Out Run Restoration
This year I'm gonna do my Out Run cabinet. I've been looking over it quite closely, and there actually IS quite some issues with it. So this is the to-do list as of today:
- Clean the whole thing
- Repair plastic, monitor bezel (cigarette burns and small cracks)
- Repair plastic, control panel (cigarette burns and small cracks)
- New start-button (already ordered)
- New map-decal (already in my possession)
- New wheel sticker (already in my possession)
- Repair cabinet damages
- Repair one of the coin-mechs
Monitor cap-kit- New T-molding
- Lubricate moving parts
- Replace noisy fan
- New gas (and possibly brake) pedal
- New front- and sideart
- Possibly change the marquee art (it doesn't "pop" anymore)
- New rubber matting
- Add ("invisible") carrying handles on the top and bottom of the cab (It's HEAVY!)
- Add a switch inside coin door for disabling the shaker (it's noisy)
This means, the cab will be completely gutted. Fortunately I now have some experience with plastic repair (my XBOX-sign), and the plastic parts is not THAT damaged.
The good news is that everything works on it (except for one of the coin mechs) and the board looks nice and clean.
For the back corners (the damaged part of the cab, see pics) I think I'm gonna add corner protections like this to add some strength to it:

I do however have a few questions (there will be more):
1. The side panels are covered with some foil. This is of course damaged. Is it ok to rip this off and do a normal sand/fill/paint-job? Side panels are made of particle board.
2. Where can I get new rubber matting?
3. The cab stinks of cigarette smoke. Probably this will go away along with the sanding and painting, but if not, what can I do?
Anyway, here are some pics of it's condition:

So today I removed the old map decal. Using red spirit I was also able to remove the old glue remains. Overall I think my bezel looks good! Also compared to the ones on ebay right now (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251572573304 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251572573304) and http://www.ebay.com/itm/252040897082 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/252040897082)). But it will be repainted. I do however think I'm gonna leave the paint job to professionals this time.

Why would you repaint it? I think it looks clean as a whistle.
Nice work so far! Out Run is a favorite of mine!
As far as the smoke, that's a tough one as it's probably permeated through the wood. Sanding and repainting may cover this, but I would suggest repainting the inside as well as the outside, and anything else you can get away with painting. That should help MOST of it. Cigarette smoke is the worst. I am a collector of action figures and sometimes on a trade, or Ebay purchase I get a figure that smells like smoke.

So sorry the smoke bothers you, (Jenifer crushes out a lucky) ...Thing is that game grew up in the wild, and if you look closely at the bezel, you most likely find cigg burns from when the cool kids played it, And consequently the whole thing is permeated. Wipe the inside out with a bleach rag (or reducer, but wipe wet and chase with dry rag), As for the cab, good score, It will look awesome in any lineup. :applaud:

It's funny for as much I HATE cigarette smoke, I am an avid cigar smoker.......lol

I think Jennifer should quit smoking. It's not that hard. I quit for about 8 years ago after been smoking for 20 years. One day I just decided: That's it! No more! Now I'm a anti-smoking guy. They say it takes 7 years for the tar to get out of the lungs, so hopefully mine's good now.

If you don't have it already I can recommend the freeplay ROM hack (allows attract mode in freeplay). A great upgrade that I considered worth the cost by far.

Not much going on here. But the parts keeps coming in. I have received a cap-kit for the monitor and a new start-button. I will probably wash the monitor when the weather allows for it, so the cap-kit is gonna have to wait for after that.

I didn't realized John/Ian was selling pre-packaged branded cap kits.

Yes, they just started this about a month ago. In fact, you can get get 10% off an entire order at http://www.iankellogg.com (http://www.iankellogg.com) using coupon code "johnsarcade".
I'm not sure how long this promo will last but it's a decent discount if you buying enough stuff.
-
I don't need any cap kits right now (knock on wood), but I usually get them from Bob Roberts. Good to know, though.

The monitor is now washed and recapped. The inside of the cab is vacuumed (there was a LOT of cobweb).
Before removing the CRT (sorry bout that prison sweater):

I discovered a crack on one of the gears. I may replace that in the future.

Monitor before wash:

Since I was gonna recap the chassis I just separated the CRT from the chassis and washed the PCB separately.

The temperature outside was below zero, so I washed it in the shower

An after pic:

Drying outside in the sun. Note that I covered the anode. I don't want water inside there, and that area is clean anyway.

And I need a new gas pedal:

Some years ago I suddenly had a bad smell in my gaming room. After some investigation I realized that one of the cats had left a pile inside the Chase HQ cabinet. If I knew which one of them that was guilty I would have made sure it was less than nine lives left... :censored:
