Title: The ARK Project - Lost? Not yet!
Post by: somunny on February 03, 2008, 10:37:53 am
We have top men working on it right now...

Who?

Top... men.

Well, I've finally decided it's time to begin what I think will be my last cabinet.  I'm basing the design on The Ark of The Covenant (with some creative license  ;)).  This was the first Shetchup design I've attempted so my skills aren't quite up to snuff yet.

The dimensions aren't to scale yet and I think this design is too long and narrow but it's a start.  Here's a few other ideas I have sorted out now:

22" CRT monitor turned long ways for vertical games only
One stick (probably Mag Pluses) and three buttons for each player
Amber LED's tucked under the bottom to produce a glowing effect
Provision for two carrying poles, similar to what was used in the movie
Laminate the entire cabinet with Wilsonart gold Metalaminate

I have a sample on the way.  The stuff is expensive! $6.00 a square foot which puts a sheet at around $200.  :o  I estimate using two sheets so this will be the costliest single purchase for the project, by far.

The name is tentatively set as 'Raiders of the Lost Arcade'.  Not the most original name but I think it has a nice ring to it.

Wish me luck!  8)

Nice concept.  Have you seen the stuff in person yet?  Any idea if it will retain that shine with a little wear and tear?  Or if it's going to be a huge fingerprint magnet?

That's going to look sweet! :)  When do you start the build?  Do you have a computer already?

I haven't held it in my hands just yet.  Hopefully this coming week.  I'll post picks and results of the fingerprinting test then.  I may have to invest in a velvet rope and pole setup, too! There is also a brushed style available that I'm looking at.  It may cut down on the visible surface marks.

:o :o :o :o

That's going to look sweet! :)  When do you start the build?  Do you have a computer already?

Thanks, H!  As soon as I get the laminate sample and check it out, I'm going to start cutting the wood.  As far as the pc goes, I figured since I'm only going to be using it for vertical games, I might be able to get away with using a 900mHz Celeron I have laying around.

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this choice?

Dude!? All the design work has already been done for you!

Make it a cubit and a half wide and high, and two and a half cubits long. And of course the frame should be made from acacia wood. Additionally, you're the only one allowed to play games on it, and only once a year.    ;)

First game you play on it better be Indy Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Hehe...  I built four in 2007.  Two for myself and two for family members.

First game you play on it better be Indy Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Sadly, Temple of Doom, the only Indiana Jones inspired video game IIRC, is horizontal.   :(

The one thing that may hang me up here is the artwork.  I feel pretty confident in my Photoshop skills (as fledgling as they are) but I'm more of an image manipulator than anything else.  My freehand skills are pretty lame and I really want this one to be special.  I was actually thinking about comissioning a fan-artist to produce something.  This could get pricey, though...  I'll most likely put something together to see how it comes out.

Eeehr, maybe it's a stupid remark but since it's a cocktail, why don't you put an extra CP on the side so you can at least play horizontal games as well?  ??? You might even make it detachable.

That's a valid suggestion.   However, the reason I'm doing a vertical game only design is that I believe it allows me to make the cabinet as "Ark-ish" as possible.  I also have two other scratch built uprights with monitors oriented to favor horizontal games so I can get my fix there.  :)

Police Arcademy
Citizen Kade
Raiders of the Lost Arkade
It's a Wonderful Last Life
Lawrence of Arcadia
Arcadian Beauty
Arcadalypse Now
The Bridge Over River Kade
Arcadian History X
2001: A Space Invaders
Donnie Darcado
Kade Bill Vol 2
Cade Runner

ok now I'm getting silly...  ;D

$400 seems VERY expensive for laminate...  Hell, you could gild that thing in real gold leaf for that!  You might want to check this out...  http://www.gildedplanet.com/compoleaf.asp

The Samples of Doom...

So, the laminate samples arrived today from Wilsonart.  They're covered in a plastic, protective film, which is nice.  Both are 5" x 8", which is a pretty generous size considering what I've received in the past.  One is has a polished gold finish, the other is brushed.  This stuff is difficult to photograph so bear with.

Each style has several pros and cons as far as the project is concerned:

Polished:

Pros -

most closely resembles the finish of the screen used Ark
mirror-like finish is amazing
fingerprints don't show up as much as I would have thought

Cons -

mirror finish may reflect too much of the surroundings, thereby ruining the effect
fingerprints still show (see pro)
scratches are very noticeable

Brushed:

Pros:

No fingerprints
Scratches not as noticeable
Does not reflect

Cons:

Not even close to the movie Ark finish
Appears somewhat dull

This is going to be a hard decision.  The main factor worrying me is that the polished lam will reflect everthing in the room around it and turn it into a hodge-podge of colors (it's literally like having a golden mirror).  While the brushed sample appears dull (technically, I would call it satin) it also looks more "yellow-gold" in color due to it not reflecting anything around it.

The durability aspect doesn't really bother me as the stuff it pretty tough.  I scratched both samples with a screwdriver but I think they will do just fine under normal indoor conditions.  Just keep your zipper tucked in!

$400 seems VERY expensive for laminate...  Hell, you could gild that thing in real gold leaf for that!  You might want to check this out...  http://www.gildedplanet.com/compoleaf.asp

I knew it was expensive going in and I think the laminate will prove to be far more durable than the gilding.  I'll probably end-up having some parts gold electro-plated, though.

J/K  :D  I like it!  I'm actually surprised that nobody has thought of that before!

Not quite.

Like I said in my first post, I knew the name wasn't the most creative but I like it.  Hopefully Ray B. won't see this thread.  I'd hate to have to pay him royalties.  ;D

Everyone else, thanks for the kind words.  I'll be cutting some templates out this weekend.

Cool project, I'm a big Indy fan. :)

I'll throw my 2 cents in here as I work with laminates all the time including the metal ones.
I would go for the brushed one, for the reasons you have mentioned. Fingerprints on the polished one will drive you mad.

It will also be a miracle if you don't scratch a piece or 2 during the build.
They won't be noticeable on the brushed but will stick out like a whip-scar on the shiny stuff.

Also are you purchasing the laminate from a distributor? Home Depot, etc can have quite a mark-up on this stuff.

Post by: somunny on February 08, 2008, 06:44:02 pm
Knievel, the more I think about it the more I lean towards the brushed.  My original vision was based around the polished finish which is why changing now is such a difficult decision.  I'm still toying with the idea of using some of both finishes as they do compliment each other pretty well.

Also are you purchasing the laminate from a distributor? Home Depot, etc can have quite a mark-up on this stuff.

The price I was quoted was from a Wilsonart distributor.  There's one near me in Tempe, AZ.

Well, I've got the templates drawn up.  Just need to cut them out.  I usually end up doing all the real design work when I'm drawing the pieces on the wood so it takes awhile.  I'm trying to keep it simple enough while still conveying a the general shape of The Ark.  I started to add some fancier curves but decided against it.  I think in the end, a simple design will be better.

I also received the gold t-mold sample in the mail from tmolding.com.  It's a slightly different gold than the laminate but I think it will contrast nicely.  One interesting note;  I never knew this but gold t-mold is actually clear molding with gold tape over the visible surfaces.  Seems durable enough.  Go figure.   :dunno

I like this idea.      I'll see if I can capture and loop that sound effect.  I'm also planning on having an amber glow coming from the underside.  LED strips or a couple of "neon" speaker rings.  I haven't decided which yet.

EDIT:  I captured the humming sound from the Raiders dvd and turned it into a ten minute loop.  I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.  I'd put a smple up but I have no idea how to link to audio files.

The chrome t-moulding is the same as the gold in that its clear plastic with a chrome layer. I used the chrome on my last cab and it its plenty durable so you should be fine there.

I was thinking about what you said about only vertical games, so as not to detract from the original "ark-ness" of it...

Not sure if there would be a way to do this (space restrictions...complexity... etc), but if you could have the side tilt in and out, you may be able to incorporate horizontal games as well..

Of course its something that would have to come out real nice... you wouldn't want it to look crappy or be gimmicky... it would have to be flawless and flow with the whole thing.

Post by: Xiaou2 on February 14, 2008, 10:15:29 pm

You might want to experiment and try to use some sort of translucent airbrush paint over
the samples.  Maybe a yellow or orange.   That way it would look a bit more yellow, as well
as having a more solid color from all angles.  Ive never tried this before, but I suspect its
possible to do.

The design is decent.  But, you may wish to consider getting someone with a lathe to cut you
some nice round legs for it.   Also,  where are the Arks 'Carrying bars' ?  :)

Ive always loved the Jones series,  esp  TOD.  :)

I have considered adding legs, although I was thinking of using aluminum and having it anodized gold.  Funny you should mention the carrying bars as I have always though that they would be a cool addition.  I plan on adding cutouts for them once I have the templates finished.

I've always had a fondness for TOD, as well.  I think it gets a raw deal and is solidly my second favorite of the series.

Here's a pic of the wing piece drawn out and ready to be cut.

Normally, I don't use templates but I wanted the sides to be perfectly symmetrical, plus I'm doing most of the real design work as I'm drawing the templates out anyway.

In true Indy fashion, I'm making this up as I go...

Maybe you could use the metal, tie it to the flyback transformer on the monitor. If anyone touches it... ZAPP!! Just like in the Bible!
This would take care of the fingerprints too..

Hey there,
My first post in a project thread:)

Whats the dimension of the control panel and have you done a cad layout yet for the controls? I have quite a bit of design experience and have tracked down some high rez scans of some of the props used in indy, If you have a layout I'd love to throw my hat in to help with some design work (for free of course).

Well, after one failed attempt and a slight redesign, I have finally finished the templates.  :)  Here's pics of the end and side templates as well as the one for the "wings" which will serve as the sides for the control panels.

The smaller end piece has a hump on each edge around the midsection that will serve as the holder for the carrying poles.  I haven't drilled the holes yet.

(I posted this in the Artwork area too, but just in case you wanted it with your project thread)

Using the same/similar compass as uprightbass360, I was thinking of something maybe like this:

This would carry over the plane's path idea with the red lines, and if you added red buttons to this it would look SWEET. The joystick would be in the center of the compass. The country names give the red line an added effect of being the flight path, and you can change the country names to anything you wish.

Just to note, the background image was some stock image that is only 72dpi, so depending on the final size of the layout, I may need to use as alternate background image or re-create it completely.

As for the Raiders logo, I just created that from scratch using a free Raiders font found online. The "R" of that font isn't exact. Thus, if you have the actual Raiders (with gradient) in a high resolution format, let me know and I can replace it.

Let me know what you think, cheers!

I was finally able to start cutting out the cabinet pieces today.  Geez!  What a huge freakin' mess routering mdf makes.  Just oblierated into a fine powder.  It's everywhere!  Anyway, I got three of the four sides cut out before the sun started to set.  Still need to cut the last side and do a little clean up on them.  I should have the four sides cut out and test fit tomorrow.

Got the sides slotted and test fit today.  There's a host of minor problems so I'm considering re-cutting all the sides.  I'd rather spend $20 on a sheet of MDF than have an area I can't fix once it's laminated.  I'd be out $200 then.

Overall, I'm really digging the way it came out.

I ordered the laminate today and was happily surprised to learn that the brushed gold is about 30% cheaper than the polished version.  $4.16 per square foot.  I ordered two 4x10 sheets.  Total - $360.97.  Less than I was expecting but still  :o

ETA for the laminate is March 19th.

Wow!  $400 for the laminate is pretty serious stuff.  I have to say though that it will be well worth it when you are finished with what has the makings of an awesome and totally unique cab...  Besides, what's a couple of bucks over the long term enjoyment this will bring?

this is going to be brilliant (",)

quite a conundrum you have with choice of finish though.

oh, and when you're done be careful where you place it...

ooh, for the attract mode, you could just have it on full contrast, white. that would look pretty sweet in the dark, all the light blasting upwards (",)

would you believe i don't have a copy of raiders? fixing that today...

edit: bugger. its actually gone out of print! but the shops tell me its being re-released in may. hmmm, do i get one off ebay now, or wait and see if the new one has more features...

The new version does have an extra featurette or two.  The movies will also be available individually where before only the trilogy + bonus disc was for sale.  The current versions will be dropping in price (on ebay, at least) here pretty quick, I'd think.

As far as progress on the project is concerned...  Really more like a lack of progress, but no shortage of work to be sure.  I went ahead a re-cut all four sides today and am much happier with the result this time around.  Still not 100% perfect but 99% will have to do.  :)

Tomorrow, I'm going to cut the slots in the sides (accurately, this time ) and cut the wing pieces out so I can get the control panels going.  I'll post pics of that tomorrow.

If you like cereal, Kelogg's has an offer on specially marked boxes for the Raiders movie. Buy 1 specially marked box and get the movie for something like 12.99with special POP or free with something like 10-12 special POPs from marked Kellogg's boxes. Saw it at the grocery store yesterday.

I can understand you doing the panels again. I can see your putting a lot of work and moolah into this so you want it to be as perfect as possible, you will only regret it if you dont so respect to you  :applaud:

The dimensions aren't to scale yet and I think this design is too long and narrow but it's a start.
Dude!? All the design work has already been done for you!

Make it a cubit and a half wide and high, and two and a half cubits long. And of course the frame should be made from acacia wood. Additionally, you're the only one allowed to play games on it, and only once a year.    ;)

Haha - good one! I'm surprised no one else commented on that, maybe they don't get it?

I assumed it was info from the Bible, yes?  First and second statements I get.  The third, not so much.

Anyway, on with the update...

Picked up the two 4x10 sheets of brushed gold laminate from Wilsonart today.  80 square feet of golden goodness!  They rolled it up so it was easy to get home.

Now I'm Jonesing to get the pieces laminated!  ;) ;D  With it being Easter weekend, I'm not sure there will be much time for working in the backyard.

I've been toying with the idea of an Indiana Jones theme for my upright.  I'm a huge fan and with the new movie coming out it seems like good timing.  But after seeing your project I'm not so sure.  Mine might look kinda lame in comparison.  Very original idea! I'm anxious to see the laminate applied.

BTW - The History Channel is running a new documentary on the Ark.  It is a little slow at times but still interesting.

Well, contrary to my lamenting, I was able to find time to work on the Ark this weekend (thanks to my wife for running interference with the house guests  ;)).

Anyway, the dang laminate has curled up on me and, as you can see,  I had a heck of a time flattening it out for application.

With enough clamps and some strategically placed heavy objects, I was able to get it to lay flat and the wood and laminate were forever wed.  ;D  Beware, there is an inherent problem with trimming this stuff.  The "gold" is actual metal foil attached to the laminate material.  When the router comes into contact with the foil, it is turned into tiny metal bits.  These bits have a habit of making their way underneath the router and gouging up the plastic protective film.  In a few spots, the film has been scraped away completely.  I'll have to remove the film to see if there's any visible damage.  Once I notice this was happening, I took extra care and cleaned the router and wood surface often.  The problem was greatly reduced.

Here's the nearly completely trimmed piece:

Not very exciting with the film still on.  I won't be removing it until both sides have been laminated.

Looking good! I hope that you don't find any damage when you remove the film. You might want to try applying masking tape 6" - 8" inside of your cut line. A little extra protection couldn't hurt.

I am anxiously awaiting to see this thing come to life. Very unique design

That's a good idea.  I'll do that when I laminate the other side.  The good news is that I can almays make this first side the inside of the piece.

I appreciate the offer.  I see where you looped the "hum" of the Ark.  That should be really cool.  You could do something with the theme played when they show the Ark on screen (or talk about it as I recall) as well.  Not sure the name but they go back to it when Indy sees the drawing of the Ark in the Venetian underground in Crusade.

Your quote to kick off this thread is great by the way.

I would love to see what you have as your concept that you're working towards.

Thanks!  The only design I have is the pic in the very first post.  All the changes have been made on the fly.  I've done the same with my past projects.  I'll start with a basic design and then change it (a little or a lot) as I go along.

Hey, I just caught your thread in the Artwork section and perused on over.  First I think you've got a great cab going.  Great theme idea.    It looks like you're gonna have one kick-ass cab.  I also like your ideas for the one/two men buttions being written out in the same font as the other lettering.  Before I saw your latest post, though I had a thought that might work out pretty well.  Vector the Indy silhouette in your footer pict and see how that works for the labels.

The other thought that I had while looking in this thread, was about your laminate conundrum.  If you haven't ordered it yet, there is a trick that is used in the scenic art trades for the entertainment industry.  For a cheap gold leaf effect, use the gold "potato" foil that you can get in restaurant supply places.  Use the gold side out, tear off the edges and spray glue it down with something like 3M Super 77.  Burnish it down to create a very flat surface, then seal it with a few coats of clear lacquer.

You will be able to cover T-molding with it so that the panel looks like a solid piece.  The lacquer will protect well and is easy to repair.

Looking forward to seeing more as it progresses!

I managed to get one side piece completly laminated and trimmed over the weekend.  I have another piece laminated on one side waiting to be routered.  This process has been far more time consuming that I had anticipated.  I've used laminate on two other cabinets but the gold needs to be handled somewhat carefully so I'm taking it slow.

I still need to rout the t-mold slot on the laminated piece.  As soon as that is done I'll be able to remove the protective film and take some decent pics.

More progress, less pics...

I now have both of the longer side pieces completed.  Finished laminating and routing the t-mold slots this past weekend.  I also was able to get the wing pieces cut out using the template I made.

My focus now has to shift to getting the cp's put together.  I need to have them completed so I can determine the placement on the end pieces before they're laminated.  A couple of admin button holes and a hole for the control wires need to be cut out on the end pieces.  This is much easier to do when you're working with bare wood as opposed to laminated wood.

I also picked up a mobo/proc combo at Fry's last week for the Ark.  It's an Athlon X2 4200+ and an ECS GeForce 6100PM mobo.  Not exactly high performance but it will be more than enough to run what I need it to.  Both items set me back $59.  No too shabby.

Sorry for the lack of pics.  I'll take some this evening and get 'em posted.

Side 1 - This stuff is really difficult to photograph adequately.  In person, it shines very well, even through the plastic film.

Matching pair

The control panel wing pieces.  These are going to stick out too far, I think.  I plan to trim two inches off.

Found this in an email and thought of your project

Plans for the Ark of the Covenant
Exodus 25:1-22

The Ark of the Covenant

They shall make an ark of acacia wood; it shall be two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. You shall overlay it with pure gold, inside and outside you shall overlay it, and you shall make a molding of gold upon it all around. You shall cast four rings of gold for it and put them on its four feet, two rings on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side. You shall make poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, by which to carry the ark. The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. You shall put into the ark the covenant that I shall give you.

Then you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its width. You shall make two cherubim of gold; you shall make them of hammered work, at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other; of one piece with the mercy seat you shall make the cherubim at its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings. They shall face one to another; the faces of the cherubim shall be turned toward the mercy seat. You shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark; and in the ark you shall put the covenant that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the covenant, I will deliver to you all my commands for the Israelites.

Depends on your setup, for a white screen Designer White, and for a gray screen around the shade of a GrayHawk, Fashion Grey.  Both in the -60 matte finish... and much less expensive than the specialty laminate you're using.

Looking forward to your additions and to see this puppy when it's finished! :)

Which method you can't do with a U360 stick, due to the magnet on the bottom of the shaft. I'd like to see how you did the wire too. Can you show us some pics of that?
Title: Re: The ARK Project - Behold, the GOLD!
Post by: Franco B on May 19, 2008, 03:58:47 am
Yeah unfortunately I dont see how you can get round the rotation issue without pretty much re-designing the the stick.

All I did was to mill a 2mm wide slot into the e-clip groove:

The wires then fit into the gap between the ends of the e-clip. I used small gauge wire so that the wires fit snuggly and allows the magnet to fit all the way onto the shaft so it sits at stock height. Obviously brass isn't ferrous and hence inst magnetic so I machined the shafts so that the magnets are a push fit.

Obviously if the joysticks are twisted alot the wire(s) will break. I suppose you could fit some inline connectors that would disconnect before the wires break but you would still have to open the CP to reconnect them. If any one can think of a solution I would like to know  :)

You might want to read my post above.. Connecing the LED wires to a standard audio mini jack at the bottom of the shaft allows a miniplug connector to rotate freely - 360 degrees, as many times as someone thought it would be cool.. the wire will never break because it never gets any significant stress on it.. SlikStik was using this design for its lighted ball tops , so for all I know it may be patented, but it sure works nice.

The problem is the magnet and circuit board at the bottom of the stick.  What you are suggesting won't work because these components get in the way.

Looking Good sommuny.
Franco, your skills never cease to amaze.  Cool modification to the stick there.

Yes but Bender is working on a miniplug with the magnet attached to to back of the plug but. which solves the problem, but I have made on of these myself and I don't have room to install a restricter plate. I do like the feel of the circular restricter.

I imagine you will have to lower the PCB as the shaft/jack/magnet will be longer than the standard shaft/magnet?

I don't know exactly how the U360s work but you may have to compensate for the extra travel of the magnet due to the increased distance from the pivot.

Thanks for the update.  I can't help but think of seeing the finished project due to all of the marketing for the new movie.

I am working on this. This is not the final but you get the idea, You do have to increase the distance of the PCB to compensate for the mini plug, and with a small modification those SICK, SICKly awesome gold joysticks could be retrofited. The last thing I need for that project are custom shafts and actually I think Franco is going to save the day on that too!
Just Stunning, Stunning, work on those sticks Franco! :notworthy:

Nice work bender!

Does the U360 function the same with/without the restrictor plate? Im guessing it doesnt really matter how close the magnet is to the sensor then?

Where did you get your miniplugs from? I was looking for some a while ago but couldnt find anything suitable.

I was thinking if the magnet thing doesn't work out for you, you could use a regular shaft and put a brass sleeve on it instead of using the solid brass shaft.

You do have some play as to how far the magnet should be from the PCB, but in my final design the distance will be the same with or without the restrictor, and the same as the original

I got the mini plugs for a place called vetco (http://shop.vetcosurplus.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=72_74_90&products_id=6828) the harder part was finding the jack, I'm using  the tiny 2.5mm ones and I could only find either panel mount or PCB mount and they wouldn't fit into the shaft, so I bought some cables and took the jack side out of those. Some are better than others I was able to find one that had a 6mm(outside diameter) jack that works perfectly, unfortunatly it's from radio shack and discontinued. So long story short trying to find a small jack is the trick

Did you find any jacks that would fit in the shaft?

At around having the magnet an inch away from the pcb ( in center position ) it seems to lose tracking at the outside of its travel. We should be able to compensate for different distances by creating custom restrictor profiles.

I tested with a 3.5mm 2 conductor plug. A 90 deg plug of what looks to be aluminum. I nabbed it from my buddy's shop and I cant find anything like it on line.

He has a guitar repair and restoration shop and also does amp repair. I am going to look in his paper audio parts catalogs. They are half the size of a sears catalog and a lot of things in there I cant find on line.

Also I never got the test to fully work. I was testing the magnet mainly. I never drilled my shaft all the way end to end.

Did both panels need what looks to be Player 1 and 2 buttons? Normally most cocktails only have it on one side - or do you plan to do something different with the player 2 side?

Hmmm...

Well, I hope I haven't bunged this up but my intent was to have a player coin and a player start on each side.  Will that not work?  I'm thinking that player 2 can start his own game.  In hidsight, I suppose I didn't need a coin button on that side...  Oh well, it makes the cpo design easier.  ;)

You going to have admin buttons somewhere?

I'm planning to have an escape and pause on player one's side.  I'm going to mount them on the side of the cabinet facing the player, one on each side of the cp.  There's about two inches clearance on each side so the buttons will be mostly hidden from view and out of the way of accidental pressing.

The cp's really aren't much to look at yet and I can't finish the laminate until I have the overlays completed (working on finishing them up now).

Can't wait to see the final build!

That makes two of us!  ;)

If you want to plug the extra holes its easy enough to do (I had an extra three holes in my vertical CPs so I win that one!  :P  :)) I just used some high performance wood filler to plug the holes and then sanded them flush.

The 2 most used buttons on my cab are the credit button (gets presses a lot - and I mean a LOT).  Second is pause - cell rings and it sure is handy.  If you only have 2 buttons I might think about putting the esc button on a shifted key.  Just a thought ...

That's how I have it on the first machine I built.  I also have a dedicated esc key on the 3/4 scale machine I built for my son.  I think I like the dedicated key best.  The additional buttons won't be very noticeable where I'm planning to put them.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!  :)

Since there's a slot in the shaft, perhaps there could be a slot in the base around it and  then a small rod screwed in to lock it in. The wires can come out through the rod. Of course next time around, rounded and tapped slots might be optimal.

So, these control panel overlays are prtty close to final.  I haven't decided which way to go as far as the "button circles" go, but I'm leaning toward NO.  I'm also thinking about doing away with the P2 coin button and patching it up.  Opinions?

Player One, no circles.  I added the subtext to "player One" on a whim, but I like it.

Player Two, with circles.  I think it makes it a little too busy.

I felt that the map-based designs with the travel lines, airplanes and the like, were getting too complicated so I decided to go with a much more simple design.  It was a tough choice as I had already put in a ton of time in on those designs but, in the end, I think it was the right one.

I suppose we'll see once I get it all together...

Hi,

Cool project, can't wait to see it done.

As for the CP, maybe you could go without the button rings on the CPO (for ease of install), and kinda get the look by replacing the button housings/bezels with black housings, and have your translucent colored button plungers.  Sorta like the Wizard of Wor CP (pic attached).

The thing about "guide rings" on the CPO, is IMO they're kind of useless at the end of the day. Unless you cut out your button holes absolutely perfectly on the MDF, there's a high probability that the "guide rings" aren't even going to line up spot-on anyway. It's for this reason that I also advocate cutting plexiglass overlays using a flush-trim router bit rather than a circle saw-- it's better to assume that your button holes are slightly off and base everything on the holes in the wood, than it is to cut everything around the original exact plan.

Glad to see the train is rolling again.  Looking forward to the complete.

Love that print too...that would make an awesome background....very fitting

Whoa.  That print will really put this thing over the top.  Try scanning it as a true two colour b/w image.  Then you can take that and use a vector tracer or maybe by hand with the magic wand in Illustrator to get something you can scale for CP or blackline art.

That's exactly what I did today.  Here's portion of the image that I scanned to a 600dpi b&w pdf (would there be a better image format for something like this?).

Here's screen caps of the picture from the movie.  I remembered that the beams emitting from the ark were yellow but I didn't realize there was this much coloring done to the image.

I may try coloring it though, admittedly, this is not my strong suit.  If anyone thinks they'd like to have a go at giving the pic a screen accurate color job, let me know and I'll send you the full scan.

I've put quite a bit of work into my other cpo designs but I really think this is the image I need.

As you know I still have your U360's buddy. I will get them sent out to you soon. As your not in a rush for them I thought I would hold on to them to sort out this tangle free solution. Ive got all the hardware and I have come up with a solution. Im going to get a prototype made shortly and then ill make you a pair of brass shafts with the audio jacks in. Hope thats ok bud, sorry for hanging onto them for so long.

Just a bit of proof I am actually doing something!:

Really depends on your final objective... but I'd probably scan it higher than 600dpi.  That will make it easier for the vector generators or magic wand to get accurate straight lines with less oddness you have to clean up.

Looks pretty sweet.

You gotta set your screen saver to be that mass of swirling clouds with blue lightning underneath like the final scene in Raiders.  That would look awesome!

I'm restoring an Indiana Jones pinball machine right now in the "pinball" area of these boards.  Unfortunately the only thing that I can do to "ark" that out is to brass plate all of the metal.

Nice work.

"An army which carries the Ark before it...  is invincible."

Got a pm from Waveryder last week in which he expressed interest in adding color to the sketch/print of the Ark from Jones's big ol' school book.  Well, as you can see, he kicked some major ass on it.

The result speaks for itself but I have to give a big public 'Thank you!' to Waveryder.  He treated it as if he were putting it on his own cabinet and I couldn't ask for more than that.  Thanks again, man.

Next, I'll be incorporating the image into my cpo's (I'm on about the 4th or 5th iteration, I think).  This will be the final cpo re-design.  So as soon as I'm done, it's off to the printers.  Stay tuned...

I've had too many pressing houshold projects (outdoor & attic) that built up over the summer to do anything on the Ark.  Thankfully, there's a light at the end of the tunnel and it looks like this weekend I'll be able to finish up that crap so I get back to what's important!  ;)

I've made a small bit of progress.  I'll try and get a pic tomorrow.   I'll also work on getting the final cpo designs up.

Unfortunately, I had some problems with the laminate.  I'm going to need to pony up for two new sheets to the tune of about $350.  It's kinda taken the wind out of my sails.   :P

oh man I'm so sorry, that sucks!!

buck up though, a project of this magnitude is bound to have a couple setbacks
I'm working on a very small project and I can't believe how many set backs I've had
one cost me just about what that laminate cost you

when you feel up to it let us know what went wrong with the laminate, let me guess... it had something to do with bending it?  That stuff can be pretty tricky to work with
I remember on Mountain's first cab he had a laminate disaster too, but man did that thing turn out fantastic in the end!

keep at, I know I'm not the only one waiting to see some updates on this build

Ding, ding!  You're exactly right.  That suff has some memory and once it's been rolled, it's like working with spring steel.  The stuff will snap before it flattens.  Oh well, won't make that mistake again...

Anyway here's the cpo's.  My one question is;  should I go with the text for the Start and Coin buttons or leave it out.  I'm thinking that leaving it out will reduce the possibility of problems lining everthing up.  Opinions?

I'd leave it out.  If truly necessary, you could add some sort of vinyl label to the button itself.

yeah, the only way to even try to bend that stuff is with the thinner vertical kind and a lot of time with a heat gun. Trying to get the shape pretty close before you apply the contact cement and then still it's a crap shoot

Completely agree here as well.

The text below the buttons really doesn't add anything to the CPO.  If anything it takes away from the incredible design behind it.

I was able to make some progress today.  Got the other two "wing" pieces trimmed.  I have to laminate the inboard side of one more before I can start putting the second control panel together.  I attached one control panel to take some measurements and mocked up the progress so far.

I've had issues with laminate that has been rolled too long, too.  Big sheets are definitely troublesome.  I've found that some have so much spring that you pretty much have to waste as much as you use... when the contact cement is ready just slap a way oversized piece down, cut most of the excess, and then route the rest.  Costly but with some of the pieces I've done it was the only way.

What are you going to do on some of those inner corners where laminated edges are going to meet at 90 degrees?  I'm thinking where the decorated trim pieces meet.  There could end up being a slight gap there that most would not see but may bug you as the builder.

Well, I really appreciate the interest in the project and it has motivated me to get it back on track.  I finally had Scott at Mame Marquees print out the P1 and P2 overlays and I got my U360's in the mail with the polished brass shafts (also wired for lighting) from Franco B.  Major props to hime for the awesome job as well as Waveryder for the work he did coloring the McQuarrie Ark Bible sketch.

So here's the progress on the player one cp so far...

I added the t-nuts for the U360's

Bondo'd and sanded - I also ended up filling one of the admin button holes on the P2 cp

I haven't decided whether to use all translucent yellow buttons or a combination of yellow, orange, red.  I wish Happ made brown.  I'd like those for the admin buttons.  So there it is...

I forgot to mention, I found my old Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark hardback comic when I moved house, I didn't know if it would be useful to you if I scanned any of the pages?

That looked so cool I went ahead and picked one up on ebay!  Thanks again for the sticks Franco.  They really are beautiful!

Looks like you got brass plate on the inside areas of the cp? Are you planning on doing more of the cab like that or just those inside panels?

Either way, it's looking really good :applaud:

Thanks Dr.!

If you're referring to what I think you're referring to, the entire unit will be laminated in the same gold "Metalaminate".

What are you going to do on some of those inner corners where laminated edges are going to meet at 90 degrees?  I'm thinking where the decorated trim pieces meet.  There could end up being a slight gap there that most would not see but may bug you as the builder.

You may be right about this (the gap, that is.  You're definitely right that it will bother me if it's there.  :)).  I won't know for sure until I get the other two sides laminated.

Have you tried lighting the LEDs yet? I used clear bubble tops in the previous pics, I would like to see them with your yellow bubble tops. I bet they will cast a nice glow over your artwork :)

This project is fantastic and I want to see it finished. *nudge nudge*

On a clearly unrelated note, the Canadian mint misplaces about 15 million dollars of boullion just as somunny is covering his cocktail cabinet in gold. Sure, he says it's just metalaminate, but it looks a little too good if you ask me. Mere coincidence, or the perfect cover story...?

Well ... I guess it depends on if you were Jewish or not. Notice there are no German Nazi's in that photo, not guns & rocket launchers. It's swords, spears, and shields. Historically the Jewish Nation would take the Ark with them to battles and such (although they never pop-ed the top to destroy their enemies or anything). I'm Jewish myself, so I don't feel to bad for those guys ... But I don't know that I would call them "Bad Guys", unless you were a Jew yourself. (reading wayyy too much into this ...) All the same, love the artwork.

This is the first time I've come across this project, pretty incredible so far. Was it ever finished? I know how responsibilities of "real life" tend to put these sort of projects on hold (especially since i read earlier in the thread he dropped almost 300 on laminate he ended up spoiling and had to replace)  anyway, I just wanted to congratulate you on what you have shared this far.It looks amazing.

I'm sure the guy has been busy with life...these projects aren't streamlined productions, so there are delays. No need to stalk the dude.

If I was stalking him, I'd PM him a bunch of times, show up at his house, etc. etc.  Or send some Germans for the Ark.  I'm just interested, that's all.  Usually, when I check the threads with no replies after months, I find that the OP hasn't been around either.  In this case, I noted he'd been online recently, and thought it was odd that there wasn't an update to what is, in all respects, an epic build.  Even a 'life has been kicking my butt' is more than helpful.

 ;D

I also don't get why you're calling out people to finish their projects when you haven't even started yours...just saying.

Ouch, dude.  Harsh.

 ;)

If my Wife would let me start, I would start.  Right now, cash is tough, and other projects are on the go.  (I'd like at least ONE of my bathrooms to be 100% functional, personally.)  I can, of course, plan and ramp up, and my home PC is all ready to go...  So far.  There's always stuff to do.

 :D

Maybe he built this Ark a little too well, and when he opened it back up again to tinker with some wiring, it had turned into the real Ark of the Covenant and it melted his face off? That would be pretty embarassing and righteously awesome at the same time.

I think it's finally time to get this back on track.  Unfortunately, I'm going to have to re-cut the long sides and buy an additional 80 square feet of laminate to replace what was ruined.

My biggest hurdle this week will be getting the shed cleaned out and organised so I can get to work.

Was it special laminate or something?  Ive kept my home depot countertop laminate rolled for months and used it just fine.  It does stay curved, but the force of the contact cement is more then enough to hold it and keep it on and flat.

I have been selling people on the idea of building their own cabinet. When I try to explain that the cabinets can be whatever you want, I almost always bring up this project as an example. I hope it relaunches.

Maybe someone can make a terrible Crystal Skull themed cab to agitate the situation. It could be all "Labeouf'd" out.

I had completely given up on this project.  Hope to see it completed.

I think we may need to wait for Indiana Jones to unearth this one in the next movie.

Watching this topic on and off for literally years. Life is busy, i know,  but this concept is too awesome to let slip by the wayside. I'll continue to wait.

yeah, he's cutting the LONG sides and they are really really long. I'd expect it might take another 18-24 months.

I heard he got it almost done and the spirit of the almighty occupied the build making it impossible to touch.  An eviction notice was drawn up but no agency will serve against an "act of God".  On the bright side Somunny's army is now impervious to defeat.  On the down side the build isn't likely to be finished until another ark of sufficient class and style is presented for the host of hosts to move into.

Not trying to be mysterious, but you know how life can be.

I hope to have more free time starting this summer than I've had during the past couple of years.  One of my top priorities is to get the ark project rolling again.  I can't believe it's been five years since I started it.  Wow, what a slacker I am!  All the materials are sitting in my shed just waiting to be rediscovered...

And LeChuck...  I don't think I've ever done anything in the spirit of the almighty.

Heh, see I'm only 3rd slowest around here compared to you and PH.  Ahh just kidding and I do know how life can be.  This project inspired me when I was getting going on the Astro cab, and it still does.

My MVS-99-6 project was started around 3.5 years ago, what's my rank?  ;)

I'm glad to hear this project is still on. It was looking real good.
Life can be that way sometimes.

I know there are times when I'm full in and I frequent these forums everyday and them the next thing I know I'm so busy in other stuff that I'm out of here and the hobby for a few months

This was one of the original "original" ideas that inspired me in my project. It looks like 2013 is a year of returning projects! Happy to see you back, somunny!

Here's hoping the bumps will get him back at it!

Well look at that, it's been another year since the last post. At least I didn't miss much during my 6 year absence from the forum, this was one of the fun projects to follow back then and if it ever starts back up I can follow it again.

Has the ark fallen into the nazi's hands????

Not that it would have mattered. The Big Bang Theory has already proved that Indiana Jones involvement in the movie would have had absolutely no effect on the outcome.

I think we should all just let it die. And then be happy if it comes back. Or someone else make it.

I'm totally necro-bumping this thread--one to see if any more progress was made and 2 because I shamelessly stole all the artwork to build my own  ;D.  I'm going to go with a 2 player side by side setup since 90% of the games I play are horizontal 2 player games versus standard cocktail cabinet format.  I have a cocktail now and I find it really annoys me that its so nice vertically but terrible for horizontal games.

If Somunny sees this and wants to sell his progress (assuming he'd ship to canuckistan) then contact me!

Gauntlet *thrown*!

Give it a rest. After yearly bumps, it’s a pretty good chance this project is dead. Take the hint.

I build computers...   ;D
Hehe...  I built four in 2007.  Two for myself and two for family members.

Cool...  I built my first one about 1.5 years ago.  I'll never buy another store-built system.

I wonder if Haruman still feels this way. I built most of my systems from the mid 90's - 200X, but I bought my last two. No real reason for me to build since I'm not building state of the art gaming rigs.
