Title: Biggest build / screen
Post by: bertman77 on July 17, 2017, 01:46:29 pm
Friend wants to build an upright cabinet, and wants to use his spare 40" TV for the screen.

I'm curious what the biggest screen used in an upright build has been thus far.

Actually constructed the machine, not purchased one.

Bigger doesn't mean better... I know there are a few giant screens out there... but the one done the best is Laythe's Mimic and I am pretty sure it was a 46" wide TV.

Thanks, Ian!

Mimic uses a 46", you were correct.  The same trick would work with a 40" pretty well.

46" gets you about a 22.6"x22.6" square to use.    40" would get you around a 19.6"x19.6" square.   Most arcade machines were about 24" between verticals, so a regular sized cabinet would have something like a  2 1/4" wide black stripe outside the virtual bezel to fill the space. or use about 20" between your verticals and make it a little small.

Or you can build a hummer stretch limo with LED truck nuts, of course;  people also do that.   :D

He didn't specify vertical cab, though

Ever tried going to Best Buy or Sams and walking up to the 40+ screens?  The heat from those displays would be not very comfortable in a cab. Also the resolution is crap for 1080P, and if you wear glasses it is a waste of money for 4K. You will hurt your eyes anyway looking that close to the screen.  Better to wear Google Cardboard VR or Samsung VR minus the furnace in your face.

Wall mounted and a pedestal...

This^

Playing a screen that big for any length of time will be uncomfortable.
As my mum used to say: "you will get square eyes!"

I tried to convince him that a pedestal was the way to go.... we'll see if he listens  :dunno

Just point out to him that he will see every single pixel that close.

Large screens are meant to be viewed at a distance (theres actually a ratio of size to distance) and up close they will look ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!

Not to mention very impractical ;)

You had me at LED truck nuts.

My rule of thumb is that the diagonal measurement of the 4:3 image on the screen should be about equal to or less than the distance from your eyeballs to the screen.
So if your cab and CP put your eyeballs 24" from the screen, a 24-25" 4:3 monitor or 16:9 32" widescreen monitor is as large as I would go.
A pedestal cabinet allows you to get some distance from a bigger monitor.

My own cab has a very narrow CP that puts you fairly close to a 16:9 27" (rotating) widescreen.
It feels about right, but on some of the vertical shmups I find myself moving my head to look at enemies on the edges of the screen.
I like to think I'd do better on those games if I could take in the playfield as a whole without moving my head to look at different parts of the screen.
(I may suck bad enough at shmups that it would not help)

I think I'd prefer a showcase cabinet if I were go to that size.  Being point blank with that kind of screen isn't going to be doing the sprite art any favors.

There is another alternative where I watched an LED that was put in vertically.
