Im pretty close to finishing my Control Panel, all I need to do is finish designing the Overlay, and Wait for my T-Molding, then my Control Panel will be complete... but I wanted to show off the CP as it is until then...
The Black covering is not Laminate, it is in fact "Truck Bendliner" in a spray can ;)

Nice!
I've been thinking of using that bed-liner on a handful of different projects...
How easy was it to apply?
How long did it take to dry?
Do you like the way it looks/feels on the wood?
TIA...

How difficult is it to apply an even coat?
-
What's with the "huge tracks...of land"? Why so much cp?
-
Maybe it's for old people so they can lean on it while they play. j/k
-
The bedliner took two coats to make even, so not too bad there. Point of advice, spray multiple directions, i.e. across, up/down, diagnal, circle...
There is really not that much land between the spots, but I left room for "expansion". I plan on (in the future) to add Drink holders on the sides (thats why there is 4" overhand on the sides), and a trackball will go in the middle eventually (read as: when I get the money), possibly a spinner. But I also added space between area's so there is room to lean on (not just old people :) ) Also, I wanted a nice overhang so that the hinges (not installed yet) are hidden well.
Currently the board stays together with two strips of velcro... Holds actually quite well, doesnt slide around at all...
Heres a picture of the wiring and the velcro... :)

Something else I just noticed...
Those buttons seem to be a little far apart... (Maybe an extra 1/2" over what most people are doing)
Most layouts I've seen are at around 1.5" apart... What is your button spacing?
Is that comfortable for you?
Looks good! When do we get to see the whole cabinet (or is this just a CP box)?

The button spacing is 2" This is because every Mortal Kombat and/or Street Fighter Cabinet Ive measured so far has a 2" Spacing for the buttons, also 2" on a lot of other Arcade Cabinets Ive measured, 2" seems to be more common then 1.5" in the arcades Ive visited, so I decided to go with whats more common.
I find it comfortable, but then I also have big hands ( Almost 8.5" from tip of middle finger to bottom of palm ). :-\
-
How pricey is that BedLiner, and what brand did you use?
-
I do like it, but I do have to agree it looks a little over sized, especially the space inbetween the buttons. If it works for you .. thats cool though.
I like the idea about velcro. I might do that, but i think my panel is gonna not move about anyway during play.

Get some friends, and slam all sticks would could be used simultaneously in the same directions. That should give you your maximum directional force to test with. Mine was fin unanchored with one person, and 2 people on most games. But as soon as 2 people were playing a game like a fighter, it would tilt up and back or down and forward depending on what was happening. Just remember that when the joystick hits the max direction, a lot of the force that was pushing is converted to upwards force, since half the stick is pushing up (sort of) on the bottom of the CP.

The Bedliner is made by Duplicolor and is availible at any Auto Retailer that carries duplicolor paints. ( O Reilly Auto Parts for sure, thats where I got mine, and if they dont have, they CAN order, dont let them tell you differently ;) )
And me and my brothers have tested the panel a lot, from MK3 to KI, from KoF to SFx2 (x3^6 x 10^9999)...
So far, no slipping, but hinges or some form or fashion will be installed eventually :)

Just wanted to throw on my Overlay, and get some feedback on it... Any Ideas or Suggestions would be greatly Appriciated...
Yes, its bigger in the other format...
-
yeah looks pretty good but get rid of the TMNT dude.
looks weird(doesnt match)
Put akuma in there ! ;)
-
I like the overlay, minus the turtle. He is cool, but that bit of artwork is in a different style than the other ones...
I also just like the finish on your CP...looks really slick.
-
Mmm... Cammy... And in my favorite flav - I mean color...
-
Ok, Ok... The Turtle is out... But what to replace him with... Heres SNAAAKE's Suggestion, Akuma... Any Others?
-
leave the turtle. (michael right?, i think he blue). just make him darker overall. a deeper green. and perhaps swap him with donetello (purple), he's my fav ;D. gotta love the bo
-
Leave Leonardo if you like. Its your Machine.
You might be able to find another turtle that matches the rest of the art a bit better if thats what is bothering you.
-
Hum, get rid of Wolverine and put some SF2 character like Vega or something! ;D
-
Oh, man.. that first pic with the TMNT.. I just about pissed myself when I first saw that.. maybe not intentional, but thanks for the needed laugh ;D
I can see the full cab with marquee: "TMNT vs. Street Fighter"? :o
-
Amra that looks better - Akuma is a bada$$. And the butt grabbing is kept to a minimum ;)

Man or woman! Please tell me that you're gonna use up that huge space you have and put a trackball and spinner! :D
Probably i'm gonna make you like yours! It looks simple, cute and very useful too!
-
I gave in to my temptations... Sorry but Akuma had to go, indeed he is a Badass character, but I must put my true love on there... yes...
-
Ok, now.. this isnt the real thing, this is just a photo-chop job, its the first image, with a fake overlay image added, just to get an Idea of what it might look like... any comments?
-
lol... i'm sorry.... but i couldn't help myself... i just love the strategic placement of the bottom right and middle buttons over cammy's...uhh... rack....
the overlay looks pretty clean as it is... keep us posted and show us plenty of pics.... :)

Heres the Overlay Installed!!
Ill show a couple more pics in a few, Kinkos was the printer, colors arent washed out (as you can see) and the print was perfect in size...
So, all in all my experience with Kinko's is very good! I just told them ahead of time that color and size were very important because they needed to be a specific size. They wrote on the memo section that I wanted everything double checked and sure enough, everything was perfect :)
-
another pic... ill show one more to show print quality of 300dpi...
-
Ok, last one...
-
Hee hee, is it possible to show the print quality of 300dpi printing with a 100 dpi jpeg image?
That is sort of like the television advertisments where they try to show you how good of a picture their set has. ;D
-
I was merely pointing out that the image looks good, not pixilated, and is not vector or nine bazillion dpi.

Or when they have the commercials for dvd quality on vhs's. I love that. :)
-
aww :(
Where is akuma...lol.
It looks pretty good.
Whats the dimention and how much was the print ?
Just wondering..I mean kinko... :-[
but everything went perfect for you..good to know ! :)
-
dimensions = 36" x 20"
cost = 49.78
-
I don't get the reason you used the bedliner spray as an undercoat to your overlay?
2" spread for butons was the old Mortal Kombat spread. Capcom never used that spacing in their machines. They used to use 1 1/2" but now we use 1 5/8" spacing for the grid. Our button overlays have that pre-punched in there.
Maybe ya just have really big hands...
High quality work! And I think that you should use the characters that you like. I'm sure you'll play TMNT eventually on it, and it's such a fun group game.
