Title: Spinner speed for games like Arkanoid and Tempest etc.?
Post by: AE35 on February 19, 2007, 05:24:12 am

Hi all!

I'm thinking; how do I know what spinner speed is 'correct'?

Right now, I can move the bat lightning fast in arkanoid, but maybe that
could spell trouble in making small movements.

The same goes for Tempest...I can really REALLY move the 'ship' fast.

So, what are your regular settings for them spinner games? Sensitivity is at
a 100 on my games(default I think)

Thanks,

Nicholas

sensitivity = A/B*100
A is the resolution of the control being emulated.
B is the resolution of the control being used.

So for tempest the real control had a resolution of 72 counts per rotation.  A=72.

If your spinner has a resolution of 300 and is hooked up to a 4x encoder as most encoders are, this means the spinner has 1200 counts per rotation.  B=1200.

72/1200*100
=6

So you use a sensitivity setting of 6%.

Some people say knob size should be taken into account, but it has no bearing on the counts per 1 rotation.  It just changes the feel.  If you rub the edges of a knob to turn it, a bigger knob will turn slower.  If the game's knob was changed, it would have the same effect.

Yeah! most of the girls I've ever known think it's important. ;D

Also the mouse settings will effect this...  I am unsure of what settings are 'correct' - what mouse settings should be used to obtain the 'original' translation?  For instance, with the TurboTwist 2 and tempest, what should your mouse settings to make the 6% sensitivity setting 'correct'?

Turn off all the extra stuff in your mouse driver, like acceleration/pointer precision.  Set the mouse speed to medium/middle.  Not 100% sure if these affect MAME or not.

Robin may know.

Randy mentioned you should use sensitivity of around 40 with TT2 spinner for Arkanoid and around 80 with the Revenge of Doh.  Not sure about Tempest.

Can we get a list together with all the sensitivity settings.

Can we get a list together with all the sensitivity settings.

Or at least a listing of Count per Revolution by machine to be plugged into the above formula.  That would be a good starting point IMO.

Yeah, I though about the same thing.  Just need some time to get that spinner first

I have already added a PORT_FULL_TURN_COUNT macro to MAME's input system.  But I only have entered 72 for Tempest so far.

Currently this is just to keep track of the info.  I have to get around to outputting it in the XML code.  In the future, it could be used to auto-set the sensitivity.  But I want a lot more verified values before I go through the effort to write the code.

YES!!!  :notworthy:  :notworthy:
I have always thought this would be possible if given the actual numbers for the games.  That would be a tremendous accomplishment in preserving information about the original games IMO.

Sorry but I need a little help with this.
I have an Ultimar SpinTrak spinner but no matter what settings I do for Tempest and Arkanoid, the ship is still very twitchy, I only have to touch the spinner and in both Tempest and Arkanoid the ship jolts to the left or right (in a jiddery fasion) causing death in the case of Tempest by jumping into the next lane when I'm trying to keep it still.
My analog settings for Tempest are: Dial Digital Speed 15, Dial Sensitivity 6.
The speed seems fine whizzing around the grids but I just cannot keep the ship in a firm stationary position when I want to stay firmly in a particular lane of the tempest grid,...pretty much the same as Arkanoid but I have sensitivity in that on 81.

My laptop mouse speed is set to normal (middle of the speed bar in settings) if that matters.

I have a TurboTwist 2 spinner with premium aluminum knob, which feels quality but I would prefer to be wider.

Pointer speed is Windows 10 default medium.

For Tempest, I have analog controls set to digital speed 14 and sensitivity 8. That's just what feels most authentic and playable to me. I have played the original game both back in the day and relatively recently.

Here are my settings for Arkanoid.

Game: Speed-Sensitivity

Arkanoid: 15-30
Arkanoid 2: 15-70
Arkanoid Returns: 10-7

Each game feels playable, but the original feels the best. However, I have the most fun playing Returns.

PS - I have no idea what digital speed affects. Sometimes, it seems like it makes a difference, possibly regarding smoothness, but it might be my imagination.
