Well its time to start writing up my progress on this project.
Everything documented here wouldn't be possible without this forum...I've never used many of the power tools i purchased and I'm the type of guy who will bleed when I pick up a power tool.
I started ordering parts months ago and now I'm waiting on the final two pieces (I hope)...
A wheel, yes I purchased one and not a pair by mistake and its on a slow boat from China...Thanks amazon
Side art - Phoenix Arcade just did a run and I got a set on order without the TM to be "correct" with the earliest Nintendo builds.
Buttons, coin mechs, bezel retainer, monitor upper & lower support, etc from Mike's Arcade...basically everything from his Nintendo catalog
Marquee, control panel overlay and Bezel as well from Mike's.
I was extremely happy to learn he did a run of DK control panels (after i ordered all the artwork) luckily he sells them with or without the artwork!
Got a repro coin door from The Arcade Shop.
And now it begins taking the Gaetan 1.1 plans to staples to print out at full size for tracing the sides onto some 1/2 in MDF.
-
Cutting out the MFD wasn't bad but, next time I'll probably use birch plywood.
Never used a router but time to learn...Used a bearing bit to make a copy of the first.
-
Opps....nothing a little bondo can't fix
-
Next up is the base...I used ChanceKJ's YouTube video for reference.
-
Using Gaetan's PDF's was a great start but I found his DWG file of more value when referencing specific measurements and digging deeper into the plans.
I used a free reader called DraftSight along with the classicarcadecabinets.com website and the ton of pictures out there to figure out what I'm doing.
The Classic Arcade Cabinets website is AWESOME, plans for a ton of cabs as well as helpful tips on using the DraftSight software.

Yesterday, I finished cutting all of the wood.
No pictures...just a bunch of rectangles.
Today was the tough day...routing.
The coin door was cut with a jig saw
The speaker panel wasn't as bad as i thought it would be but thanks to bondo it only took me three tries to get it right.
The monitor supports were cut from 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch birch ply
The bottom was cut from 3/4 inch birch ply
Everything else was from the left over 1/2 inch MDF
The hardest part was the support for the control panel/bezel.
I used 1/2 inch birch laminated together with 3/4 inch birch.
Let it sit over night then used a bearing bit to clean it up.
I'm actually quite surprised that I was able to route this piece...had to stare at it in my driveway for a long time before i figured out how to build a jig to route the control panel side at the funky angle.
-
Took the liberty of adding 3 button holes on the board that goes between the speaker panel and the coin door.
I'll be using black Nintendo buttons that will eventually be programed for something in mame...
The inside of the cabinet will be built to handle all original parts if I'm lucky enough to find them.
Even built a coin box out of 1/2 birch ply that i had left over...
-
That's it for today...
This week I will be taking the time to dry fit everything...keep my fingers crossed that I wont need to cut or route anything else.
After its dry fit, i will be painting and laminating...more pictures then but basically the inside will be laminated black and the outside will be laminated Radar Scope red.
For all the Nintendo freaks out there (I am one) 1/2 inch MDF + 1/32 on both sides will get me to the magic thickness these were originally.
White 9/16th inch flat T-molding and slot cutter arrived last week...I probably cut the slots before laminating.

Nice.

Hit a snag today that will delay the project by a week...After I posted yesterday, i refreshed my CL searches and this came up...
Mario Brothers
75 miles away but it was funny the reaction when he saw my car.
Similar to when i get our Christmas tree last year...your going to put this into a Porsche?
Yep...
Its not in great shape but something to dork with for a while
What do you think? Its all there but, I don't think its a Sanyo 20EZ in there.
The game sound is fine but, there is no background music...not sure if there ever was but I'll dig in this week and see whats up
Enjoy,
Ron

After cleaning it today, its not in that bad of shape.
Yep, its got the EZ with pac man burn in
marquee is cracked but not too noticable
missing side art, bezel, lower bezel retainer, & service switch.
needs:
new black cardboard
cp overlay
a few buttons
all easily fixed...not bad overall for 34 years old
probably going to move it inside and let the kids run it for a while before i work on the cabinet.
Ordered a high score save kit already
@Chance...its orange scrap from DKJ...What color buttons were in this? The interwebs pictures are all over the place

Ready to try laminating the inside of the cab
In theory, the painters tape will be cut away leaving fresh wood for junction points
Added a few alignment holes for the other side

Bit off more than I can chew tonight
Lessons learned:
When cutting laminate, put painters tape over the cut line and cut thru the middle...without, you can easily tear it.
I used heavy duty kitchen scissors.
Also, it's thin but still too thick to do complex cuts, I went back and took off the tape everywhere except where the blocking will be.
I don't know if the blocking will get a strong adhesion to the laminate so I am still going to try and trim
I have not glued yet so if anyone has experience on whether or not to trim the blocking areas let me know...I plan on glueing in the am
Thanks
Ron

So the tape was a good idea but had to cut with my router. Simply traced the blocking onto the laminate with pencil.
I wanted a bit of wiggle room so I used a 1/4 bit and routed thru my lines to give me 1/8 all the way around.
The tape aided in letting me pull off the laminate that wasn't needed then I cleaned up by 1/64 freehand with the router.
I see the value of a cnc setup now...wish I had access to one

Laminating is done and assembly begins
Pro tip...when laminating I found it easier to do the edges first then the tops...the edges come out much nicer

I cant believe how real life gets in the way.
The project is in boxes....never put it together.
We moved last year and I haven't found the time to get motivated.
This weekend I will get it unpacked just so I can try to motivate myself to get er done.
Cheers

Damn, that tape placement under the laminate for the blocking is brilliant! Definitely going to steal that one.
-
Curious what laminate you ended up using..
