Title: Project : NHL Open Ice conversion
Post by: Malenko on December 12, 2016, 03:51:20 pm
Picked up a Midway cab for next to nothing. Monitor is probably dead, converted to a Target Terror.

Definitely started its life as a Killer Instinct:

And at one time was a Golden Tee:

Honestly dont know what I am going to do with it right now. Thought about doing a full on NHL Open Ice conversion but part of me wants to return it to a Killer Instinct.

EDIT: Open Ice boards too hard to find, Killer Instinct boards too expensive. I have an NBA Jam CP and Jame TE boards, so Jam TE it is.

I need to spend some time with Killer Instinct... I was such a Sega fanboy when that came out I refused to play it.... lol. I think I would also go Killer Instinct.

Bring it back to a Target Terror. People can play fighters in an Xbone.

I know you're being facetious , but the widest LCD you can put in this style of midway cab is 28" and my Broad Street Bullies cab was 4 players :)
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140777.msg1458270.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140777.msg1458270.html)

The thing really holding me back on keeping it a Target Terror is it would require a VGA monitor, well that and Target Terror is available on Wii and terrible. It feels like a rip off Area 51. Im hoping I can sell the guts and Guns to fund the restoration or conversion of the cab.  I've owned a Killer Instinct (both of them actually) and I didnt play it as much as a lot of other games. I'd love to have an Open Ice, but I just dont know how easy its going to be to get the PCB. I can get the full art set for $200. I have a lot of body work to do before I can even worry about that.

I guess I should have named it project : blank slate for now. merp.

Garage still isn't painted.

You do a good job refurbing these cabinets, but I look at those pictures and see nothing but a headache.

How many $20 Outback Steakhouse gift cards will it take to get you to paint it?

This is why I always give cabs the once over before plugging them in:

I wanted to test the monitor without burning down my rape dungeon. So I backed my MKII up to the FrankenKI and plugged the KI monitor into the MKII wiring.
I didnt feel like pulling multiple monitors multiple times.

Needless to say, the monitor was dead.
Done but not pictured:
removed CP Box
removed gun mounts, wires, and guns
removed Target Terror "PCb"
temp repaired power cord (its obviously getting replaced)
removed some paint from the sides. the KI artwork looks terrible (kinda shown)
noticed how ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up the bottom is from the cab not having casters

In between coats:

nice primer coat, most of it will be sanded off, this coat was used to see where the bad parts of the wood are.

Its just been too cold and snowy to get any work done, later in the week its supposed to hit 50, so maybe some bondo will get put on then.

Sanded. I need to clean the entire room of bondo dust prior to starting paint.

so, finished that side:

Almost done the other:

And thanks to MK3Fan aka Xenomorph the main monitor and the spare are both now working.

this restore is really boring.

Sides are done, so I put this ---smurfette--- on her back. Note the 2 big ass holes that need to be patched, and the rusted out leg leveler plates.

I taped off the back of the holes and filled with bondo. I also put glue under the bottom and clamped, because the front plywood was separating. Previous owner removed the leg levelers and just dragged the cab around because of the wheels on the back.

Close up of the glue job and the new leg levelers from Twisted Quarter.

Front after glue is dried, waiting on bondo to cure.

Bondo sanded down with 60, then 120, then 220 grit:

Front primed. I plan on having a sticker cover all this, or I would have removed the coin doors and had a baller paint job for the whole front.

I also removed, cleaned, and repainted the speaker grill. Forgot to take a picture, but here is under the grill sanded and primed waiting for new paint.

When I get home today I plan to put the first coat of black on everything, maybe even a second or thrid before the nights over. T molding *might get put on too. This weekend I have a bunch of electronics work to do.

So finished painting the front and the speaker area:

paint is still wet so it looks kinda blue-ish, but you cant tell there were 2 2" holes in the front.

ignore the dust in the are lookin like tiny holes

She's vertical again!

Orange T-Molding installed
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=355534;image)

Monitor installed along with PCB
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=355536;image)

My old MAME cab's CP box which is actually an NBA Jam CP Box:

PCB mounting next to new switching power supply:

Waiting on the guy to drop off the monitor shroud, I need to get a piece of plexi cut to cover the monitor and I need to get/make a new CP and get art printed

I wear shoes, and the round thing in the background is a space heater. I crank that ---smurf--- up and wait about an hour before going in. Its 50 and rainy, so the garage isnt freezing cold like it normally is in January.

I like the game. But only in multiplayer.
At a previous studio I worked at, we had the cabinet that got frequent use out of the group of us who were competitive about it. We had teams and a season bracket that we kept track of our records. It was a lot of fun, especially with people that knew how to play the game at a higher level.
Would I play it single player? Probably not for long. But it's great in a crowd.
I'm betting this would make good trade bait as well.

I'd rather it be an open ice. I just cant land a board at a reasonable price. If I can get an Open Ice board, I'll likely 2 in 1 switch the games to go between jam and OI.  I went 46 and 2 with Scorpion!

I have ShoRyuKade back, might re-MAME it, might turn it into my vert cab.

Also kind of a kick in the dick when you come back from a 4 month break.

Last we saw this machine it looked something like this:

I sanded and smoothed out the last of the cracks and put this on it:

trimmed to fit:

and put the tmolding back.It will eventually get replaced with red.

A little more detail on this side, if you care.

line the art up based on pictures of the other side:

rough trim for fitment:

after peeling and sticking, start trimming
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=360565;image)

Im aware of the "chew" in the front, I may or may not fix it. You cant make me.

(Crazy Taxi is GONE, replaced with a Lethal Weapon 3 pin)

so I took my old NBA Jam CP box, that was also used in my MAME "Broad street Bullies" build
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=360539;image)

and I sanded it sound and counter sunk the CP hinge bolts
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=360541;image)

then bondo'ed it and sanded it about a billion times
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=360543;image)

didnt take any pictures of it painted black by itself but here it is mounted to the cab:

Got the mounting hardware secured and put the overlay down:

trimmed the edges and holes (yes I fixed the out of place buttons on player 2 eventually)

and its pretty much done:
