Title: STAR WARS MICRO Complete with video!
Post by: Le Chuck on February 11, 2012, 01:12:52 am
Le Chuck Presents:
STAR WARS MICRO

I was hanging out at Toshi station browsing the power convertors when I noticed a sweet Star Wars cabinet over in the corner.  Being a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is (wait, wrong galaxy)... Being that I was used to bulls-eying womp rats in my T-16 back home I thought I'd give it a whirl.  I was in love, I couldn't get enough, so when I got home after changing out a bad motivator on this new flaky R2 unit uncle Owen picked up I set about building my own version.  Aunt Beru said there was no room on the moisture farm for another full size cabinet so I made one 1:6 scale.

Star Wars Micro is a GPH Caanoo based miniature arcade with the first ever fully working miniature Atari Yoke running MAME4All.
:droid 12" tall faithful reproduction of the original Atari Star Wars arcade cabinet
:droid Yoke is hand crafted from aluminum with custom modified 10k OHM axle potentiometers with 60º deflection
:droid Coin Door is hand crafted from aluminum with light up coin plastics  and coin exit buttons in place of coin return
:droid Shroud is hand crafted from dowel rods and bass wood on a 1/4" MDF base
:droid Handheld screen cable was extended 4 inches
:droid Handheld boots directly to game - no menus required
:droid Over 80 working hours of time went into this build

Why not buy a used PSP and use Mame4All with it?

That has an analog stick.

4:3 screen vs wide screen. Other than that no reason. Still leaves me with the same mechanical quandary. Both would work but caanoo can be programmed to boot directly to the game also.

Hmmm, interesting idea.  Modding the XY stick to to XZ will be a challenge.  I do have a Caanoo that I have had apart to do the bezel mod.  You can see some pics of the guts here:

Sammy, can you verify that the caanoo's analog stick is correctly recognized in Star Wars?  Thanks man. Checked out the pics, may have to get a longer ribbon to rotate the screen but other than that it seems feasible.

Yup, the Caanoo stick works as analog in Mame Star Wars.  Although, it is off center a bit with the controller centered.  I'll have to play with a bit more later and see if there is a calibration I can do (charging now).

OK, I figured out that you just have to move the stick around it's full range of travel and Star Wars self calibrates.

Also, I just remembered that I actually have a second Caanoo around here somewhere.  PM me if you want to work a deal.

I've never messed with a Caanoo, but if you remove the analogue stick, you'll probably find that it sits on top a little box that contains 2 minature potentiometers.

You could either get ones of the same value, or reuse the ones from the caanoo if they're not too tiny.  One would have to be mounted sideways inside the yoke itself for the up/down movement.  The other could be mounted to the cab and the yoke attached to the shaft of it.  I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this on such a small scale.

The little box that contains the pots contains springs that keep the pots centered.
Not having them spring loaded and returning to center could screw up calibration.
Most usb gamepads use 10k pots, recognize 5k as center, and don't require calibration.
Like I said, I've never messed with a Caanoo.

I've thought about how I'd design a cheap (sub $20) star wars joke just for fun.
I kept coming back to having a hoop around the bottom that links both grips.
That way the potentiometer could sit in the middle (attached to one side) and both grips would still move together.
Otherwise you'd need to have the grips linked by a shaft with a gear on it that would turn the pot.

Providing that I can remove the pots I think that you're spot on for the build, even on a micro scale.  The X pot gets mounted to the center axis of the yoke in cab.  Yoke support comes from a small lazy-susan bearing.  Rockler has a 3 inch but I am having trouble finding one in the 1 inch range.  May just have to use sleeves and flare the ends so It doesn't pull apart unless somebody has a hobby store that makes wee lazy susan bearings.  The trick is transfering the Y movement of the handle axle to the Y pot.  Watch gears could work but that's way more in-depth than I would like to get.  Easiest would be to incorporate the handle axle directly into the pot post like on the X and then for the other side run the axle into a sleeve supported by the Y pot's mount and run a small U bar from one axle to the other around the pot so I have synched movement exactly like you said.  I will for sure attempt this method.

So IF all that goes to plan then where the hell do I get springs to autocenter everything?  If I have the U bracket on the Y I can anchor to that above and below, that seems like it would work so I'll probably add a U bracket onto the X as well just so I have a good off axis anchor.  I think that would work pretty well actually and avoids all gearing, axle springs, and the like.  Any issues off the top?

Now I just need to get the Caanoo and get started.

but caanoo can be programmed to boot directly to the game also.

do you know how to do that?
I've tried a few things and have got it to load directly to mame4all, but not a specific rom, any info would be much appreciated!
I'd love to be able to do that with a couple projects I have
I too can confirm that Star Wars is playable on the caanoo with the analog nub

Bender, nope.   ;D

I read it in passing and took it to be gospel.  I've been doing some light reading on shelling GPs and am going to dig deeper into that.  If I crack it I'll make sure and document it.  The fact that you haven't found the answer dims my hopes but I'll keep after it once I get the unit.

Caanoo has been purchased and should be here shortly (big thanks to SammyWI  ) at which point I'll get all the software squared away before I start taking things apart.  At that point I'll probably move this over to the project announce section and begin documenting in earnest.

Just a heads up.  (Like I said, I've never messed with a caanoo)

Here is what I was talking about expecting to find inside:

However, I was looking at PSP replacement parts and they look like this:

Thanks for the pics - this won't be tricky at all

From SammyWI's pics it looks more like an Xbox type unit rather than a mysterious no pot psp flat pack.  Either way I'm guessing this will take some time to get the signals right.  Hopefully I'll be able to get a model number for the part off the caanoo and order a few so I can rip them apart as necessary.

The Caanoo is on it's way.  BTW those pics were not taken by me, just a helpful thread I found for modding the bezel.  I didn't take the stick apart when I had it open but I'm sure you'll dig into it soon enough.  Looking forward to see this build come together.

Not to dash any dreams here...

But...  I believe those are slide-pads.. which I 'think' are some sort of flat resistor.  I think the X and Y axis are combined into one single value reading.  (similar to a drawing tablet)
Hacking these may not be easy, unless you have some sort of hardware encoder.  Not sure.

Also, even when using mini-pots, Im pretty sure that the travel is still the same as a large pot.  Meaning, you would still need to use gearing to have the correct resolution.

Making a Yoke full size is challenging enough... but making a mini yoke would be even more difficult.  It has to be durable enough to widthstand a slamming... but, smaller gears means smaller & weaker diameter drive tubes.

Also, with smaller gears, means smaller teeth... which means that tolerances have to be VERY tight.  If there is any loose play, a gear will slip and or chip/break.  A good example of this is actually the older Arkanoid spinners.  Almost all the used ones Ive seen are completely non-functional because of these very facts.  Wear and vibration causing play... and then gears getting all jacked up.  And an Arkanoid controller is fairly hard to jostle... vs... a Starwars yoke that gets Slammed around heavily and frequently.

Optical would be helpful with ultra high resolution encoders... IF... you could manage to have super precision in alignments, and IF you didnt have to worry about calibration.  However, optical isnt good, because of the calibration issues.

And finally, you run into playability & comfort issues.   The standard yokes handles are not actually that big... and fit the hands perfectly.  If you make the handles too small, trying to control the thing will be very hard and awkward.

I think anything less than 3/4 traditional size is too small for good playability, with almost any controller type.

Not to dash any dreams here...

Acknowledged and not dashed.  I've already thought about what to do if it has a PSP type flat resistor, let's just say that it may look like a yoke but won't move like a yoke.  Minor annoyance at most.  If its mini pots then I'll do my best but in the end it may end up like the aforementioned cop-out solution but Xiaou... I gotta try man.  We're not talking logic or feasibility, we're talking about adventure and a devil may care attitude towards vaulting ourselves into the unknown world of tiny ass playable arcade machines.  The controls aren't too small man, we're all too big.

Seriously, all good points and we'll just have to wait until I get the thing apart.  I hope I can surprise everybody but that isn't always the case.

I think I may be able to get something rolling for direct boot through GMenu2x, more to follow.

Bender, what method are you using to boot to Mame4all?

Right now I'm running gmenu2x and am able to bring up the game with two single button presses but haven't got the straight boot down yet.  I'm having trouble getting the rom to populate as an shortcut in the root application menu.  I keep following tutorials and copying code and it keeps not working.

Any advice is much appreciated.  Thanks.

Okay, got that little rascal booting to mame finally using the autorun

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/sd/mame4all_2.5
exec ./mame.gpe

but I'm still shooting for boot to game.

Just remember the words of Red Leader:  'Almost there................'

I prefer the words of Darth Vader: "I find your lack of faith disturbing"

Caanoo now boots to Star Wars directly.  Should also work identically on Wiz or even GP2X.  When you exit game Caanoo backs to the native rom select menu using whatever skin you have installed
This requires GMENU2X and MAME4All 2.5 please note that 2.6 will not work as the command line capability has been removed in 2.6 for some retarded reason.

This actually shouldn't require GMENU2X since all you are using is the autorun file that comes with it but rather than build your own I find it easier just to download and modify.  So modify the autorun code to look like this:

Code: [Select]
"Autorun"
#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/sd/mame4all_2.5
exec ./mame starwars

That's it.  Too easy.

Oh, and make sure you download Notepad++ or some other Unix code editor because regular notepad will add unreadable line endings to your code making it worthless in the Caanoo.

And now I'll start ripping apart, documenting, measuring, resizing art and all that.  Should I just rename this thread and request a move or start a proper Project Announce thread?

I think you'll get just as many page views either way, but I think it would be cool to have a separate thread for the canoo tear down.

Bender, if you want to go vert I think you'll have to go through GMenu2x because it is skinnable and you can compile your own if necessary though lord knows what a PITA that would be.  The only reason is that the console devs are notorious for completing a project and then abandoning to work on the next one.  If there is an outcry on the GP forums for vert support they'll add it on the next doodad to come out but the wiz and caanoo are pretty much screwed for a native rotation I think.  GMenu2x's coder frequents the GP forums so you should be able to track him down there or through his website and see if it's even possible.  Then you'd have to recompile mame4all so it doesn't back out to the native OS, although I think that's been done already, I saw a link for it but don't recall which version it was.  Best of luck on that grail man, I can only say that I'm glad Starwars isn't vert. I have a big enough chore ahead of me trying to get the controls to play nice.

Pulled apart the caanoo.

When you do so be really careful if you want to keep the shakers.  Vibrating feedback was not on my list of things I needed so I popped them off but they don't have disconnects so be aware.  The disassembly is pretty straight forward.  Four back panel screws and four board screws.  Take the back then the side ring then the front off.

In the second pick you can see the analog control, I'm in luck it is a pot type control so now I just need to figure out the Ohm rating for those two pots.  I am thinking it will be easier to just get pots rated the same and work with those than try to deconstruct the control body.  Any hints or help with the pot riddle would be much appreciated.

The monitor is able to be moved around to a 90 degree position for horizontal play while the board are verticle but it is a bit of a twist and I'm hoping it doesn't strain the monitor wiring too much.

The monitor is 3.125 inch on the diagonal which gives me a target of 1:6 for scale based on the original 19" Amplifone.  I've already got all the art downloaded so that reduction will be easy and just need to go start reducing measurements.  I'm thinking using .25" MDF unless anybody has something better to build with.

Found out that a lot of Caanoo users have to replace their analog joys with playstation ones when they bust.  I'll be getting two playstation controllers at gamestop this weekend to rip down so I can start experimenting with the mini yoke build.  Picked up the MDF and I'll be printing my templates out this weekend as I've got them all sized to scale.  I also did the art while I was at it to give me a bit of motivation.  Cab build should be pretty straight forward until I get to the bezel and yoke.  Those will take some finesse but I am off week after next so hopefully I'll put a dent in this project.

Super Cool!!! I kind of skimmed through the thread didn't see the dimensions?

It's 1:6 scale so it'll be 12" tall.  Scale is based off screen size.

Went out today and got a cheapo ps2 controller so I could raid the 10K pots out of it and once I desoldered them I had two thoughts.  The first was that I should have just ordered the pots off digikey and saved myself the soldering.  The second and more important thought was this:

Why don't I use two 10K Ohm wheel pots make the yoke?  Here's an example from Radio Shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3064080#).  If I make small metal brackets to hold each pot up the yoke "axles" then all I need to do is find a gear for each axle and I should get nice smooth control on a micro scale.

Does this sound feasible?  Can these wheel pots be used in this manner?  Any body got a lead on where I can get small plastic gears to try rigging this up?  I think this will be easier than trying to build directly into 10K post pots but I may still have to do that.

I predict that gear would last 0.75 uses.
Have you worked out dimensions for the yoke body yet?
If there is room, I would go for full size pots. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062354 (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062354)

If there is enough room, picture this......(cause I'm too lazy to draw & upload at the moment)

From the outside, the grips appear to be joined by a straight shaft.
But if you open it up, there is actually a horsehoe shape in the center.
The pot sits in the center of this horseshoe with the shaft extending into one side of the shaft that the grip is attached to.
(with a set screw to hold it in place)

The pot could just be mounted via in a tab sticking up from the bottom of the housing.
Mounting it by just sticking it through a hole and using the included nut would allow you to rotate it so you can make sure 5k is at center.

The "horseshoe" could also do double duty by hitting stops, limiting how far the grips can be rotated.

The other pot can be mounted inside the cab where there is plenty of room to work with.

Forgot to mention that you could hook a spring to the tip of this "horseshoe" as a way of keeping the controls centered at 5k.  :)

(I have way more ideas than I have time for.  As demonstrated by the half dozen unfinished projects in my basement at the moment.)

The durability concern is exactly why I ordered the exact linear pots your mentioned at the same time I ordered the wheel pots.  I also am going to experiment with drilling clean through the pot so I can thread an axle.  Doubt that will work for a variety of reasons but you never know.  I really want to the yoke to be to scale (1:6) but I might back it up to 1:4 to give me some more working room as I think that will still look okay on the scaled down cab.  Once all the pots arrive I'll take a trip to home depot for metal stock then start making examples.  Really wish I could find a one inch diameter lazy susan bearing, smallest I can source is 3" and that won't do.

I made my initial cuts today.  Next I'll be making a jig so I can route the bezel and the CP cut away and yoke port.  I need to cut a bunch of bracing pieces too once I decide how I want to do my joinery.  I am keeping a running cut list and can post at the end if there is interest.  Pots should be in by the end of the week so I'll be able to start messing with the yoke build next week.  In the mean time I'd like to get the coin door and shroud fabricated this week.

Anybody know where I can get or know how to make a ribbon cable extension?  It would save me a major headache.

Decided to try extending the post out the back end of a 10K Pot.  Used 1/8" square aluminum tubing for the key which fits snugly into 3/16" round aluminum tubing.  Drilled a hole in the back of the pot cover for the back post and it works great.

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Potdissassembled.jpg) (http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Axelpotbuild.jpg)
Left is the disassembled pot and the original milled post.  Right is the tubing stock that I used as an extension attached to the pot uh thing.

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/APreassembled.jpg) (http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Axlepot.jpg)
Left is the reassembled pot that I'm calling an Axel Pot.  Right is it hooked up to the caanoo for a test run.

This saves me from needing a lot of other loops and support and hardware in the yoke itself since I'm working on a 1/4 scale for that (rest of the build is 1/6 but the extra bit on the yoke adds a lot in playability).  My plan is to box that little unit up and have the yoke handles attach directly to the pot post.  I'll be doing some additional reinforcement though the middle as it's all tube stock.  I will likely try to run the wiring through the tubing as well though fishing it out mid-tube at that size should prove a challenge.

Problem:  Without gearing I have 300 degree of travel to make the full on screen range of motion.  My theory:  If I use a pot of a different value I can get full range of motion on screen without turning the pot a full 300 degrees.  I don't know if I should go down or up in value to get the effect I'm after tho.  I'm at 10K now, If I grab a 25K pot will I be moving 2.5 times faster or slower?  Does it work like that?  I'm thinking that a 50K would be ideal if it's faster because that should get me in the 60 degree neighborhood.  Any advice would appreciated.

<Edit:  Further research seems to point at using a higher value pot.  This is from shoddy sources however with no working examples given.  The principle seems to be that it takes 10K ohm to get the cross hair to the top of the screen, so the faster I can get to 10 the less deflection I get.  On a 50K pot I reach 10K at approx 60 degrees so this "should" work.  I'm totally shopping for other solutions tho, I saw that Happs is selling a 1K pot with 40 degrees of deflection for a paltry 30 bucks but they don't seem to have a 10K... and there is no way in hell I'm paying that much money for a pot.  If the 50K pot solution works I'll just add a limiting tab to the housing so it doesn't get past 60 and overload the board or something.>

<Update:  50K doesn't work, gives me a huge deadspot in the middle.  Restricts movement to the first 30 to 45 degrees of rotation and the last 30 to 45. Weird, would not have expected that.  Another possible solution is painting the blacked out traces with a conductive paint.  I'm going to try that but am still on the hunt for a 10K with 60 degrees of displacement.>

Fixed the deflection issue with the pots.  Now I have 10K Pots with 60 degrees travel corresponding to full on screen cursor travel vs 300 degrees of travel.  In other words, I don't have to worry about gears for the mini yoke.

Picked up this circuit writer pen at Radio Shack.  It's pricey at $19.99 but the cheapest pot I found with 60 degrees of travel was over $50 so I figured that I've whittled that down to $13 a pot.  Top is the adjusted resistance track and the bottom is the stock.  Just colored in the track to shrink the resistance area.  Already tested it out on the caanoo and it works great.

Also I've primered and painted (first coat) the panels and will begin assembly later today.  I already routed the bezel and will be constructing the shroud later today as well.  Pics to follow.  Hopefully I'll have a working mini-yoke by weeks end.  Feel a lot better now that I've got the pots under control as that was pretty much the deal breaker for this build.

Bender, thanks man, that was a huge concern but once I got that licked I feel like this thing is taking off with jet packs.  It'll slow down again once I start fabricating the yoke but for now I'm trucking right along.

Got the shroud knocked out tonight and the cab partially assembled so I can start test fitting things.  Last thing I did tonight was slather the shroud with joint compound so I can sand and primer in the morning.  I have one panel to recut as it's a bit short and I think I'll split my overlong back panel into to pieces so the admin area is fixed.  Then I'll wire up the rest of the caanoo switches while I patiently wait by the mailbox for my bearing for the yoke to arrive.

So this is where we're at so far.  As you can see I'm no where near some of the 1:8 scale cabs out there but I think I'll take the cake in the analog subcategory that I just invented just now this second right now.

The shroud is not an exact copy of the original because I decided to go with a square monitor opening based on how I'm flush mounting the screen.  Also reproducing the shroud is a bit tricky, even though I had one on the table to reference so I took some artistic license in a few details.  I am pleased with how it's coming out.

I had a lot of fun making it, more than I thought I would, and only hope that the yoke is also as enjoyable to fabricate.  We'll see.

This looks cool!  Really looking forward to seeing the finished product.  :applaud:

I also had fun making the shroud on my Star Wars project. In fact the shroud alone took about a week in total to make, what with doing a couple hours each night after work etc. But it's the little details like this that make the finished project stand out from the crowd. When it's all painted up yours will look great I'm sure. (Looks great already in fact)

LeedsFan, I'm kinda taking your SW build and Bender's Micro DK and trying to slam them together, yours is a huge inspiration.  I have some time off this week and I probably spent a good 6 hours on the shroud as it's pictured, little angles can kick one's ass.

Generic Eric,

Paint has been going on in multiple coats and all is left to cure overnight.  I'll do a rough assembly tomorrow night for final test fit with the Caanoo installed.  I have a few loose ends to tie up before I get to work on the yoke, which I anticipate taking a good while.  I've already conquered some pretty big hurdles and an 95% certain that I have autocentering licked but will have to wait until I'm prototyping to check playability.  I suspect some redesigns of the yoke handles will be reguired for thumb and finger play.

I've soldered, tested and hot-glued the wires for the analog control, the coin, and one button.  I have a second button, the exit, and the power left to solder, test, and glue tomorrow.

Coin door totally kicked my tail on the first go, I've sent out feelers to cheat and pay to have one made but I'm going to get some better material and try again.  I tried bass wood and sculpy first but will probably go get some hard wood and a mechanical pencil and start dremeling away.  We'll see.  I've contemplated just printing it but everybody makine 1:8 scale did a real coin door so I don't wanna ---smurfette--- out and fake the funk.

Have the LED bar all ready to go in the marquee area but am having a hard time figuring out where on the caanoo board I can hook up for power.  I need 3 to 5vs.  Nothing seems to be that well labeled.  I'm sure an answer will present itself.

Caanoo is charging so I had a few minutes to install the speaker grill and get some shots now that the paint is done.  I went with a semi-gloss this time, gives it some nice shine I think.

Thanks guys, I only went up to 400 grit between coats this time because I'm covering almost everything in vinyl anyway but it glossed up really smoothly, there are a few really minor pits where some orange peel didn't settle but I'm pleased.  The shroud really turned out well, I wish I had a metal lathe so I could just machine it all.  My father in law has all that stuff but lives 15 hours away and doesn't even have email so for now I'll keep carving until I can get my own or drag him kicking and screaming into this century.

This evening I got the power for the marquee sorted (didn't know you could just turn on the USB power in the caanoo settings... felt like a dummy) but fried the marquee board with some errant solder.  That's okay I have a better one coming in from amazon for under $3 with free shipping so I'm not heart broken.  Rest of the wiring is soldered, tested, and glued.  The board looks like a damn rat's nest for now.  I need to make a board support similar to what Bender has on his micro DK but will need to wait until I fit the pots and yoke hardware in.  I will start tackling the coin door again tomorrow and will see if I can't get some better results this time. Other than that I'm at a standstill until my Amazon goodies start to flow in.

Looking good!  The side profile shot looks really good. Gonna be really interesting to see how the yoke looks and plays.

Regarding the speaker panel, is that just a piece of sheet metal with the holes in it you can buy from a DIY store? On mine I was concerned that the holes may look too big for the cabinet size (and yours is way smaller) so in the end I used a solder board. One of those little boards you put electronic components in. I just turned it backwards and sprayed it.

Yours looks pretty neat as it is, I'm not saying you should change it. I only mention this as an idea in case you wanted smaller holes.

That's a really good idea using the component board, I'll take a look next time I drop into radio shack and may switch it out.  What you're seeing is an old speaker cover I salvaged off a rotting Atari shell.  I cut it down to size an ground the front edge to bevel it in.

Thanks man, I got some more done today as far as odds and ends and some art.  Will figure out a good coin door this week while the cave dwellers in the Amazon sweatshop warehouses find my stuff and box it up for me.

Whats next? good question.

I've got a full size SW build laid on this summer so after this mini I'll be slowly harvesting more parts.  As far as minis go I want to do one more Caanoo hack but translate the analog inputs into rotary inputs so I can make a 1:6 Tron or DOT (if I'm feeling really froggy).  The Caanoo barely has enough inputs to cover the bases of a DOT though... will take some creative rewriting of the Mame4all controller config to get that working right.  Plus I get to build a 1:6 scale push pull spinner.  I see epic fail written all over that one.   ;D

Coindoors in miniature are probably the worst projects evar.  I have created the 90% solution after several tries but will probably make another one at a later date to improve on what I've learned thus far.

Tried some different materials

Maybe I'm being too nit-picky but I really wanted to get the coin door looking like it was a real one put under a shrink ray.  If anyone has a shrink ray please PM me.

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Coindoor2.jpg) (http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Coindoor3.jpg) (http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/Coindoor1.jpg)

Here are some of my tries, I ended up using a jeweler's saw to carve out the negative spaces by hand (hence the curvy ass lines) and decided to put the coin and exit buttons where the coin returns were since I didn't want to mess with the coin receives as I actually liked how those look as is.  When I remake this PITA I'll be able to clean up those scuff marks around the coin and exit buttons as well.  Other than that it's not that bad but I still see this a pretty much a rough draft.

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/ArtApplied2.jpg) (http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr155/vonjett/Star%20Wars%20Mini%20Build/ArtApplied1.jpg)

And here's the cab with the art applied save the control panel.  That'll be next.  Coin door isn't wired in this pic but just taped on so we can see it on the cab.  Again, I think it came out pretty well, I just am pretty sure that I can do better if I decide I have another several hours to dedicate to the coin door.  Next up is the lighting, which should arrive shortly.  Amazon sent me the wrong diameter tube so I have to scare up some .375" OD tubing to get the yoke up and running.  Overall though I think it's starting to come together nicely.

Thanks guys,  , it's nice to get some art on the sides, makes you feel like you've accomplished something when in fact...

I drilled and countersunk the yoke supports into the shroud and fab'd up a support plate out of some steel bar stock I had laying about.  Attaced the flangette bearing that will assist the yoke X axis axle and did a test fitting.

The caanoo main board is in the way.  Damn display ribbon cable is too short to give me the space for using a bearing and then a pot.  If I just use the pot as the X axle there is room but that creates a wire management issue and eliminates any possibility of autocentering.  Pretty much that option is a non starter for now so I'll be solving the quandry of how to extend the ribbon cable on the caanoo.  It'll likely be a while before I am able to move forward but I'll keep plugging away.

edit:  Basic theory is that I can put two 30 wire flat flexible cables in one 60 pin zif connector side by side then split the stock 60 wire FFC into two cables and put the extensions and the stock ends into one zif connector each for the splice.  Issue, digikey doesn't sell a 60 wire FCC so I'm going to try two 30s.  Now I just need to figure out if the pitch is .5mm or smaller.  I think it's .5 because the cable is 31 or 33mm wide.  Time to order more stuff - harumph

The coin door looks fine.... I bet it took ages to make! I wasn't too sure how exactly you were going to make the coin door but of course now we can all see. What are the dimensions of the door? It looks really small on your fingers there. If it really is as small as I think it might be then you can ignore my suggestion below as it might not be practical.....

I do have an idea to make the same coin door if I was gonna do the same thing. I'd take some 2mm aluminium sheet and drill holes where the curved indents are. Then I'd cut out the straight parts and file smooth. Time consuming yeah. Then stick that when it's finished onto a flat piece of 1mm perspex. Spray black and then add the fake hinges.

It's just an idea I thought of. I've tried carving stuff before and to be honest I'm really bad at it. I like to put smaller pieces together to make up a larger piece.

Gotta say that artwork looks really good. Especially the sideart!  :applaud:

This is gonna be one unique little cab when it's done.   :D

Thats more or less how I created my last batch of mini coin doors. Basically I got a 1 mm thick sheet of flat smooth plastic and cut the pattern out of it. Then added the other bits on top.  You get a very smooth sharp finish without the woodgrain or rough crooked edges you get from using wood.  Once I was happy with it I then made a mould using silicone moulding material.

Technically you can also use the moulding clay to make the coin door mould , but you need to have an artists touch for that.

What about an engraver for the straight edges, can you run use one with a ruler?.
Or you can get those mini dremel routers, I have not used either personally but keep lusting after the dremel.
Looking excellent by the way.

I would have layered 2 sheets is styrene to make the coin door
Styrene is nice you can cut it with an xacto knife then sand it
Looks pretty sweet they way you did it though
What kind of buttons did you use there?

Kind words everyone
I really appreciate it and will definitely get back on the horse and give this another shot.

I have about 4 hours in this latest version. The coin door is roughly 88mm by 30mm, which is fairly close to the 1:6 scale I'm working with.  I could simplify the design a bit and get rid of most of my problem but I think this style of door is so much more visually interesting.

Your idea is pretty much right on the money, I'm going to hand cut it out of aluminum but pre-drill all the corners like you said so they're uniform.  Then it shouldn't be too much to just stay on line with the jeweler's saw.  Once I get it all sanded up I'll probably mount on Aluminum also with some JB weld and may even bevel the edges with the sculpy again, just more better this time.  As for the coin drops I'll try to do those out of metal as well and cut in the slot and area for the insert.  I don't think I'll get so far as to light them but who knows, I'll shoot for the moon and try to hit not half bad.

I took a molding (one thing I actually know how to do) but it's garbage in garbage out right now.  I can make exact copies of my current crappy coin door.  :banghead:  I know it's not awful but I think my next try will be a marked improvement.

You need a milling machine.  I'm sure you could make some really kick ass mini coin doors on it.

Brother don't I know it.  I would be milling all my own mini yoke pieces as well, and the shroud and... well the whole thing would be aluminum.   ;D

Looking excellent by the way.

I have the dremel router attachment but was getting a chewy line for some reason, I think a lot of it has to do with the scale and material, once I got to a larger scale everything smooths out.

The buttons were a $3 radio shack find, tucked away in the momentary pb drawer.  They come in a two pack of one red and one black so that worked out really well for me.  I haven't wired them up yet for testing but they seem nice and springy so they should work really well for this application.

Amazing work dude!  :applaud:

Already been cruising ebay for a 1:6 character to play the cab when I'm not   ;)
Just can't decide who should be at the helm, Luke is a natural choice but there is irony in having Vader or a Tie Pilot rocking the controls as well. ;D

I have successfully extended the Caanoo's FFC display cable 4 inches.  I really couldn't believe this worked since I kinda botched some of the ends but it's working flawlessly.  I was totally terrified when I turned it on to test and I had black screen... then I realized that the battery had gone dead.  It's on the charge now and I have good picture.

How it's done:

As stated earlier Digikey doesn't have a 60 wire FFC available so I ordered:

2x HFF-30U-04-ND (30 position, .5mm pitch, 4" FFC)
1x 609-3439-1-ND (Connector FPC/FCC 60 position, .5mm pitch)

Why Digikey carries a 60 wire connector but not a 60 wire cable is beyond me but I'm thankful they do.  Anyway, on the FFC extensions I had to shave some excess off the two inside edge of the cables to account for the difference in the interwire gap and the terminal end.  I didn't do this all along the cable but just for a cm or so on each end so I could get them side by side in the connector.  I also had to strip the rigid tape off the connection end from the original monitor cable and the splice end of each extension.  This is because the connector used for the splice is a board connector meant to only house one cable.  Then I lined up the cables and   fit all three (two extensions side by side both facing the original) into the connector to secure my splice. In removing the rigid backing from the original and one extension I chewed the corner a bit when I was pulling off the last bit.  Luckily those wires are all fused at the monitor so it didn't affect the outcome.

This is by far one of the more stressful little hacks I've done but it isn't overly complicated.  I'm just amazed it worked on my first try... and thrilled I didn't brick my caanoo or anything.   ;D

Total cost of this mod is $15 with shipping.

Brother don't I know it.  I would be milling all my own mini yoke pieces as well, and the shroud and... well the whole thing would be aluminum.

You say that as though it's a bad thing.  Aluminum anodizes to a nice black so well...

And how much fun is it to machine aluminum?

Thanks, I was pretty proud of it myself

I remade the coin door because I'm a glutten for punishment.  Did it out of 20g aluminum and the coin drops are 1/8" steel bar stock.  Those were a ---smurfette--- to shape but they came out well.  I wired up two red LEDs to shine though the coin drops and am contemplating translucent materials to use to fill the hole rather than leaving it with just the LED.  I am thinking hot glue would be easiest as I really don't want to cut a peice of plexi to a 2mm by 3mm square and frost it.  I also finally got he marquee lights tested.

Coin door is drying now but I hope to have it completed tomorrow.  This weekend if all goes well and my .315" OD pipe arrives I'll finally start making some progress on the yoke.

I've got one of these just laying around waiting for me to make some chips.

Coin door has done been redid. Results are vastly improved.  I used a paint that had a bit more gloss than I wanted but I got a nice orange peel out of it.  I think it'll settle out in the next 24 hours tho, the paint isn't tacky but it isn't 100% cured either.  Couldn't resist hooking stuff up tho.  FWIW the hotglue as a custom shaped LED diffuser worked really well I think.  My pipe came in too so I get to start tinkering on the yoke finally  ;D

Now I just need to make some ridiculously small vinyl 25c overlays for the coin drops... maybe Pongo can help.

Dandare and 05SRT4, , thanks guys, just trying to make this thing happen  ;D

I need some recommendations of how to fabricate the handles for the yoke.  I haven't done a prototype of those yet and I would like to get some ideas before I proceed.  I've been thinking about just doing it out of aluminum but I want to hear other suggestions first in case there is a better way lurking out there beyond my imagination.  I'll go through some pics on where I am with yoke construction thus far.

Got the axle pot onto the main axle and used that as a starting place to determine scale for the yoke.  Ended up needing 1:4 scale so the yoke will be a bit oversized but it's a difference of just under a cm overall so it shouldn't be too noticeable.

Prototype yoke housing, figured out that the pot that goes in the yoke is too large.

Diet yoke is above.  I shaved a cm from it in total.  At this scale I'm working in mm so it's a huge difference.

Working on the current yoke housing

Current yoke housing complete, ready to install inner pot and drill for the pot axle.

This is a as far as I've gotten, pot installed and tested (not secured yet)

This is with the side off so you can see the inner workings and how close the fit is on the diet pot.

This is the trigger mech I'll be using.  You can see the scale, it's actually closer to a 1:8 scale but it'll work fine.  Just need to figure out how I want to fab up the handles.

Thanks for looking and for the ideas guys.

needs more duct tape.

are you testing the pots as you're assembling this?  It'd really suck to get it all together and then find a bad pot.

I'd mill the handles out of aluminum and have a recess in them for the switch.  It'd still be pretty tricky to do though.  Perhaps just using a drill and some files might work.

You should mass produce those and sell them. miniram-controls......something like that

Miniram-controls...worst idea evar :lol

Pots are all tested and working thus far.  I've got some spares so if one takes a crap I'll be able to switch out.  I'm leaning towards making the handles from some 1mm sheet stock and doing a fold up, then covering with sculpy and giving it a quick bake to get those nice rounded corners.  Either that or doing it out of wax and trying a lost wax casting, but it'll be really tough to get the triggermech and wiring channels correct that way.

Title: Re: Mini Star Wars Caanoo Hack - 05 APR 2012, Yoke Construction Update
Post by: Le Chuck on April 20, 2012, 11:16:11 pm
I had to take a knee and face out for 10 days or so as far as construction progress goes because I was nearing the end of the semester and had a lot of meaningless unimportant papers to turn in so I can graduate this summer.  All I have left now is finals so plenty of time to work on the project.  By the way, I'm totally calling this Micro Star Wars now instead of Mini.  After working on this yoke and discovering I'd rather be rubbing my face against the the pavement I feel that mini doesn't do the scale justice but nano would make me seem melodramatic.  Micro it is.

Updates:

Yoke construction was an absolute ---smurfette--- and is ongoing.  Due to the gauge of wire vs diameter of available tubing combined with length of X axis axle needed to fit everything and still have it turn freely with wires hanging the sides of it I had to assemble onto the cab.  Still I am thrilled with how it is coming out.  Let's look at some pics.

These are the handles I ended up making, they are compressed tubing with the butts filled in with sculpy and baked.  The switch will feed in through the top and then be caped off with some two part air cure modeling compound.  The last bit of touch up painting will have to be done on the cab so I will have to do a good tape job when the time comes.

This is how the Y axis axel, pot, and trigger wiring looks out of the yoke.  The green and blue cables and to be removed and threaded once installed so I could get the X axis axle onto the Y.  Confused?  So am I.

I stopped in the middle of wiring to get a quick pic.  This took me a surprisingly long time to get everything threaded.

Here's one handle and trigger installed waiting to be puttied.  The yoke body also needs another sanding to clean up glue marks and will catch a fresh coat of paint with the handles.

I've got the marquee light bar, speakers, and coin door installed and ready to wire onto the main board.  The X axle needs to have the X pot attached at the end and I need to fabricate a bracket to attach to the collar bolts to keep the pot body from turning.  That should be fairly simple tho.  I did test fit the monitor and board, everything will go in well and the board will be against the left hand side of the cab with the battery on the floor.

So this is where I am so far.  The other trigger switch seems to have up and walked the ---fudgesicle--- away so I'll be dropping by RS to pick up another.  Still a lot to do but starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Wow, thanks for the awesome response.  Can't wait to see how it rolls in once I have a working cab ;D

I picked up the last of the materials I *should* need to finish off so now it's just a matter of sitting down and powering through.  It'll still be a bit as I have a few other eggs in the air but I am motivated to get this working so I can determine whether I've created a monster or or a very nice hard to play model.  I'm hoping for monster as it would be a let down to do all this work and have something that just doesn't game well. We'll all find out together.

Price... well there is a big disparity in parts cost vs time, I'm working at over 20 hours on the yoke alone (that's on the current version).  All together I'll have maybe $200 in it once complete (and that includes some mess up costs) but considering it is such an endeavor to make I wouldn't want to part with it any time soon.  Make me a four figure offer and we'll talk or just build your own... it's all documented here  ;D ;D

Vigo & Ark, muchas gracias

Darth, I'm moving into your basement.  I'll be modding one of your R2 units so it'll do 85 down the interstate.

I'm doing something wrong.  It is really frustrating.  I tested the pot before I put it in.  Tested once the wires were ran, sealed the sides, got the switches installed, tested switches and retested pot which low and behold quit working.  Tear everything down, find that pot is shorted at the leads.  Hmm, redo everything.  Extra careful, test multiple time... same result.  Why is this frustrating beyond the obvious?  Because it takes me over two hours to wire the yoke.  Small yoke, must use tweezers, lots of deep breathing.

So I think it's the hot glue I'm using to lock the pot into the yoke.  Dunno why but maybe hot glue and pots just don't mix.  Hot glue was getting on the base where the wires are.  Of course I've go hot glue all over my main board and that's fine.  Weird.  More testing is required.  I had high hopes of wiring everything up today.  Now I'm where I was Friday night.  I'll chip away, I'm sure it's something stupid like the yoke housing shorting it out because I didn't insulate well enough.

I'd be doing this  :banghead: if I wasn't curled under the kitchen table doing this

So close I can taste it.  Maybe red leader was right...

Thats nice... but one thing you should know is that all the arcade and even gaming sticks use some form of gearing.   Or, they have a very large throw range.   As such, the X & Y values might not be high enough to even calibrate your yoke properly.   Ive seen this problem on other similar designs, that didnt use gearing.

 Best of luck.

Xiaou, I already conquered the deflection issue (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=117874.msg1258526#msg1258526) over a month ago.  It was easy, I used  a circuit writer and put new stops in the pots so now I have 10K pots with full throw over 60 degrees of deflection.  Thanks for stopping by and proffering your unending support tho  ;D

Did that trigger switch really come from radio shack?

Yes indeed, part #275-0008 (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3190382)

Wow this is crazy. Nice work

Don't think I'll be joining you on this size cabinet.
Had enough fun cramming everything into the bartop. :D

Yeah I thought the same thing when I saw bender's mini DK... then it started calling to me.  This scale is crazy fun... frustrating and occasionally gives me suicidal impulses, but fun none the less.

Scaled up, that's like using 1/0 gage wire in a full size cab.   >:D  I demand authenticity!

You know, it probably would have been easier to build a shrink ray while waiting for your order from Ram Controls and then just proceed with the shrinking.

Yak, you hit the nail on the head.  I am spending all my time fighting 22g and 26g wire.  It's just too cramped and it's overkill.  I went and got an enamel coated wire multi-spool that has some 40g in it.  I'll be experimenting with that stuff tonight.  I'll report back but hopefully that should make my life somewhat easier.  I guarantee I could conquer particle physics and weaponize it before Ram controls delivered tho... just sayin.

OCD update.  I think I have the issue with the pot going out fixt.  The X axis axle wire portholes were not large enough causing everything to scrape pretty much no matter how gently I threaded it, which means after a few twists they were shorting.  I bored it out and sanded it down so everything slides nicely and the Y pot is currently installed and working.  Tomorrow I will slather some liquid tape in there to ensure it doesn't open up on me anytime soon and try to get the yoke up and running 100%.  I did get the enamel wire working but I don't like it because I can't tell immediately if I burnt off enough of the gunk on it to make a good connection so I'll stick with regular wire for now.  Making some space helped immensely.

I'm up and running.  Please check out first post for pics.  Video to come in the days ahead.  I learned so much on this build, most recently as tonight that I totally bite at Star Wars  ;D

I couldn't be happier that this little rascal is about wrapped up.  My one niggling issue:  Significant light leaks around the marquee as I haven't constructed the marquee retainer brackets yet.  Just didn't have the oomphf left in me to cut out the metal strips once I finally got everything working and installed tonight.

Playability on this scale is good, not amazing but much better than many anticipated.  Thanks for all the encouragement along the way guys, it is much appreciated

Is it any fun to play?  I guess you pinch one side to drive and use the other index finger to fire?  Can you fire with decent speed or repeatability?  Even if it's just a curiosity it's still very well done.

Wow, lots of great response already.  I'm humbled.  Thanks!

Video will be forthcoming, I was going to try and keep up with the switchcade, drventure juke, and mission control type of presentation but I have zero experience with that sort of thing so I'll just try and get something up that shows the cab in action, which is what we want to see really anyway.

TJC - I use a three finger grip, thumb and middle controlling pitch and index on the trigger.  I think it plays really well.  The pots have a little bit of dead space right through the middle of the throw but nothing that's going to make a difference, I get full range of onscreen movement.  It is a curiosity but I think it's a very playable curiosity.  I'll let you guys judge that once I post.

Drnick - my skill is not that good, really.  My tenacity is how this thing got built.  I decided that I would and didn't stop until I did.  Tenacity can make up for a lot, that said I still had a few moments where I wanted to turn this cab into firewood.  Glad I didn't.

MameMaster, Sjaak, Santoro, Tully, P-chan, Seith, WSF  Thanks guys!

Yak,  I've got at least one more mini planned and then a 3/4 build for Christmas.  I'm brewing a full sized SW (I have all the exterior parts) but can't decided if I should do a ground up repro or a "tribute" cab with some twists.  I'll get to it eventually tho  ;)

 :laugh2: :laugh2:

I just ripped off drventure who was ripping of Pixelhugger.  The Star Wars add ins were mandatory for the theme so don't feel like you're trampling on my clearly stolen creativity  ;D

Oh, for those interested I made the crawl using the Star Wars Online Crawl Creator (http://www.starwars.com/play/online-activities/crawl-creator/) then used some third party screen recording software to rip it so I could drop it into the video.   >:D

Comments in no particular order:

"micro contians" in the crawl text sounds suspiciously similar to midi chlorians - you better watch that. . .

The music thing's no biggie, they don't seem to take offense but you'll possibly pick up more annoying advertising overlays.

On the full size SW- You've got to go big.  I know you can nail an authentic looking stock build with no trouble.  I need to see the full custom setup - upgraded artwork, menu with all the SW games, including getting that one dude to finish his Revenge vector game, force feedback massage yoke --the full monty.  After this that will be a walk in the park.

And last, your vid has removed all doubt - this is the minimum playable size.  In fact, It obviously it plays better than Switchcade with the flight stick installed.  Dibs on any spare yoke parts after your FS build.

Really good work, Bro.

I didn't notice that error, that's hilarious.  Some of the other ones were on purpose ie Motivationators but glad it had some comedic affect anyway.  I've emailed the guy at Urban Interactive like three times and haven't gotten a response, which sucks on several levels.  Mostly because I want him to release the full build on the FE he designed.  I'm just going to work with some other folks better at that stuff than me and reverse engineer it.  I'm sure with practice I'll get my scores up but I've found that watching a video of somebody suck at a game can be just as much fun as watching a master at work.

Very nice! :applaud:

That's because I do most of my problem solving while I'm doing other things, like homework, swinging the kids, or laying in bed.  When I go out to the shot I'm ready to make things. When it doesn't work I go do something else.  Either way it did come together pretty quick.

A few independent commissions, one marriage offer, no career work yet.  I need to contact Georgie and see if he needs a hand out on the ranch.

I just exceeded my 10g monthly download limit at photobucket, had to go upgrade to a pro account to keep from being blacked out.   :dizzy:

Switch the pictures over to the pic thread stickied at the top of the projects forum here.
We don't want them disappearing if the stormtroopers come for you.

I had 4 or 5 projects worth of pics on photobucket and slowly transferred them here during downtime at work.  >:D
It was a chore, but they're much safer now.  Nothing worse than an awesome project thread with dead pic links.

Legal counsel has instructed me not to sell the build nor to sell duplicate builds at this time due to active trademark and copyright issues but has assuaged my concerns of litigious action against my person as a result of this build and the video.  As always, anybody willing to build their own is more than welcome.  More to follow.

You're right,  I just don't want to accidentally cross that line from one off fan art into some independent commissions which will turn into a very modest page on Etsy or some ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- that finally gets me zapped by a property owner that wants his piece of the action.

In other news my views swelled to over 30K combined on youtube and it's getting some late mention in some art and design circles.  I updated the blog list in the first post.  I've been told that it's not viral until I clear a half mil hits and I don't think I'm in any danger of that  ;D

Turned out fantastic. Great job and well done. Thanks for the mention in the credits also.

I'm sure you will get quite a few requests from people to build them one, I still get emails every day from people asking me to make them a micro cab.  I made one batch in the beginning of 7 , which turned out well, but if your like me you will want to start new challenges and projects and making cabs for others soon becomes restrictive.   So I stopped making for others, now I just provide people with some instruction points on how to make one.  Warning though, once you start doing that, be prepared to answer a whole heap of questions. People will get stuck, fry components etc etc.  Then people start to get grumpy if you fall behind in responding to them.  It's all good of course , I actually like helping people out so I like doing that.  I also had the fear of getting sued over the artwork in particular, someone actually posted on one of my vid's that I could get sued for that reason, which was another reason to not make them for others anymore. Having said that, I doubt anyone would sue for copyright.

I'm sure Bender had the same experience with people asking questions and wanting him to build them one.

Le Chuck,
I am oh so new here and it is because I am a SW fan and because I saw your Micro. I know you know this but in one word AMAZING. Now the big Question do you commission these? I know you get asked that lots but this commission would not be for a personal tuck away have just for ones self use. When I saw the encasement for the micro bells went off in my head not only because it was SW but because of the wonderful black space that looks to be crying for what i can give it..Autographs! My daughter and I have been involved with SW for some time and we do it all for charity and many of the SW cast members and they always love to help us out. I am also involved/work with many other Sci-FI conventions (celebrity access) so if you have say star trek (will be working with George T in a few weeks) and others ideas from the movies those are great also.If you like message me and I would love to tell you more. Thanks for the wonderful work you do. I hope to hear from you. ;D

I had this talk with Steve Sansweet not to long ago and from what I remember add that you are in no way affiliated with Lucas arts and all rights are reserved, damn wish I could remember the all of it but I do know someone who can help and keep it quiet ask the Qs w/o causing a stir (insider to LA) But from what I have seen so long as you are not selling is mass quantities and G.L will most likely be impressed.

So I see you haven't done much with that Caanoo I sold you, so how about I buy it back?  You don't even need to take it out of that strange case you have, I'll take it as is.  Same price as before?

OK, I had to try.   :dunno

Seriously, it turned out awesome.  And thanks for the mention in the credits.

Hmmm, I knew I should have removed the, email me if you would like one message on some of my videos.

On a differnet note, you should consider monetizing your vid Lechuck, it's not massive money, but it will get you about $800 -$1000 per annum on the views your getting - enough to fund your next project  ;). You can choose what type of ads go on .

It's funny how most of my views are for the GBA cabs I made, doesn't seem to be any love for the micro mame4all cocktail and upright I built which are my best builds. Oh well, I guess the only reason the GBA cab vid got it's views was that it made it on engadget and all the other sites .  Just goes to show what a difference getting on those sites makes view wise.

I'm planning my next build which I have been saying for ages now, Ive got 2 more projects to build , both completely different , just need the motivation to start.

Yeah, doesn't look like I can monetize.  Apparently the video was claimed by whoever currently owns the copyright on the John Williams music. ---daisies---

Now nobody makes money off it except Google.  Google always wins

Saw u were online tonight, &, as I sometimes do when I see a member online, I checked your profile to see what u were doing & comment if interested (holy crap, I just realized what an arrogant jerk I am!, &, if anyone does it that way with me, I'll never get a message!). So I followed the links to your amazing micro Star Wars cab. By the times I'd quit oooing & ahhing u were back offline, but I still want to add my congrats & praise & general worship. I'm afraid I'd find that cab frustrating to play on, & it's not my kind of thing (but if I had one, u can bet I'd play the snot out of it), but I recognize greatness when I see it. Amazing. Inspiring. Keep doing such astounding work.

It's short for word to the mothership.  If you don't know what that signifies yer too young, kidz.  I disagree with reference to my word is my bond.  for a 39yo honk I have more than a passing familiarity with hip hop culture and I never heard that once.

10 posts is the threshold for "Full Member".

Accounts are auto-upgraded to "Jr. Member" and PMs are enabled when a mod approves their first post.

It doesn't really matter as this is a one off and the Le Chuck has not been on since April.  So my advice would be to start following the build to create your own.
