Title: New Bartop taking shape...
Post by: Richie_jones on March 25, 2012, 03:32:56 pm
Hi

Been working on this for a few days and just thought i`d share some progress pics,  would appreciate any comments, good or bad!!!

First side cut with a jigsaw using rail guides.  Then clamped to another piece of MDF and routered an exact copy using the flush cutting bit..

The two sides with the base and back board

Even though i`m using a full size ATX board and full size PSU, i`m trying to keep the size of the cab as small as possible.  This is the reason i`ve decided to mount the speakers in the top panel and not under the marquee.

Control panel cut and ready to mark up for the joystick/buttons

Buttons in place, but suffered some blow out on the MDF so will have to make up a new CP

Dell 19inch Moniter mount in place, I can unhook the moniter from the mount without removing any screws,

Looks good.  Will there be artwork on the CP?

Artwork on cp and both sides, cab painted black.  to be honest im really struggling with the artwork, have no idea what to have.  i was planning on a ghouls n ghosts theme hence the spear like speaker grills , but can't find any decent high res images on the net and budget to tight for pro job...

Thanks. Yeah loosely based on this design but due to full size atx board full size gfx card and psu have had to add a few inches on.

Great start, and welcome to BYOAC

Thanks great site

When do you plan to cut your t-molding slots?

If i can find 12mm t molding 3/8 chrome i think id fit that but otherwise edges will be painted black ...

What size is your monitor?

I've found you want to always drill in from the side you want to keep, to avoid the blowout. You could still fill that with wood filler and save it, its not even that bad.

With MDF and button holes, drill a pilot bit.  Drill half way down with your spade bit (tip will just start to poke out of the other end), then flip it and finish punching through.  No blowout on either end.

Hats off to you, good sir! That'd a great idea!

Evil its a 19inch moniter

Bit more progress today...

got the two 120mm fans up top...Plus cut a bottom air intake and a power supply hole...

Also cut a 120mm fan into the underside of the cab, to draw air in over the CP and out through the top of the case...This one glows blue also so hopefully will give a blue glow under the Cab..

Have ordered new RGB buttons for the control panel so am doing away with the multi colours.  Also got an pacled64 on the way...

Im going to have to re cut the CP as i didn`t realise how deep the RGB led buttons are, i think they`ll interfere with the ones along the bottom...

Looks great.  Somehow, I don't think cooling is going to be a problem.  Your machine might actually take off.

looks good!  You should make the vent mesh run in the same direction though...

Im unsure what you mean...do you mean the mesh should be on the outside?

No, it looks like the mesh on the left fan runs vertical and the one on the right runs horizontal... Or is it just my eyes?

Have spent the last few days spraying the cab Matt Black..

Its been difficult to be honest, i`m not keen on spraying just seems to take ages between coats, waiting for the last one to dry...

Its not perfect but i am pleased with it, theres a couple of small runs on the back..The sides and CP will be covered with artwork...

The top came out quite well

I`ve also modified the power supply by soldering on the monitor cable to the incoming mains.  This will leave me with only the one lead out the back to power the Cab..

Currently spraying the monitor bracket and Control panel then hopefully i`ll be able to put it all together and enjoy some serious gaming...

Slowly taking shape

Even though I can`t wait till its finished i feel i`ll miss working on it when its finished..I`ve really enjoyed every minute...Maybe i`ll try a jukebox next...

Motherboard tray installed.  I cut this out of an old Coolermaster case i had laying around

Wiring most of the components up...I still need a marquee light..I cut a load of molex`s off the end of one of the PSU wires and wired the amp direct to 12v..

Even though its a standard PSU, i was surprised how short the cables were, maybe i`m missing an extension or something..See the main cable running over the GFX card...

Thanks for looking....

Or if you are drilling all in one direction clamp another spare bit of material underneath so the flat bit will keep cutting without any unsightly blow out.

Ritchie, great job by the way. Superb.
Also i am playing around with a bartop design at the mo and just wondered what were the rough dimensions of your build?
I have a 19" monitor and just wondered how yours all worked out? I am making templates but would be good for another set of eyes at the problem.
Cheers

Heres a link to some plans kindly supplied to me over on the hyperspin forums..

https://www.yousendit.com/download/M...UnFBNkZqQTlVag (https://www.yousendit.com/download/M...UnFBNkZqQTlVag)

its a scan of the plans from the flat pack builds you can purchase off ebay.

I increased the overall width to 500mm, and also added about an inch all round.  I was using a full size atx board so needed plenty of space.

Make a rough carboard temp first to see if it all fits...

good luck

WoW great looking cab so far this is SO what mine needs to be like i also have ledlit buttons and a 19"and that same amplifier too any help with wiring to power supply apreciated also the link you gave for the plans isnt working bud anyway you can shoot me a PM with a Dload or jpg or a hyperlink apreciated apart from that man its lookin fandabaDOZY :) nice touch with the ebay transfers :D lol gonna so use that did you take button apart to place inside or did you just apply to outter side :) Also im guessing your not having an open style backdoor as i see at least 10 screws :) so if anything happens i guess youll just unscrew and adjust reamend any pros and i also concure power supplies NEVER give enough room with wires its all about the extra money they can earn for extensions unless your good at rewiring extending them yourself :)
Anyhow ill be in the back Waiting om pending breath for updates  :applaud:

Artwork made a huge difference. How wide is the control panel (minus the width of the sides)? I've got my sides all cut out and ready to go and I'd like to get two players worth of controls on my bar top but I don't want to make the unit too wide.

Thanks! That helps a lot. I was planning to go 18" (~457mm) wide on mine, but seeing how well that unit works with 2 sets of controls I might as well go 20" (~508mm) wide and have plenty of room.

Very cool build Richie.  Couple of quick questions.  What adapter is used between the amp and the computer psu power and could you give a tutorial on how to connect the monitor power to the PSU or at least snap some pics on how this was accomplished?  Keep up the good work man.
Title: Re: New Bartop taking shape...
Post by: Drnick on November 22, 2012, 01:55:01 pm
Gonna jump in here and answer that for you :)

The adapter is a solderless dc power connector. Don't know if it is 2.1 or 2.5mm.  I know this as I used them in a project a while back.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/solderless-2.5mm-plug-390564 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/solderless-2.5mm-plug-390564)

I did try this myself without much joy. I suppose it depends on the PSU in question, but I tried this with my Jukebox build and got interference so just ran the amp from a spare PSU I had.

As for connecting the monitor power to the PSU, If the Monitor is a 12V monitor then you would connect it in exactly the same manner as the AMP. If on the other hand the monitor is a 120/240V then I would advise the use of a Y Splitter which has 1 Plug and 2 PC Style connections on it.

This is correct although if you use a y splitter you'll either need two cables to power your cab.
Just solder your monitor cable to the same terminals inside the psu that the power lead goes to. Drill a hole in the psu case and pop your cable out nice and neat...

WOW! Love this build.Found it by pure chance as i'm looking to do a similar build. Couple of questions......how did you cut your 12mm moulding and where did you get the moulding from as i have searched everywhere n they usually come up with either an american sized router bit that ya cant buy here in the uk and as for moulding i can only find 18mm

Thanks for the comments,

You can find 12mm t moulding if every colour but chrome...the t moulding on the cab is 12mm chrome car body trim.  It comes with adhesive on the back but I suggest taking this off, and superglue slowly the whole edge bit by bit,.. No slot needed..

thanks for the swift reply, i actually used the same molding on my nintendo full build but i made the mistake of leaving the foam sticky back tape on and it kept coming off......I'll have to get some of this then :) Also what ohms are your speakers? Do they have to match the ohms of the amp output? And do they sound good? as in better than PC speakers as i have a 2.1 sound system spare but the problem is I'd have no room to install the sub and without the sub they sound rubbish. I have an old nvidia 8800 gtx ill be putting in the system so will take a lot of my room for many extras.

Love ya led fans.....was actually thinking bout getting one of those cooljag programmable fans....they look awesome :)

Speakers are normal 4 inch car speakers, think there 8 ohm, amp was a cheap one from china.

They sound very good, even better now i have tweeters under the marquee to project the sound better, there not mega loud, but these mdf cabinets will rattle if to loud.

Here are some rough plans i used, I increased most measurements to fit my full size mobo and gfx card inside.  definately wouldnt fit in a standard weecade clone..
