
He's 87 and he stood for about half of it. He gets a pass.
-
He should get a pass for just about anything. A woman at my church is turning 98 this year. She works in our food pantry serving people who need help feeding their families. She walks to church from her house across the street. Without a cane or walker. She is amazing.

Bah! Great Uncle Ed is 92... up until his stroke last year he could run circles around me... quite literally. He's still pretty darn spry, but the stoke took some function away from his left leg.

Decided it was time to get back into spoiling perfectly good food game.
I present... Cheese.

One quart of whole milk yields a blob about the size of a deck of cards. I am hilariously lactose intolerant.
This will end well.

Found some moldy meat hanging up in a restaurant in Paris! The cheese over here is Chufftacular!

Are you sure that just isn't REAAAAALLLY moldy meat? I'm just saying, cheese is rot.

Yeah, we opened up one of the bottles of strawberry wine I aged in a Topo Chico bottle for like three years (through indifference). The smell wasn't great, kind of like wet old bread, but the taste wasn't completely awful. One of the group even liked it. I poured that stuff down the drain.
:lol
Decided to spend the $50 and be slightly more serious this round. Yeast was 50 cents, apple juice was $5 a gallon, sugar and spice about a buck. Bottles were $11 with the air lock. If I reuse any of this stuff, that's actually pretty reasonable, especially as my damned dive British pub has gone up to $5-6 a pint.

No, but I did see that cabinet today when I made the pickup. Still on my want list. The guy who owns it isn't too keen on getting rid of it yet though. I asked him at ZapCon last year and he gave me this look.

Yeah somebody has to explain the rodeo to me one day. Even if you are really good at it, you just managed to outsmart a cow... one of the stupidest mammals on the planet. Myself I don't play with my food.

Not so sure about that one. I wasn't at all familiar with her walking into it, but left impressed. (Obviously I recognized several of her songs as they were played)

Get people aware of and children excited about agricultural endeavors. Tons of scholarships handed out, etc.
My wife has received thousands of dollars from them and it has been a lifesaver. Funding genotyping this semester.
So, yeah, I get it and can laugh at some of the absurdity but hey.

I thought the same. That also goes double for the Transformers. The humans are unnecessary and annoying.

Today I went back to the rodeo and saw The Chainsmokers.
They don't sing, dance, or play instruments. They pretend to turn dials, listen to headphones, and say, "let me hear you Houston! 1 2 3 4!" The light show was cool, and I was surrounded by top shelf ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- dancing to it. Which was nice.
My wife played their EP on the drive home. It was actually pretty good. Why wasn't their no name female vocalist there?

Yep. Same here. Although it's going to be "for sale" at ZapCon, I ain't gonna try too hard to sell it.
But I gotta tell you, that sombitch is HEAVY.
I'm gonna make some fan supports tomorrow and add a fan. Someone already did the power mods, so the fans will help keep things cool. I modeled the support in Illustrator and will plasma cut it.

Fun fact about this device, you don't own Pokemon Go Plus, Pokemon Go Plus owns you. My desk is in range of a Pokestop. Bzz... Bzzz.... Bzz...
-
I'm surprised you are still playing it. Actually I don't think I ever started. Installed it on my phone but it was glitching out and never bothered to fix it.
-
It has introduced us to several area parks and increased my step average, so no hate here. The creator is a Texan and did an interview in Texas Monthly where he said the entire point of the game was to get you outside and visiting local points of interest. If that sounds appealing to you, you will enjoy it. Otherwise, nah.

Just finished my first professional arcade repair job. Local Barcade has a TMNT with a bad power switch. I came out and swapped it for them, 10 minutes later and twenty bucks richer.

Which place, Cobra? I was actually impressed by that place. It feels like a neighborhood arcade that happens to have a bar instead of the other way around.

A couple of my buddies came over last night. Their wives wanted to have a girl's night out. My friends brought their kids out and everyone had a blast in my mini arcade. All 4 dedicated cabs and my MAME cab got heavy use. The kids got a kick out of seeing their names on my hi score leaderboard.
I want to thank this community for making nights like this possible. You guys gave me the drive to build my own cab and to pick up dedicated games.

So what are your plans for those containers?
Tiny houses
-
You'll have to only kidnap tiny people I guess.
-
So what are your plans for those containers?
One is for long term storage for junk like arcade machines. The other will be turned into a workshop until I build the real shop. And they're both used as wind breaks for the camper.
-
...do you live in the camper?...
-
The plan was to live in the camper this year and build a house out there next. However... life threw me a curveball and now I'm living with a lady friend.

...is she hot?...

I wouldn't deviate from the plan if otherwise...

So, got the $15 300W sound bar thumping with my Stepmania setup. That combined with my ceiling lighting effects means I may have finally achieved my game room dreams.

My house goes on the market tomorrow night. Chuffed but also a bit freaked out. Lived here for 17 years, raised my kids here, went through quite a bit in my life in this house. Also put a ton of blood, sweat, and tears into it, not to mention a rather large pile of money. If it sells (or rather when), I will be homeless for about 7 months, and I am expecting a fast sale. Hope I can find an apartment quickly.
They say you should never change more than three big things in your life in one year. I am pushing that a little. 2017 is either going to make or break me.

House listed at 3pm, got a call for a showing at 4pm, left at 7pm and went to see Ghost in the Shell while the first prospective buyers checked out the house, ended up in the lobby for 90% of the movie negotiating on the theater system. Got a full price offer by 9pm, plus most of the theater equipment on the side.
The naff here is that I ended up selling about $12k in theater equipment for $5k. I made most of it up on getting the full price on the house, but in the heat of the moment I threw out a number I will likely regret when I start building the new theater in the new house. I am almost afraid to put a pen to paper to add up what I really have into that theater. I was planning to replace a lot of it anyway, and this saves me the trouble of shipping expensive stuff to God knows where, but I'm wishing I had held out for a few more dollars..

Yup, already planning some huge upgrades for the theater. It's hard not to buy stuff now, but it would sit in storage for like 9 months, just losing value before ever unboxing them, so I have to hold off. My fear is when I am ready for the new projector it will be 2 months before the next model year so I will either have to wait or pay full price for something that will be discounted 40% in a couple months, not to mention lacking new features.
I also sold off some shop tools. Sold my 15" 3hp planer, an old Delta scroll saw, and my 6" 2hp belt sander. Three big heavy pieces I don't have to move and store. It is fun being able to upgrade, but it isn't going to be cheap. The trick is not spending the money I got from selling the stuff so I can actually afford new stuff when the new house is ready.
Oh and that fridge that PBJ helped me get a great deal on with the movers coupon idea, that ended up thrown in on the house deal, which means I will need another expensive fridge. The upside is that little dent in the door that bugs me will now bug the new homeowner when they finally notice it, and I will have a new fridge without any dents. The dent isn't worth the $2k loss, but I have to find some kind of upside.
-
Was wondering if you got rid of that eye twitch causing fridge.
:lol
Anyway, it's that time of year and I have finally gotten my hands on kosher Coca Cola intended for Passover. Only took 20 years of passively looking.
Not sure if it's fresher or been handled better than the "Mexican" cokes, but it's definitely a notch better.

No, but I have some other things in the works. I just need to go, and to widen my search, they need to know so I can do it the right way. Going to tell the principal tomorrow.

Oh, and the principal was pretty cool. He told me if I ever wanted to go back, he'd hire me in a heartbeat. So there's that.

The country really needs a chain of repair shops... not computers, those still exist, but just general electronics repair. In our disposable society repairing old tech is a dying art.

That's what fascinates me/gives me chuff about fixing stuff.

This is why I want to get out of IT admin, computers are cool and all but I get way more excited when working on other electronics, boards, etc even If I dont fix it I still have fun learning how everything works.

So, turns out if you freeze cider, and skim off the ice, you are engaging in fractional freezing / freeze distillation. I had done it because it was drinkable, I wanted to kill off the yeast, and was too impatient to wait for it to fully thaw.
So two gallons were condensed to one. Tasted about 15-20% and five of us plowed through it last night. Was actually quite good with a squirt of stevia. Next batch will be loaded with cinnamon, sugar, and cloves.

I just got home from GOBfest (http://www.gobfest.ca/), a local board game convention. There were a few hundred people there, playing games from 9AM to midnight yesterday, and 9AM to 5PM today. I took a couple pictures, but my phone didn't save them for some reason.

Made these all the same. Gallon of apple juice, two pounds of sugar, cinnamon sticks, ground cloves. Doubling the sugar has definitely sped up fermentation. It was bubbling in 20 minutes.
Gave up on ever cooking a pork loin I liked, so after a week of salting and pouring off the liquid, this was washed off, coated in paprika and Slap Ya Mama, wrapped in cheese cloth, wrapped in parchment paper, and then given the full Silent Hill aesthetic. Cheese cloth is found in the craft section now, btw.

That really dark bottle in the middle is foaming so violently it has overflowed the air lock twice. All I can do is clean it out and shove it back in there. Giving me very high hopes about the amount of fermentation going on.

I survived my stress test today. I didn't fall off the treadmill or have to make them stop it or anything embarrassing like that. It also looks like they might be able to take me off of my blood pressure medication. I'm down to a "lean" 235. Oh and my Long John Silver's meal had a bonus cookie in it. So yeah, probably won't die and free cookie! In my sad little life I consider that a good day.

Yotsuya, Thank you for teaching. People don't understand how much work really goes into it and the fact you stuck with it for so long speaks volumes about you. I wish you all the best in what you do next. If only I was abled to stay a one school for more then a few years but thats not in the cards, at least till I stop having to move.
PPJ starting salary in the NYC DOE in north of $45,000 and tops out just over $100,000 assuming you don't work summers or after school. It's also generally pays less then most of the surrounded suburban school districts. $50,000 does seem a little low but I have no ideal cost lives like when you live.
In other news, went to the local pool with my son and pick up some chicks.

Do you have wolves/coyotes where you live? With a fence like that you are about to find out. No joke man, chicks are like candy to predators. You might want to keep them indoors until they get a bit bigger at least. Chickens are disgustingly dirty animals, but they do make surprisingly good pets. Depending upon how well behaved they are either you'll never eat chicken again, or eat it every day and make them watch.

Congratulations on the new job.
In my experiences private school jobs are easier. I think it's mostly because the parents income level is the single best indicator of how well kids doing school. Most of the ones I worked at typically only take students with minimum challenges. There are how will show kids the door. That said I loved all the teaching job I have ever had private or public, but I really want to get back to public school.

That about what my last two school charged for middle school. It's crazy what international schools can get away with. When your kid is done with college you should look into teaching over seas.
I know your Windows guy but take my word for it, if your going to make a media lab use iMac's.

I actually have a second job offer to be a trainer for the HR department for a large enterprise, but the money is not there, ironically.
There's a third option that I'm a finalist for, but again, the money is not going to be there.
Finally, there's something in Private Industry that hasn't come to fruition yet but might come down the road, and I might have to reevaluate things. It's an exciting time though. I haven't had a pay raise in over 6 years, and I'm getting pretty huge bump.

I always wanted a tat but could never stay settled on a design I liked for a number of years.
Then my sister designed me a Tribal type tat incorporating a MK logo which I had inked some years ago.

Jill herself is finished but shes meant to have a sort of back drop but again due to my changing feelings its not been done yet lol
One day it will ;)

You know, occasionally you encounter a new slang phrase and you know exactly what it means without any context. Two examples immediately spring to mind - fruit boots and tramp stamps.
One time I walked into a tattoo parlor with my wife and a friend, ---fudgesicle--- it, we're gonna get a tattoo! and we were greeted by someone with full sleeves and a multitude of facial piercings. And all of the sudden that butterfly on the hip bone seemed like a very slippery slope.

Hi guys, glad to see some familiar faces from when I was last on here.
Figured I'd share some ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- as well. Moved from Northern California to the Southern Part of France called Nice, had to leave a lot behind in my workshop as space is a commodity here. Found an old hole in the wall store turned garage near my house to turn into a workshop. Has been about 5 months since I got to cut some wood and well, idle hands and all.
I plan on setting up a CNC and a bunch of woodworking tools to make some Arcade machines again, maybe sell some to the Frenchies here. Hipster crap has gone big recently in the cities. Mainly just to keep myself busy building a Man cave though.

I have electrical guys coming out to do the wiring next week. Probably going to charge me a butt load, but they said no problem as that spot had electricity that was removed within the decade.
I have some smaller stuff going to be ran through adapters that I brought with me for some of the cordless stuff, but am buying all new tools as I sold all the larger ones before leaving the states.
I think that was the hardest part of the move, ---fudgesicle--- the neighbors, I wanted to bring my table saw and drill press.

Just spent a few HR looking at RGB converting some CRT's to start last night.

For now I'll just be making Bartops and some maybe unique shaped arcades, I never got into restoration or using original hardware. Started off jamming laptops into jigsaw cut bartops http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120067.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120067.0.html) and will probably use raspi or the pandora game boards.

Build as you like but SCART opens up some opertunitea worth considering.
SCART makes lots of Eurapion CRT tv's RGB ready, just like arcad monitors. With very little work your should be able to use a pandora box Vea SCART as they have an RGB out. Lots of guys on BYOAC use VGA to SCART cable in there builds with mame. You may be able to do the Rpi as well Vea one of the hats that have RGB out. You wouldn't be the first to use a small CRT in a bar top and it should beclose to an acteral arcade monitor.
-
Interesting.
-
The refresh rate is going to be crap on scart though. No such thing as a perfect format before svga came along.

It doesn't seem to have a negative effect on the frame rate. In fact it should be as fast as the TV can sports.
Driving a TV directly has some advantages. The quality is superior to composite or S-video, and as the video card's TV encoder is completely bypassed, custom resolutions and refresh rates can be programmed. On the down side, this method can require some experimentation to get right.
(14.76 MHz for PAL, 13.34 MHz for NTSC.)
https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/RGB_Scart (https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/RGB_Scart)
-
PAL is 25fps and NTSC is 30fps. Most game consoles originate from japan, a ntsc region. That means that games are often shoddily ported to pal and since it has a lower fps, either the game will run slower or 5 fps are cut internally, often resulting in a more jerky picture. In an arcade situation it matters less, but it still probably matters with some games.

My Dad is big into the local Elks and he is always trying to get younger members. I been telling him to fill the bar with old pinball tables and a select few arcade games. I also told him to fill the old large, now empty pool room with new tables, ski ball, air hockey, a projector with an Xbox one/ PS4. If they want younger members, then they need to do and have things young people would want to do. I think the average age is over 70.

Is that like Carbon Credits?
-
Nope. Reducing your carbon emissions is scientifically proven to save lives..... carbon is a greenhouse gas, it's bad...for everyone and everything, you learn that in 4th grade. Heaven is a fictitious place created by people that are terrified of death.
-
Hmm, ok. Good talk, guys.
Anyway, was pretty damn easy to get the Firepower out and set up. Plugged it in and it booted right up.

So... buying Carbon Credits from Al Gore reduces greenhouse gasses how exactly? I must have missed this class in the 4th grade.
Damn, why don't we just start a Go Fund Me page to buy millions of Carbon Credits and the global warming crisis will be solved! There is no possible way that Carbon Credits are a scam, because we all know that Gore is a genius. I mean, first he invents the internet, then he comes up with a way to buy ourselves out of our waste creating too much cloud cover.
So if you keep following that logic, using credits from online surveys to buy your way into Heaven seems perfectly legit. And I bet Gore is behind that one too...

This conversation will be productive.

This reminds me of that king of the hill episode where dale was selling carbon offsets.

Blah blah, fairytale talk, earth is burning, and dumpster diving since 15 is not really a job. The conversation has gone lamer than a trash novel with a bad photoshop cover art directed by internet peons. :o
-
I figured even liberals laughed at Carbon Credits, but I guess not. Sorry.
I made a note:
Paying Al Gore for a Credit to Allow me to Burn More Natural Resources without Hurting the Environment
is NOT EQUAL to
Filling out Internet Surveys for Credit to Allow me to Get into Heaven.
Got it. Clearly one is completely legitimate and the other is just a joke. My bad.
-
Albeit it far from perfect, the idea incentivizes reducing carbon emissions.
:dunno
Anyway, I'm thoroughly confused at the direction this thread has taken.
-
Albeit it far from perfect, the idea incentivizes reducing carbon emissions.
Well then sign me up so I can up my electrical service to 400 amp for that 23,000 watt home theater I'm installing, and while you're at it, give me a few more credits so I can get a bigger truck with big ass tires. I want the one that runs on owls.
Those credits will help me sleep better at night knowing I am saving the environment.
Now, where are those internet surveys? I haven't been to church in a while, so I need to beef up my chances. These days, the way my heart starts jumping around in my chest, I might need it at any time...
-
::)
-
Hmm.. this is an interesting thread. To me it looks like dkersten made a joke about carbon credits and typical Howard came in and got all preachy...
-
No atheists don't get all preachy, that's the whole point. :)
Carbon credits aren't a joke, the entire earth's population is on the verge of death due to unpredictable weather spurned by just a very slight increase in the average global temperature and half of the US thinks that a magical man in the sky that grants wishes is real while "scientists" and their "facts" are a made up conspiracy by the democrats.
Since corporations only care about money, carbon credits are a perfect deterrent as it hurts polluting businesses the only place it counts for them. Yes trading credits is somewhat questionable, but then again some polluters sell them to people that intentionally aren't going to use them, thus keeping another ton of carbon out of the atmosphere. So anyone who buys these credits to not use them, even if it's just to make themselves feel high and mighty, are genuine super heroes in my book and they should be to every single solitary person on planet earth. I mean, you all like breathing right?
Also if you all dislike my "preaching" so much then just leave. Been here since the beginning, I'm not going anywhere, you can't wait me out, so quit complaining or just go.

I'm throwing in with Howard on this one. I'm at a total loss on the antipathy toward the carbon credit concept. It makes sense to me, it gives a financial incentive to lower emissions, how is that a bad thing?

Oh please bro... We're ants on a donut. One ant doesn't just say to the other ant, hmmmm I think we better conserve our resources. They devour it and move on.
We cannot save ourselves, we are doomed. Perhaps we can seed another world or develop AI to protect our DNA for a universal flight, but we'd rather concern ourselves with hashtags and party politics. So get to building that Arcade cabinet you've been putting off.

The naff is that while the raise covered my old bonuses that I will no longer get, it didn't cover the company car I no longer get. And my old Title was IT Director, so it is technically a demotion, lol. But I have a job still, make good money still, and there is room to go up still.

I decided to go ahead and build a decent workshop in my basement instead of waiting until "someday" when I could afford a separate building.
Picked up a harbor freight dust collector and accessory kit today using 25% off coupons. (Friend went through separately with the kit). I was chuffed it was still in stock mid day.
The employees there were having a rough day. 4 registers open and long lines at all of them. A steady stream of pissed off people expecting to get 25% off big air compressors only to be told they were specifically excluded.
In response to someone complaining about the stuff being made in China, I heard an employee loudly say "oh, you're looking for American Freight. That's across street. LOL
-
That is a harsh burn because you'd immediately feel stupid after realizing that the fact it's imported goods is right in the name of the store. I'd have to give a man a high 5 on that one.
-

It's amazing what one learns when one actually reads the coupon. Those 25% coupons specifically have compressors in the exclusion lists. Right next to sale/clearance items. Which is a shame, cause I really NEED a 30 gal compressor. :(
-
They opened up a shockingly nice Harbor Freight about 2 miles from my house. Clean, well lit, spacious, and has friendly employees.
I'm already on their mailing list, so between that and the fliers stuffed in my mail slot, I'm getting 2-3 20% off coupons per week. So I still get to be the coupon fairy when I go, but I've already got pretty much every tool I could conceivably need these days...

Worked on world of Nintendo repro today. Barely got anything done, but the bottom is screwed together and upright, so that's something. Had to use stupid mdf, so tomorrow I have to spackle. I'm not real chuffed about that, but I do like to say spackle. Can't wait to get enough done to haul it inside. Due to the size of the glass I had to work with, the thing is 4' 1/5" wide by 2' deep. Worked on the WON repro again today. Now it's a box... with spackle!!! I actually tried to take pics but the thing was... it's too big. My workshop is a 12x12 building and as you'd expect three of those walls are lined with tables and tools and such. Well it's 4 feet long so it takes up most of the floor and I can't back up enough to get the whole thing in the shot. I might have some crappy partials in my phone... I'll check later tonight.

Still have no idea what a World of Nintendo is.
Anyway, I've apparently become the cider whisperer and was conscripted into teaching people yesterday. A home brew shop was found in Houston, where a bunch of buzzed middle aged white dudes shoved cigars, hot dogs, and free beer at us. And they were cheaper than Amazon.
My friends also announced I'm not allowed to have a "thing" because my "thing" changes every six months. Besides pinball.
So here's 4 more gallons churning...

We don't do hotels anymore, like Chaddles said, it's a vacation rental. We've found it's much more enjoyable and relaxing away from 300 families here to go to Sea World.
-
You know, my white knight justice high horse crusades are limited, but I do draw the line at Sea World. I was already kind of iffy on them, and the last time I went I go to the Shamu show and it's all this crap about "fierce predators with a natural range of thousands of miles" and you're looking at the poor bastard swimming circles in an outdated swimming pool. That was it, never again. That Black Fish documentary was mildly upsetting, but it mostly convinced me that people that aspire to train whales are odd, odd individuals.
-
As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate just going on a vacation to do nothing. When I was younger it was all about making sure the family got to all the theme parks and saw all the attractions, which in the end just leaves you tired from your vacation. I just woke up today at 11 o'clock and we're gonna walk over to the beach and hang out till about six, and then going to host some friends who are also here in town for a barbecue. That's what my vacations have become, and to be honest I'm pretty happy about them now.

Yeah if you ever want to be really depressed on vacation, Sea World is the place to go. I feel for the big critters and really don't even get the need for them to be there.... the aquariums they have are far more interesting and the fish have room to breathe there.... except for the poor whale sharks.

True, true. When the 10 year old Scion blew a serpentine belt at highway speed, it was time to say adios. Had that towed to Toyota on Saturday morning. Halfway contemplating abandoning it there.... But I'll spend $500 on a repair and then drive it across the street to the suckers at CarMax. Maybe I'll clear $20.
And the dogs carefully guard the bbq pit....

I'm guessing they would just sit it out back and charge you storage until you came for it later anyway.
-
They'll hit you with fees and then sell it with a mechanic's lien on it. Happens 24/7 in Texas.
-
Ah, up here stuff that gets abandoned is usually rusted out and has problems that don't happen in Texas. Often not worth repairing at all. Salt does totally different things up here that make abandoned cars worth little more than salvage.
-
...that make abandoned cars worth little more than salvage.
If that.
-
Now that I think about it most cars I have been around that were junked actually ran. They were falling apart physically. I remember a station wagon we had when I was a kid that ran fairly reliably but the floorboards were gone and the rear end was actually sort of falling apart piece by piece. :laugh2: We had to keep our feet on the bucket seat in the back because the only thing protecting your feet from the road was some carpet.

Was kinda funny to be the oldest one in the room by 15 years, but the band was very nice and talked to my wife and I for awhile. I admitted to the leader I had stolen his album from youtube but wanted to make it right, so they autographed my legit copy and said we were square. :lol

Apparently I'm not into hardcore emo/punk (metalcore?).
It seems to combine the monotone indecipherable vocals of metal that's too hard for me with the whiny vocals of little DC shoe wearing bitches.
-
It does have a bit too much gorilla voice for me. But I'm more of an easycore fan. But I do like A Day to Remember and some other heavier stuff.
-
Group discusses "music"... but only talks about vocals...
Open your ears!
-
If the lead singer sounds like garbage then it ruins the song. You hear vocals more prominently than the music most of the time so it's perfectly valid to like/hate a style of music based upon the vocals alone.
One of the main reasons I could never get into punkish music is because the singers can rarely sing. They yell either in a loud monotone way or completely off key. It isn't the yelling... I love heavy metal... but they yell musically... there is talent involved there.
-
Yeah, the vocals can be a little off putting but I was drawn to the rapid genre shifts in the sound and the overall 'concept album' thing. The lyrics are considerably better than you'd originally suspect. If it's not for you, cool.
-

After a whole lot of wrestling with it my Tempest is finally back to 100% working. Had a vector rom chip die, then a pokey, then the optics. Got all of that straightened out, upgraded the spinner bushings so now it spins smoother than a skateboard wheel.
Even had to drill out a broken set screw inside the spinner that was probably sent out that way from the factory. Pain in the ass but Tempest is back to better than 100%.
-
Probably been 15 years since I've seen a dedicated Tempest. Circa 2001, I spent an hour on the phone with a space cadet that claimed she had one that she had owned since 1983 in her home, purchased from a Tilt, but it was under too many piles of fabric to get to, and she had far too many cats in the house that would get upset if I was there. She was gonna do "some market research" to see what it was worth. I was naive enough at the time to assume I was dealing with a sane, rational person but I did wonder why someone that wasn't actually interested in selling had asked me to call her. (I had posted a WTB ad on usenet)
:dunno
Anyway, good job, Chad.

See that almost sounds like a challenge. The sadist in me wants to be #3. ;)
For the record, Rob Zombie is awesome. That one song he re-recorded 100 times and tried to pass off as other songs is awesome too.
-
Sure, I liked him in the 90s. Then we figured out he couldn't do anything different, didn't make great movies, and forgets his own lyrics on stage.

As a Ministry fan (all eras) - lol wat? Go on.
Chuff related - I made pickled watermelon rind.... And it's actually good. Goes really well with my salted pork. Partying like it's 1599 around here.

Rob Zombie did add that awesome sequence to the Beavis and Butthead movie.
-
He's a brilliant artist and marketer.
But his music is derivative at best.
-
So Rob Zombie = Kiss?
-
He's apparently made a career out of ripping off Ministry, though it's unexplained.
:dunno
(I'm not carrying water for Rob Zombie, it's just an odd accusation....)
-
So Rob Zombie = Kiss?
Well Kiss, like Rob Zombie, is also awesome. They have more than one song though and most are rock staples, so you can't really compare them. The only comparison I can make between the two is that they are decidedly stuck in the time periods in which they peaked. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though.... I don't want Stan Bush doing albums that aren't Transformers related after all.
-
Come on Jim do I really have to play Jesus built my hotrod for you to acknowledge the fact that White Zombie borrowed heavily from what Ministry was already doing?

3 days of wedding survived. :P
Anyway, if you add a little apple juice, and put a sealed cap back on the bottle, wait a few days, you get carbonation. I took 20 photos of this and none of them really captured all the little bubbles, but here it is fizzing away...
The extra fermentation made the cider much dryer and the bubbles substantially improved the mouth feel. I'm not quite at Crispin or Austin East Cider levels, but I'd put this right alongside Strongbow and Hornsby's and above Angry Orchard. I'm not sure if I need to re-evaluated my opinion of commercial cider or take pride in what I've accomplished with limited skill and materials.
Now this means I'm going to have to invest in some heavier duty bottles that can withstand pressure long term. Unscrewing the jugs is kind of a startling experience right now...
-
There is a cider brewery right by my house that makes stuff that tastes exactly like regular unfiltered apple cider. You'd never know it was alcoholic. Lots of people here, including my wife, drink almost exclusively their stuff.
http://www.homesteadcider.com/ (http://www.homesteadcider.com/)
-
I'm going to have to figure out how to calculate the ABV of my stuff. I use yeast that can get up to 18% but I think I'm about half that. Knocking back two pints gets me a decent buzz, moreso than a typical draft beer, but less than an equal volume of wine would, so I'm figuring about 10%. Very little hangover, which is nice.
-
Pretty simple process. Buy a hydrometer, get readings both before and after fermentation, and then run it through a standard forumla to calculate ABV. Formula varies a bit by what you're fermenting or how accurate you need it.
-

The Banning Repair Trip.
Many of you who have come to ZapCon have had the opportunity to meet Alpha-Tron, a California collector who is genuinely one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He is always great to us Phoenix locals, and likes to talk about how close we are. A few months ago on KLOV, he was talking about how he was assisting the owner of Arcade Expo in Banning, California with the upkeep of his machines. They have two shows a year in Banning, one in March and one in October, and in the course of getting ready for the October show they brought in a bunch of machines that were considered projects. Joe was talking about how great our Phoenix repair parties were and how he'd love to do something like that in Banning, and a bunch of us locals jumped at the chance to help them out. So he got permission from the owner to have an event there at the show place, and it was a go.
Once we decided on a date, things went in the motion pretty quickly. We picked June 22, and in the end seven of us committed to going. We caravanned over in two pick ups, and I rode over with Arcadenut, Aceldamor, and Jawhn. We got to Banning about 5 PM on Friday, which was about a 4 Hour drive from Phoenix.
The Arcade Expo facility is huge. It's literally a warehouse complex that this guy owns. And in this complex, he has over 700 pinball machines and over 400 arcade machines, plus a fair amount of old EM machines. It was awesome just walking in, especially if you had never seen this collection before. Also, since there was no one else there, we pretty much had the run of the place, so we could get in and look at everything that was there.
But there was also a slight problem. Temperatures outside were around 105°, but the AC unit inside the warehouse complex wasn't working. We had someone drive up from San Diego who is also an AC repair technician, and he said that the AC unit hadn't probably been working for years. So with all the games on, the temperature in the place quickly rose. However, we did have access to a portable swamp cooler and a giant industrial fan, so we made the most of it.
So for the next 24 hours, we went and checked every single arcade cab, testing them for any issues. We looked at everything, like controls, monitors, buttons, lights, etc. We annotated our findings on the sheets of paper you see on the machines (Joe is going to compile the data electronically later). Some guys worked on cap kits for monitors, others set games to free play or wired in coin up buttons. One of our crew, Kent, brought two charcoal grills and we cooked out for dinner. The cool desert wind picked up at night and we ate and drank outside. We worked up until 2:30 AM, then set up camp and slept in the arcade with doors open to let in the night air.
The next morning we finished inventory and then fixed what we could. Unfortunately, the place was lacking in parts. I scavenged some replacement parts from the back of the place to fix a sit down Night Driver cab. This one meant a lot to me because it was the first arcade cab I remember seeing.
We all decided to return to Phoenix on Saturday since we were pretty much fatigued from the heat and at a standstill without parts. We're planning a return trip before October now that we know what needs to be done.
It was awesome seeing so many original machines, some rare, and some I hadn't played in 30 years. It really affirms what I love about the designs of classic cabinets and why I have no problem being called a purist. It was a great time. I had fun talking shop and hanging out with my Phx collector brothers and the CA locals who showed up (we DID outnumber them!). If you get a chance to go to Arcade Expo, do it!

Yeah, the owner has some cash. In fact, the arcade complex had one building for pins, a second for vids (connected by a short hallway), a small cafeteria, a building dedicated to EM shooters, a big storage building for parts (mostly pin), yet ANOTHER storage area for projects, and plenty of parking and picnic space. It's at the base of a mountain, and at night was really cool.
As a bonus, Alpha-Tron gave me this...

The factory complex is right next to the Banning airport and old enough that you can tell it's not in a floodplain. I think his collection will be fine.
-
I would be more concerned about the AC not working. Extreme heat and cold aren't good for arcade machines, especially pins and the older EM stuff.
-
109 can't be typical weather there.
People keep games here in non climate controlled storage all the time and the extreme cold doesn't affect them much. They have a much larger tolerable range than people do.
-
60-100 degrees is neither extreme heat nor extreme cold. Temperature isn't going to change quickly inside an open space like that, either. They're fine.

Yeah, that's what the other guy thought, too. :lol

And that's what PAPA in Pittsburgh thought before they lost 200+ games in a building that hadn't seen water since the 1950s.

It is an interesting setup at these "arcades". They are always Half video games/half video game gambling machines. So you have middle aged men playing games like plachinko smoking inside feet from little kids and teenagers gaming for hours on the real arcade machines.
I have also noticed most of their games besides some I shot are more like dance dance revolution but for your hands, just smashing buttons in unison.

British Arcades always used to be like this, half games half gamblers.
But sadly now most are more like 95% gambling and 5% games.
Not just arcades but other places to.
Like the local bowling alley used to have loads of games.
But now there is 2. plus pool tables, gamblers etc.
-
Canada converted to 95% gambling 5% games in the 80s. Back then it was video slots. Then in the early 90s they moved to real slots.

Come on guys, this is the Chuff thread keep it on topic, unless you're going to talk more about panties.

So, my replacement Dual Shock 4 sticks arrived from Reddest China yesterday.
What should have been a simple job turned into a 75 minute odyssey of crawling on my living room floor, looking for a tiny spring, only to give up, sit down, and have it fall out of the controller housing. This was after Round 1 where I had replaced the sticks and put it back together, only to find out the touchpad stopped working. Turns out the touchpad can be opened up, and there's a ribbon cable inside it prone to getting unplugged. Once the dangler was put back in his socket, everything was good to go.
Anyway, that's old and busted at the bottom, new hotness at the top. $2 shipped for 10. Replacements felt slightly lighter but fit perfectly. Ultimately it turns out that Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain is ridiculously sensitive to wear in the joysticks, and Metal Gear is impossible if Snake won't stop walking slowly, so that controller has been retired from Snake duty. Works fine with everything else.

That is absolutely the worst thing about having black light gameroom carpeting. Drop a small bolt or something on the floor, and let's face it that happens 100% of the time, it is GONE. The only way to find it is to walk around barefoot until you step on it. You can't even use the horizontal flashlight method because there is no shadow on a black carpet.
Chuff: Braze's Asteroids Deluxe multigame kit came in yesterday. Adds switching between Asteroide Deluxe, Asteroids, and Lunar Lander in an AD cabinet. I might install that over the long weekend.

I had a megatouch full of roach crap that stunk something fierce. Went to the googles and came across someone at a used car dealership saying they used fabuloso on the stankest vehicles. They relayed a story about a deer carcass in a bronco.
I don't think it removed any of the smell from the megatouch cab, but it does have an overpowering scent of it's own. I ended up keeping a box of baking soda inside the megatouch.

Only thing that somewhat worked on super stinky cabinets for me was this stuff...
And I've tried everything. Orange peels, baking soda, coffee grounds, lysol.
One machine I owned had smoke stains so bad it went through the paint and into the wood. I couldn't even belt sand it out.
-
Yeah, when it's that bad, all you can do is seal it with paint and hope that works.
-
Well I know that barbasol shaving crème will take the stank off of stuff believe it or not. There's also this stuff called zero odor, which absolutely works, but it's like 20 dollars a bottle and you have to keep using it periodically.
-
Bit belated this but I forgot to post at the time :p

New Stranger Things trailer blows the Ready Player One trailer away. RPO trailer looks like that Michael Bay transformer ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- where every frame has to be super ---smurfing--- busy.
-
BTW, one of the things I've always liked about Stranger Things is that they really get the look of the Eighties right
-
I liked the RPO trailer. Anything with the Iron Giant is ok in my book. That being said it's obvious that it's being done by a bunch of old farts that don't understand gaming culture. I mean the term "Player One" doesn't even have any relevance in a mmorpg.
Stranger things is cool because it's a show that adults can enjoy, but the stories focus around the adventures of a group of kids.... a concept that kind of died in the 80's after films like the Goonies perfected it. I'm excited about the new season.
The Defenders looks pretty good as well. I suffered through that boring season of Luke Cage just to be caught up for the team-up so this better be good.

Figured out a Gyruss board issue for brother opt2not with Arcadenut's help. Chuffy day.

Chuff things for me.
Shedding 15 pounds after sticking to some good nutrition and exercise. Getting stronger with the bodyweight training I'm doing. The chin up bar is my nemesis. Most men can't do 5 full pull ups. When I started I could barely do one, now I can just crank out five. When I can do ten I'll reset my goals. Most women can't even do a single pull-up but that's just a physiological difference particularly in the shoulders and back muscles. Women tend to be naturally better at sit-ups by comparison. Years ago a certain (fit) lady challenged a group of us cocky guys, as to how many pull-ups she could do. We said “five” and she proceeded to power through ten of them to our goggle eyed amazement.
Getting through another Winter. I goddam hate the cold. Most winters I do nothing, just put on weight and get lazy. Not this Winter.
Getting back into hobby stuff, arcade related included, after a series of unfortunate events. I was pretty much ready to forget about the arcade hobby for good. No interest or passion in it any more, unable to finish projects etc. etc. Turns out those unfortunate events were kind of liberating. A hobby should NEVER be like working even if you love your job. I’m happy to be tinkering in the garage again but with a different point of view.

That's awesome, man. Good for you. I'm going through a premature mid-life crisis and have gone under the tutelage of a body building physician for the last few months. Sad to say I'm currently stronger than I've ever been. He tells me I've progressed from "weak, ugly ---smurfette---" to "ugly ---smurfette---" in between screaming at me in Spanish.

:lol Well, I can tell you from experience that nothing kicks the old mid-life crisis in the balls harder than getting fitter, more flexible and stronger. Good on ya Jim. I started getting pissed off that I'd ache all over after just doing simple stuff like gardening or working on the car not to mention I couldn't fit into my favourite Levi 501's without popping the top button. I don't ache at all any more the day after hard physical work. The only downside is a cupboard full of clown pants. Good news for you dudes in your 30s and 40s!

kg
-
Hey, if I'm going to speak to the man, I don't want him to have to do the conversions.
-
I thought they measured weight in stones...
-
Americans using kg is just weird. Like when my friends cater to me by saying temperatures in Celsius, it's like "yeah I know your silly fahrenheits, its not that hard".
-
My part of Houston has the speed limit signs in both MPH and KM. It's extraordinarily weird but I guess it's good for all the international folk.
-
As I've expressed before, the metric system is every bit as stupid and arbitrary as imperial, perhaps more so as imperial's units of measure are actually based around real sizes/weights/ect, while metric just pulls units out of it's butt yet it's supposed to be better because it's base 10.
Celsius vs Fahrenheit might be the exception though as Celsius temps are based around the boiling and freezing points of water while Fahrenheit is based upon some guy sticking a thermometer outside and saying "yeah we'll call that a 62". That doesn't mean I'll switch, but it does make more sense.
-
Lets not get all bent out of shape over measurements systems. I did a whole cab design in imperial for the benefit of others. For me that was awkward and unatural and I ended up with silly dimensions like 5/32". I appreciate the effort in converting, just the same.
Down to 76kg here! 12.7 kilos lighter than the start of the year.
Damn! You are 3 kilos lighter than me.

Didn't he put a thermometer in a solution of salt water or something like that? ;P

Fahrenheit scale started with body temp, which was supposed to be 100 degrees, but they screwed up the measurement, which is why body temp is 98.6, not 100. A "foot" was based on the kings foot when it was established. Although the scales were established based on things that made sense at the time, they are just way too arbitrary in today's standard.

There's like 10 different explanations for those measurements, bro. Take your factoids somewhere else.

Wow, as an author I thought you'd do some kind of fact checking before posting some ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- like that.
Fahrenheit invented the mercury thermometer which was more accurate than Roemer's alcohol based thermometer. Fahrenheit thought the human body was 96* not 100*. To allow for a greater degree of precision of the mercury thermometer, the Roemer's scale was multiplied by 4.
Fun fact Celsius and Fahrenheit converge at -40 degrees.
-
Also the human body isn't one temperature anyway. 98.6 is the average.... it varies from person to person. I run a little cold as does my mother.
In regards to the foot. You all are aware that the distance has changed a lot over the years even though it's still called the same thing. The yards we use today are based on sewing, which in turn was based upon ship measurements (the sails, the rigging, ect.).... feet are based upon carpentry, ect. They were adjusted into units that worked well with the professions that had to measure with that scale the most. It's starting to become less relevant in regards to carpentry now that soulless corporations manufacture lumber and 3/4 plywood isn't quite 3/4" 2x4"s are 1.5x3 ect.....

Wow, as an author I thought you'd do some kind of fact checking before posting some ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- like that.
I just went with what my high school chemistry teacher taught me back in 1987, and back then things were usually prefaced with "the story goes that..." Doesn't matter if it is right or not, it made the point to high school students that the scale wasn't arbitrary, no matter how little relevance the basis has today, which is why I shared it when Howard suggested the scale was completely arbitrary and made no sense. I suppose it would have helped if I had prefaced my post with "the way I heard it in high school was..."
And no, as an author I do almost no research or "fact checking". Sure, it is all pure ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---, I am a fiction writer. On a note I found interesting, a friend who had just graduated with a masters in bio-chemistry read my first book about a year ago and told me that I must have done a ton of research to write it. My "fact checking" was recalling fragments of sci-fi stories I read 30+ years ago that sounded good and writing those into the story. Perhaps the same chemistry teacher who told the story about Fahrenheit mistakenly marking human body temp at 100 degrees is teaching college bio-chemistry now...

Good on you guys for the weight control effort. I'm nearly at my target weight now of 74kg (163 pounds). I'm just on 76kg so a couple of Kg to go. It's just that last belly fat which I think is the hardest place for blokes to shed it from. I'm doing body weight training to build some muscle and gain lean body mass back up to around 78kg (172 pounds) or so. Chuff reward moment for me was recently trying on a new pair of size down jeans .... and them fitting!

Thanks Howard, yeah I have a light frame and I'm on the tall side (6' 1") so that weight is about right for me. Probably too light for a medium or heavy framed fellow of that height though. Hearing other peoples efforts to shed some weight is motivating especially when you hear its' resulted in major health improvements. For my part I've had a major life change, going from a very sedentary white collar job to a really physical blue collar job. Losing weight, getting strong are largely tied up with that. Skinny is not that healthy either, slim and muscular is my goal I guess. I'd be happy to share what works for me but I'm not interested in getting all preachy about diets and such. Everyone is different and has different reasons or ideas. One thing I have learned is how to cook up some tasty meals!

I weigh 93 kilos right now, i should go back to 68 or 70 :laugh2:
No serious i should do that.

I lost weight and gained it back, lost it again, and gradually gained it back, lost it again etc. It's odd that I can go on Atkins for a month and lose it and it takes a good 4 months to pile it back on again. Now I am weight training in the gym, I am not sure if I can do the Atkins and keep my strength up, but I dropped 30 lbs and currently I am at 280, with no gain for 4 weeks and I have been going to McDonald's and Taco Bell (great way to lose weight) and have not lost or gained. It is odd that my body is acting this way. Recently had a full medical and got the all clear. Maybe my body has gotten used to my routine. I could just go all Atkins and try for that 60 lbs drop in a month, but I hate getting the body shakes and the extreme pain for the first two weeks.
-
18 years ago, I went from a shop job to a desk job, and after a year my metabolism started slowing way down. A year later I was up to 275lbs. I did what is today called the "strict Keto diet" for about 9 months, and got down to 195. After stopping, I went back to what I consider my "normal" weight of 230lbs over about 2 years. I am 5'10" and I can honestly say nobody ever believes me when I say I am 230 lbs. I dropped to 190 in the year after my divorce and people thought I had cancer or something. Anyway, since the beginning of the year, with all the changes in my life (sold family business, new position with the new company, sold my house, building a new one, youngest daughter graduated HS, grandkid on the way from oldest son, etc.), I gained 10 lbs and my health declined significantly. I finally decided to take action a few weeks ago, and declared it is time to go low carb again.
I weighed in at 239lbs on Sept 13. This morning I was 224. I was traveling for the last week, which makes it hard to stick to the diet, so I only lost 1 lb that week, but otherwise it has been steady loss. On top of this, each morning I force myself to do some basic exercises. Nothing crazy, but enough to get muscles stretched out and joints moving better. I am quite certain that the little bit of arthritis that has plagued my back is spreading to more joints, and lately I have had a tendency toward some wickedly painful tendinitis (wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee, and feet). The basic calisthenic workout has improved all that noticeably, and I feel myself getting stronger each day. Not carrying the extra 15 lbs has helped too. Each day I can do more, and actually want to do more. I have some big projects coming up once my house is done, and need to be able to do carpentry work. In a week I will be wiring my new house for all the low voltage stuff, that will be my first challenge, up and down a lot of ladders.
Aside from just feeling better, I want to get down about another 10 lbs, maybe 15. I know it will spring back once I start eating "normal" again, so I just want to use this to get a little healthier and see how long I can maintain.
Congrats to the others here losing weight. When you sit all day in front of a computer and don't have a super active lifestyle out of the office, it can be incredibly difficult to do, so my hat is off to you.

Like Howard said, a separate 'weight loss' thread is an idea. I might start one when I get to target weight. There's a big difference between making some effort to control your weight and making none at all, so good on all you guys that are doing something about it. The only real way to a permanent healthy weight is by changing habits of a lifetime, learning to eat nutritious foods that you actually enjoy with generally smaller portions. I like the regular pics of great meals some dudes here enjoy at iconic restaurants. It's coming on Spring here in Melbourne so I'm looking forward to a lot more BBQ and eating meals out on our back deck.

Ha, we did actually sit outside drinking rum until 3am one night to keep looters spooked. Then it was up at 7 to start clearing brush!
My parents lost their air conditioner, travel trailer, full tool shed, and fence. Some damage to boat lift, but boat has since been moved to another and engine was fine. Their house is okay. Cars fine. Many houses surrounding them completely destroyed. Some are just a pile of rubble.
Yesterday we drove a car convoy to Austin because my mom was stuck up there without a vehicle. Spent 100 miles of that drive trying to find a gas station with gas.... Had 3/4 of a gallon in the tank when I finally found gas, and we got the last 15 gallons they had.
Plenty of gas in Rockport, oddly.
I had put in a month ago to take today off. Spent 90% of it sleeping. Pics tomorrow when I'm on the clock.

Moved the biggest part of my world of Nintendo reproduction in the house. Got the drawers calibrated for the most part. I also moved all my consoles, games and accessories out of my room in preparation of the move. I didn't get a hernia lifting that frikkin 200lb W.O.N. cab and didn't die of a heart attack moving all my stuff so these days I consider that a win. I'm mostly chuffed that this all-consuming monster of a project is almost done.
-
Spent the last 3 days pulling wire in my new house. Only about a mile of wire so far, just for the main floor and upstairs. So far I've wired 8 IP Cameras, 7 TV's (coax, cat6A, cat5e each), 10 network jacks, 3 WiFi AP's, an 8 bay attic antenna for OTA (2 coax and a cat5e), and 9 pairs of speakers. I still need to get all the wires in the equipment room cleaned up and organized, but my part of building the house is pretty much done. Next week, insulation goes in, and then drywall.
Picture doesn't really look like much but this is sort of the culmination of about 6 months of planning, so I am pretty chuffed about it.

no ceiling loops?
Nah, it all comes from all different directions on the upper 2 floors, so no large bundles until it comes together in the equipment room. Both floors are trussed, so easy to run wires through without any kind of hangers anyway.
Finished up today, total count came to 10 14/4 drops for speakers, 9 RG6 drops (2 for attic antenna, rest for TV's), 12 cat6A drops, and 42 cat5e drops. Each TV has an RG6, a cat5e, and a cat6A. Each network drop (2 per bedroom on top of the TV drops) has a cat5e and a cat6A. 8 of the cat5e's are for cameras on the exterior, 3 are for Ubiquity WiFi AP's, one for the doorbell (in case I decide to go that direction), one behind fridge (never know when you need more bandwidth to the fridge), one in kitchen island, one on kitchen counter, one to each security keypad, one to the alarm main controller, one to the attic, just in case, and 8 to the whole house audio controllers (Russound MCA88 system). Basement is still mostly not wired, but I will do it later. A good day with the only naff being a mishap while drilling out a hole. The bit caught and I wasn't prepared and I torqued the hell out of my wrist and forearm, the one I had surgery on a couple years ago. It is all swollen and bruised, but doesn't seem broken. It twisted so far I was worried I popped some screws out of the steel plate holding the bone together..
Once all drops were done, I cleaned up the wiring a bit.

Project accomplished, too much to do at work so cutting my week of vacation short to get back into the office.

Nice work. As a former closet monkey I know what a pain in the ass running cable is. Even with nice new construction like yours you always run into trouble somehow.

I just ran a few Cat5 lines in my attic... inner circle of Hell work, that was. Total props on that many runs!

Maybe 3 hours or so?
The printer is a Tevo Tarantula. Prints can be as large as 7" x 7" x 7". Under $200 shipped from China... the included instructions suck but there are a very good set of youtube assembly videos I found.
So I could print the acrylic pieces (as PLA or ABS) but you would still need 4 stepper motors (X,Y,Z, and extruder) as well as aluminum 2020 and 2040 extrusions to mount everything, controller, power supply, motherboard, belts, wheels, etc.
Probably easier and cheaper to get the kit, to be honest.
-
Oh, that is reasonable, I wasnt trying to have you make me one ::)...I was just wondering about the concept of such a project.... A machine that can build itself is always cool.
-
I have been printing upgrades and stiffening parts, which is kind of funny.

Not really. It's common for the lower end printers. I spent the first week I got my anet 8 printing upgrades.

Giving a listen at work. I dig it.
Speaking of electronic music, Gary Numan's new album "Songs From A Broken World" is pretty good.
I try to listen to all the newly released albums on Rhapsody/Napster that are tolerable (usually end up skipping country and rap after the first few minutes of an album).
This was one of the few unexpected surprises that I'll actually listen to again.

I've been hyped on that album for 2 months and he did not disappoint. It sounds phenomenal on a good sound system.
Who would have ever thought the Cars dude would go goth industrial? He's doing a concert in Houston in December and I've been vibrating since I found out.

Sure, no argument there, but he kinda came out of nowhere circa 2000 and went full on NIN with better lyrics.

The other day I stopped at a red light. And about 15 full seconds later a car slammed into me. I pulled over, and the guy pulled in behind. His car was crushed in at the front. He made a clean spot on my bumper. He claims he was brushing the hair out of his face. He kept his distance, even though I was laughing about it. My truck was fine so I said he can have my information if he wants but I was in a hurry. Then I told him his dad was gonna kill him. He agreed and tears started pouring. I rolled my eyes and left.

Cool. I can distinctly remember when those came out. We have a family friend that bought one new and has been driving it ever since. 300k+ miles.
We previously had a 99, all the seals went bad. Trunk was constantly full of water. Sold it for $2,000 and it didn't rain again in San Antonio for 5 years.

All I ever played on it was Cricket and I was just as terrible at that as I am at everything else.

Well, to be perfectly honest, it did make me pause and reflect on all the things in my life that have been at an absolute standstill since the Thursday besides Harvey hit. So at least one thing has been sorted out.

Speaking of Amazon...
Inktober is coming up. It's a global artist initiative created by popular artist Jake Parker back in '09 to help improve drawing/inking skills by creating one drawing for each day of October and posting it to social media with the accompanying hashtag. For each day, Jake has put a list of words to help inspire the drawing of that day.
Here's a few drawings I did last year:
This year I figured I'd go the extra distance and buy some high quality ink pens/markers, and nice heavy weight paper for this Inktober's submissions. Normally for inking I just use whatever ballpoint or gel pen I have laying around the house, but this year I figured I'd do it more legit.
I ordered a bunch of copic markers and Ink Brush pens off Amazon, which aren't cheap, but when it arrived one of the fine point pens was missing a cap and had it's tip broken off. Another pen was missing entirely.
So I submitted a ticket with Amazon stating the problem with my order, and a rep contacted me right away, offered to re-send the missing and broken pens, AND refund me my entire order ($70!!).
They didn't even want me to send the broken pen back, or take a picture for evidence or anything.
Chuffed! :o

I took a gamble on a Rave Racer cab on Craigslist. The post said it played blind. He said he bought a working replacement monitor, but he couldn't get it to work. I gave him 175 bucks after I confirmed it played blind. Whoever wired the monitor signal wires did it completely backwards. I rewired the connector. The picture came to life, but it rolled vertically and I could not adjust it to lock in. I swapped the sync wire from H+ to H- and it is perfect. I am pretty new to arcade repairs so I am pretty chuffed about my rudimentary sleuthing. The only problem now is odd. The game plays fine, but the ffb doesn't work. When you turn the wheel it engages the view change button sometimes, and the view change button doesn't work at all. When I get home from work today I will pop open the control panel and start a restoration thread.

If the monitor was wired backwards, there is a decent chance that the controls are as well. I'd start by going over the harness and you might get lucky.
-
Thanks. I am going to tear into it tonight, and I will post my results. One other issue. The monitor says it needs an isolation transformer. The monitor is not plugged into an isolation transformer. The monitor power runs from the 200 watt power supply to the monitor. Is there an isolation transformer inside that 200 watt power supply? I have not turned the machine back on since I noticed the isolation transformer warning.
-
That would be DC voltage, which wouldn't run it, so I'm guessing that the power supply sends AC voltage prior to the conversion. You got a pic? An isolation transformer looks like a big coil of copper wires around a square of metal.
Something like this:

It could be internal though.
-
I would be wondering if the replacement monitor is even the same thing, and possibly doesn't even need one.... (And curious as to if there is any burn on it)

I will start a new thread in restoration.

Reinstalled my pin2dmd into my Terminator 2 pin, and used wire taps for the 12V this time...... and it didnt break!
Some scenes aren't triggering the color replacements since I removed the profanity rom and installed the LED ghosting patched L8 rom instead; so I gotta figure out why. That's a little naffy, but Im chuffed over all. Going to be finalizing the Lethal Weapon 3 color files next and I have a replacement PF on the way for my Comet!

I also deleted over 1,000 of my posts without anyone noticing. I am between colorization projects so I might tackle WCS94. Can't get you a discount but they'll be a group buy for them when I release Lethal Weapon 3 , it doesnt matter that you dont put it in a LW3 pin. You'd have to privately beta test the files since I lack an actual WCS94 pin.

How much are they?
Supposedly there's some Mortal Kombat character cheering animations in WCS 94 but I've never seen them in real life. Think you have to defeat all the teams and do a bunch of victory laps or something.
-
There are MK cheat codes (or special moves or something) on JM. I own JM, but have never seen them.

About $200 : https://germangamingsupplies.com/RGBPINDMD-SET-V3-ready-to-go-128x32-Standard-DMD_1 (https://germangamingsupplies.com/RGBPINDMD-SET-V3-ready-to-go-128x32-Standard-DMD_1)
ColorDMD brand displays are $380 but WCS isnt colored for their system yet.
I looked at all the raw ROM data and there is 1 mortal kombat animation, looks like Raiden in his MKII gear:
There are about 6 frames, just zooming in on his face, there are 2 of them ^
I stitched together a few sequences so you have a general idea of what to expect:
-
$200 all in?
-
$200 all in?
$10 to activate the firmware and that's it. You just tap12V for the pin2DMD and load a mcrosd card with the files (use an OLD crappy 512MB one, plenty of room)
There are MK cheat codes (or special moves or something) on JM. I own JM, but have never seen them.
Looking at the rom data theres 2 MK logos at 0x449 and 0x44A
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=152888.0;attach=362642;image)
There is also a 6 square box but no MK3 symbols
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=152888.0;attach=362644;image)
So its likely the box is filled with numbers like 010010 (which disables blocking in MK3)
I found a thread on pinside that shows a screen: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/johnny-mnemonic-is-there-an-owners-club-yet/page/6#post-1299765 (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/johnny-mnemonic-is-there-an-owners-club-yet/page/6#post-1299765)
It looks like its using the MK logos above, on that screen

So, $210 and I've got everything I need besides the microsd card?
-
So, $210 and I've got everything I need besides the microsd card?
Yes, depending on conversion rate and shipping but there's nothing else to buy. You just tap 12V and replace the old DMD with the new one. I think GGS ships it with an SD card.
-
Thanks, I'll be keeping an eye on this. It's my favorite DMD and I've owned mine 12 years.....

Man I wish I had room for pinball. So the colorized dmd stuff.... is it integrated into pinmame yet? I had the urge to make a mini pinball unit, but I went over to the old vpforums and it's even more confusing than it used to be. I understand how some of my users feel having to cobble together stuff to get it working.

With ColorDMD, AFAIK no. With Pin2DMD yes. You can have the pin2dmd play the files from something like .//tables/AltColor/ I believe it requires a specific DLL.
Haruman still has my gingerballs , but when I get it back I plan to write up a quick how to and what not. Worked on WCS for like 4 hours, its gonna take a while.
-
Yeah man that would be helpful. The next pick n pay is dec 1st and since I can get monitors for practically nothing now would be the time for me to build. I might be able to get away with a solitary full sized cab, but I'd really have to de-clutter.
-
Holy freakin Chufftober.
First the Rave Racer and now this.
I picked up this Pole Position with 2 board sets. A PP1 and a PP2. The monitor worked, but everything else was dead. He wanted 300 bucks. I talked him down quite a bit.
I got it home and went straight for the fuse block. A 32V 25amp fuse was blown.
Threw in a fuse and The PP1 board is giving RAM errors and won't play.
Threw in the PP2 board and ...
There is graphical corruption, but the player cars, opponent cars, and track are all perfect.
The game plays like it should.

Oh, on the PP board, go to KLOV and search for the "5v mod" for PP.
-
Yeah the guy before me already did that. There are a couple of smoked pins on the board side of the edge connector. There is also a bunch of bad solder work on the board that errors out.
-
Too bad you're not local, I could fix those smoked pins.
-
I read up on it a bit, and I am going to take a whack at it when I have time. Having a playable cab takes a lot of the pressure off.
-
Texas institution Asleep at the Wheel doing a free concert with free beer for Hurricane Harvey victims in Rockport. The situation is better here but still debris and destroyed buildings everywhere.
-
So far I have been stupidly lucky in the arcade machine repair hobby. I took the edge connector from the non working board set and swapped it to the playable board set. The graphical glitches disappeared. I now have a fully functional Pole Position II machine.

Go buy a lottery ticket. Now.

I just bought a generator for $50
Pretty stoked being that my town is besieged by wildfires and My mother is out of power.
Only down side is that I thought I would get to be a great small engine mechanic. (I've been watching videos!)
But I get the non running generator home and can't resist pulling on it a few times. Sucker starts up on 4th pull. runs lights no problem.
I didn't even get to test for spark.
But it's still awesome!
For those that care, it is a Generac SVP5000 from around 1997
it has 5000 running amps and 6250 surge.
Guy changed the oil and spark plug I thought for sure I would have to clean the carb. But I started it 3 times. Still I will clean it up. I did watch all those videos after all.
-
Generators are a great thing to have now that our proud nation has become a third-world country as a result of climate change related natural disasters and a crumbling infrastructure. We've used ours twice this year already. :(
-
I don't know...I kind of agree but I remember the power going out as a kid multiple times a year. now I have it go out once a year maybe.
We never had a generator, we just lit candles and played board games until bed time. I always thought it was fun.
Fast forward to adulthood and its your food spoiling in the freezer...I still don't need a generator. But for $50 and a bit of no pressure small engine practice. it's worth it.
Plus I can take it camping...
...or if I don't go camping I can use it when I rent a bounce house...
...or I can wait till the one time the power goes out longer than 5 minutes and charge my wife's cell phone and be a hero.
...Shhh...no one tell her that I have several inverters and batteries capable of charging said cell phone...
...---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- $50 10 horse engine is not bad either...
...I'm just searching for reasons to be happy when my town is burning down around me. Northern CA Fires...Sigh.
...Still chuffed about the Generator.

So you can now get a virtual pinball machine for like $1,500 shipped from China. With fresh Stern artwork, plug and play.
Someone sacrifice your wallet.
-
Got a link?
Hmm.... that means there are Chinese distributors with virtual pinball parts.... Half of that $1500 is probably shipping, maybe more. Buy the monitors and electronics and get the rest of the parts local.

Haruman cut the advanced prototype gingerball kits, he shoul dbe selling them soon. They are minis though, not full sized machines
-
I don't think I like the ones from China pbj, they have huge borders around the playfield ..... I don't think they bothered to de-case the monitors.
-
If you're gonna be a fussbudget then build it yourself.
-
Was there a discussion of color Dmd kits? Should I get one for my TAF? Is there one that doesn't cost 400 ---goshdarn--- dollhairs?!
-
It's been quite a while since I was involved in the pin/vpin scene but I was thinking that someone was working on an open-sourced solution at one point....did anything ever become of it?

lechuk, you can get a pin2dmd for 200 but that game isnt colored yet. Seems to be in demand, so I could probably do it after Im done world cup soccer.
my chuff is mentioned in the SNES classic thread..... I GOT ONE :) super happy especially since I didnt get an NES classic

Thumbed through your pinside thread. Nice to see I'm still creating unintended drama. Your work looks great so far.
-
Thumbed through your pinside thread. Nice to see I'm still creating unintended drama. Your work looks great so far.
pinside is drama. Im still chipping away at the game. Apparently the game has "random fireworks" and Im kinda gonna make them not random. I'll need to find all 5 triggers (initial firework can be in 1 of 5 places) and just have each of the triggers play the same firework animation instead of all the variations , but I have to do it for like 10 different scenes, so its kind of a pain in the dick.
I think Im going to do TAF next and then hang up my coloring shoes.
-
Yay!

Walked in at 8:15, walked out at 8:17 with this....

Nice. Which store?

Astrodome Target. One some SNES subreddit (there's like a million of them) people were posting that Targets in Texas were being stocked last night.
Figured... eff it... it's like 2 blocks off my commute. I walk in, 3 employees standing in the electronics section.
"Uh, do you have SNES Classic?"
"Yes, they're over here"
"...!!!!"
They're limiting them to 1 per customer, so I told my friend to go pound sand.

Nintendo is making good on their word, so maybe people can stop complaining now. Or, you know, they could just get a Pi.

So I finally got around to spending some time with the CNC at my Makerspace. I decided to use Haruman's plans for the "Degenetron" for my first real project. Spent many hours fiddling with VCarve Pro at home working on the toolpaths and getting things just right...
Went into the makerspace the next day and their version of VCarve is an older version and couldn't open my file. Had to re-DL Haruman's vector and re-do the paths. Luckily, I'd learned a lot the previous night and it only took about half hour getting it re-tooled to their version. Started the cut, and it went well! Right up till the end, where I'd accidentally chosen another version of the same tool for the last cut - the main profile cut to actually remove the panels. Sooo... toolchange, in software at least. I forgot to re-engage the spindle at this point and Z crashed the head.
Re-zero the spindle, re-start the cut... and my X was off by about 3/4" now, and the machine proceeds to cut right through the previous cuts... total waste.
Went back the next day to try again with the previous days lessons in hand and total success!
WARNING - volume is not lowered and the machine is loud! Mute the vid...

Yep, was here for a conference. Get a graduate degree, find a weird niche, demand an annual conference as part of your compensation package = free trips.
Rains too much, but very pretty when it's sunny. Everyone has been very friendly. Of course, I am spending a fortune and then GTFO. Went on a tour of the particle physics lab at UBC, very interesting things happening there.
Last time I was here was 30 years ago as a young child. Always remembered it being very modern with lots of glass and steel. I stand by that assessment.

Yep, that's Vancouver. The summertime is amazing; for 2 months out of the year you really get to see how beautiful Vancouver can really be. There's also a sweet spot during Spring where all the cherry blossom trees in Vancouver are at full bloom. The whole city has this pink and green look to it at that time. But yeah, it rains for most of the year.
People are genuinely friendly there. I don't know, I grew up there so I was one of the ---uvulas--- who cursed all the transplants that lives there now, driving housing prices up and forcing my friends who couldn't afford to live there anymore out to the sticks. I guess my wife was a transplant too. I curse her everyday though. ;) But she would say Vancouverites are friendly, but they keep you at arms length. People have a hard time making friends there.
Last time I was here was 30 years ago as a young child. Always remembered it being very modern with lots of glass and steel. I stand by that assessment.
This is why it's a popular filming location for a slew of TV and Movies.

We also nicknamed it HongKouver, not only for having a huge Chinese (Asian majority in general) population, but also the downtown core looks like Hong Kong. Lots of green glass sky-raises tightly packed into a small area of space.
Glad to hear you had a good time up there. I always recommend to my American friends that if you're going anywhere in Canada, Vancouver is the most beautiful and diverse place to visit. The food is top notch, especially Sushi -- cheap, high quality, and readily available everywhere -- and it's one of the few places where you can go to the beach and up to ski slopes on the same day.
-
Houston's already got the Asian thing on lock but the Chinese population in Vancouver was startling. (I'm told it's all people that fled Hong Kong when England gave it back?)
Was kind of funny to land in Texas and suddenly there were fat people, dudes taller than me, and the grubby restrooms with stall gaps that I'm accustomed to. I felt like a bull in a china shop up there.
I was at kind of a loss figuring out what actual industry is there to support it all....
Lots of public marijuana use. Lots. Was not accustomed to that. I mean, I lived in the Caribbean for years and it wasn't that open.
Anyway, it was fun. The end.

You should come to ZapCon, so you can see his magnificent in person. Maybe you guys can even split the cost of a room. Think of all the possibilities.

Props for building better worlds, Jim.

Pro Tip: If you want to know what anyone on this forum looks like just look in a mirror. Height weight and ethnicity might vary a bit, but retro gamers kind of have a specific look, for better or worse. Myself I'm just trying to figure out who the handsome man that watches me brush my teeth in the morning is.

So other than the 3 major defining characteristics, we all look the same? I'm curious as to what you think my(our?) look is.

You'd never catch me wearing white socks and cargo shorts.
But really, what is the "specific look" all retro gamers share?
-
The ensemble looks fine to me. :dunno
-
Oh it's fine, I'm not knocking other people's tastes. It's just not for me.
I think I own maybe one pair of white socks. Never ever owned cargo shorts, even when they were a new fashion thing.
I'm just saying not "all retro gamers have a specific look", if that's what H_C is referring to.

I’d wear cargo shorts every day if I could....
-
So the cliche look of retro gamers for at least 10 years is cargo shorts, crew socks, nerdy t-shirt, and Nikes. My ensemble was deliberate. I blew it with the Converse, though.
Anyway, I'll probably be at ZapCon if any of you want to make out.

Shotgun anus!
I have some nerd shirts, but I like a nice polo. Jeans > cargo pants. I have nikes because reeboks dont fit me well. I was more curious about hair/facial hair , mostly because Ive had a billion variants in the last 2 years alone.

We are all unshaven hooligans wearing t-shirts way beyond the age most people wear t-shirts. Glasses, a receding hairline and a bit of pudginess are also common due to the general age group we fall in. The shorts are also a thing... most middle-aged men don't wear shorts like that, but we tend to.
When I got in line for the snes classic I saw the best example I've seen in a while... should have taken a pic. There was really tall me, really fat me, Asian me, and in a rare appearance, black me!
Yeah, yeah we are all beautiful snowflakes.. if that's what you guys want to believe that's cool.

Wow, I check off zero of your boxes, except a half a check mark on tshirts.... they are comfy. Some of mine are "nerdy" but most are solid colors, no ringer tees.
-
T-shirts, check.
Cargo shorts, check.
Flip flops, check. (It is phoenix, tho, and still in the 90's here)
Glasses, check.
Still have all my hair, tho, although I am going grey (and not even 40 yet, sheesh)

There's a red-headed stepchild in every family Malenko. ;)
For the record the average lifespan of a guy is 78, so around 37 is middle-aged. It's been moved up because old people hate admitting they are old. Myself I've recently turned 38 and I welcome old age. I miss my hair though.... I don't know if I can pull off baldness like my heroes Patrick Stewart and Shawn Connery.
-
I check a lot of the stereotypical boxes too. Honestly, most of those attributes seem like they apply to the majority of middle aged guys who just want to be comfortable. The only time I dress up anymore is when I have to. Usually that’s for a wedding or a funeral or the occasional “date night” with the wifey...

Oh hell yeah, that green one would make a killer jack-o-lantern. What a cool pumpkin!
I'm a huge carving nut, this year was pretty mellow but I'd go all out if I found one like that.

Weighs 29.8 pounds, too. :notworthy:

The color of that green pumpkin reminds me of what a person looks like the day after a long night of drinking. I think it would make a great candidate for something like this:

Well, not until this evening... but I'm recycling the pirate costume. A "been here forever" costume shop in Houston is shutting down, my wife got some custom made fairy queen outfit probably used in a play for $45. Plan on heading back there after Halloween and seeing how desperate those prices get...

Seriously, you should see how excited family and friends are on Facebook that I got a Galaga. It’s like I don’t have 17 other games.

You just need to pull the skin tight and take your time and go slow. If your nerves about it go get some Nair (http://www.naircare.com). Just don't leave it on to long or you'll burn the biscuits.
-
Problem with Nair is it's hard to keep it confined, so you end up melting off half your pubes. If you're going for the infant look, it's good.
Conditioner on the target areas, hit them 2 or 3 times with a Mach 3, you're good for 72 hours.

Found out that Castlevania SOTN can be had for $10 on the XboxOne. Already have Crissaegrim and am dicing my way through the upside down castle like a beast. A BEAST.
-
Never understood the appeal of that game. It's Super Metroid, only not as good because the weapons are weird. I think mostly having to play as Alucard instead of a Belmont is what killed it for me. imho castlevania peaked at Super Castlevania IV. I keep meaning to give it a second chance and try to play through again, but there are so many games, movies, arguments, ect.... who has the time.
Since you like it, good on you for finding a deal on it.

Never understood the appeal of that game. It's Super Metroid, only not as good because the weapons are weird.
Hundreds of weapons and items, multiple endings, multiple playable characters, transformations , special moves, items with special moves, an entire extra castle, optional "familiars", bosses bigger than the screen, etc.
Not sure how the weapons are weird, like the rune sword spelling out Verboten? Doesn't sound weirder than Samus rolling up into a ball. I loved Super Metroid so I wont be saying anything bad about it, but I will say I liked SotN better. I still have my original PSX disc. If you think CV peaked at SCV4, you've missed a ton of GREAT CV games especially the trilogy on GBA.
back on topic, chuffed I got Mighty Number Nine for $2.97 . Its worth $3, but its no MegaManX

I like it in theory, until I start to play it. I dunno, the controls just weren't tight enough for me or something. Then again all Castlevania games have been plagued with odd controls.... except for Castlevania IV of course, it's perfect. All of those extra things you mentioned... that's part of the problem. Metroid only gives you what you need to keep you focused on the task at hand. SOTN, not so much. I'll remind you all that SOTN originally didn't sell well, so I'm not the only one that was thrown off by it. Like I said, I intend to give it a second chance later on.
-
I got pissed it was never released in English on the Sega Saturn, so I totally skipped that one. The GBA games were alright but I got bored 2/3s of the way through. The weird one with the mirrors and constant companion on DS was dullsville.
-
The only one that I've liked in quite some time was the xbox 360 Lords of Shadow reboot. It's very underrated. Now it's sequel... that's crap. I trudged through it just for the story and turns out it wasn't even good for that... it just... ends. I hadn't felt that ripped off since the nes days.
-
It is truly a wonder of our modern times...

Nah, man, we only clear the shelves of milk when a category 4 hurricane is about to nail us. And people are super defensive about it! Afterwards, I joked at a staff meeting about how, "that milk will come in real handy when the power goes out" and you'd have thought I'd shot someone's dog.
That's alright, according to them, I'm the one that "over-reacted," but hey, I spent a week in a hot tub on sunny days up in Oklahoma sipping on local wine while Houston sat in ankle deep water for a week.

You don't wear shoes in the house.... you'll get the carpet dirty. What are you, some kind of animal? :)
-
Well, I'd say the woman's sweater and cthulu was a success....

I was an animal and didn't even know it, until I married an Asian woman.

Oh look, the HAPA whining about conversations that don't really happen.
:applaud:
-
HAPA... sounds like a lazy millennial's term. You're such a trendster.

You both wear strange hats and have hipster-ish vibes. Stop all the fighting and get to the part where you kiss. Like Mr. Rogers I think you are special just for being you.

I always figured you batted for the other team. Not that there’s anything wrong with that...

No, call me a romantic, but I always root of love, even the gross love between you guys. It's ok, you aren't ready admit that forbidden passion so you are deflecting. It's cool man, you be you.

Put the bottle down.

The only folks I ship on this forum are Mal and Steve. I ship them so hard.

I can see that. Keep the hope alive.... love.... finds a way. :)

So what is it Howard, are you a pitcher or a catcher? By all accounts you definitely seem like the catching type. Either way, we accept you for who you are, and your life choices. :)

My friend had that same trash stash until he was 25.

I just installed my Asteroids Deluxe multigame kit. I didn't realize there was an analog to digital board available. I definitely need to order that up. My son thinks lunar lander is cool. One of my friends will be happy about the addition of original Asteroids. He always complains that Asteroids Deluxe is too hard.

Put a Ms Pacman and Johnny Mnemonic out on route last week. Went in today to make sure nothing was broken and maintain my dart boards. A few kids were begging their parents to play, but the parents gave em the old "we're all out of quarters" excuse. So I threw up some service credits on both (gotta get them little crumb catchers addicted) and holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---... There's ---smurfing--- money in the coin boxes! :woot

I wish I could go back to a day where I hadn’t heard their seven songs ten million times.

AC/DC? Or Abba? It's gotta be Abba... Cuz AC/DC has 8 or 9 songs...

Made the annual pilgrimage to Laschet's in Chicago. Good German beer. Sauerbraten, spaetzel, and red cabbage. Schnapps and streusel for dessert. Good times.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180107/a3ed0763e365b9f21bf021f239e81d3b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180107/dad1e2e3c013dde54fbd46e86bf9bf35.jpg)
