Title: jikkjack's golden tee unplugged showpiece cab build
Post by: jikkjack on July 13, 2010, 12:24:00 pm
Hello!  ;D  After building my first Mame machine (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=87365.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=87365.0)) a couple years ago...I am now undertaking a new project.  I want a Golden Tee Showpiece (http://www.itsgames.com/itsgames/Products/GoldenTee/GTUnplug2010/index.jsp (http://www.itsgames.com/itsgames/Products/GoldenTee/GTUnplug2010/index.jsp)) but don't want to pay the top price for the unit - so - I am going to build my own.

I can buy a kit of the game (i.e. PC) but can save some serious cash by building the cab myself.  Since I can't find plans for the cab - I took some liberties and think I have a close model of what the showpiece cab looks like.  Before constructing a full size version - I created some miniature scale foam board versions to figure out the scale and curves of my new cab project.

Here is where I am right now.  I am happy with the results so I am creating the full-scale plans and should start cab building by next week.

Enjoy!

The only thing I need that does not come with the GT2010 Unplugged Kit is a Jamma Harness.  Can anyone provide guidance on a good price or place to source one of these for a Golden Tee Cab?  Thanks!

OK I get it now.  The mock up was the control panel pedestal.  When I first looked I thought it was the cabinet itself but after looking at the golden tee page I see how it goes together.

Thanks Dr. Zero!

@BobA - ha ha!  Yeah - I guess I should have put up a reference pic.  I updated my first post with the pedestal image.

Yes the pic makes it much easier to follow.   Looks like you have the shape all sorted out so good luck on the build.

I think that would be awesome as a stand alone piece and just hook it up to your TV when you get the urge to play. 46" plasma Golden Tee anyone??  :applaud:

Then you could just tuck it away somewhere and not take up as much room........then of course, this wouldn't be an arcade build....  :lol

Thanks BobA and Reptileink.

Finally made some progress.  I just finished cutting out the side template and swoosh that I will use to make the final cab.

Here are the side template pieces:

This week I am finishing up the front, back, bottom and top templates and then this weekend I am getting the 3/4" MDF and using a clone router bit to cut out the final parts.

Mock up is a great idea (runs to craft store). Let us know how the clone cuts work with those curves.

Clone bit worked great!  Just screwed the template to the interior face of each final piece and now I have 2 identical sides and swooshes.

Thanks Subconscious,

That funglo looks awesome.  I am furring up the side panels right now and hope to have some new pics up by this weekend.

T-Moulding comes in today and I want to start painting this thing over the long weekend.

Looking good!!

How did you attached the batons to the side walls, are they screwed through the baton into the mdf or through the mdf into the baton?

Did you use any glue at all?

Also, how did you get exact alignment of the batons on both side pieces?

Thanks
Title: Re: jikkjack's golden tee unplugged showpiece cab build
Post by: jikkjack on September 05, 2010, 12:55:59 pm
Thanks Jimmy2x2x.  I used Titebond wood glue and screws through the baton(furring strips) into the mdf.

Since the sides are identical - I used exact measurements for both sides and an angle finder to cut the furring strips to the exact angles for attaching the panels.

The bottom plate has 3/4" plywood below another layer of mdf which is where the side screws are attached to hold the side pieces to the base solidly and I also used a nail gun to temporarily hold the panels in the exact position I wanted while screwing the sides on.  The rest of the cab will be straight forward since all of the hard work is now out of the way.  The only challenge I have left is cutting the round dowel pole and attaching it to the top where the control panel will open.  I am probably going to have to remove some of the furring strips at the top to allow for this.  I am still thinking about it.

Thanks SpaceHedgehog!

So I finished up the panels but still need to paint and finish the control panel.  I am going to build the stand that holds the TV too!  That will hide the front locking casters when I move it to the final location where this thing will live.  I did manage to get a good deal on the tv I am planning on hooking this thing up to so I bought and extra for a bedroom. ;D

This design is having a similar effect on me as the Vewlix cabinets in that it has very strong and unique aesthetic elements. You've done a great job with the cabinet so far ... so much so that I'm reconsidering what I'm currently doing. Can you advise on how you're going to mount the tv?
Title: Re: jikkjack's golden tee unplugged showpiece cab build
Post by: jikkjack on September 07, 2010, 03:06:00 pm
Thanks severdhed.

Space - I am going to mount the tv on a low profile wall TV mount from monoprice (18 bucks).  I am going to build a bezel around the TV that looks similar to the mount that ITS has for $300.

I am going to use wood and hinges to simulate the bottom section and regular PVC pipe (sprayed black) to hide the HDMI wire up to the bezel.

This way I can wheel the cart into position - lock the front casters in place - then close the 2 hinged angled mount base pieces and secure them into place with screws into the cab.  For all intents and purposes it will look just like the reference picture but instead of metal - my faux mount will be made up mostly of 1/2" mdf.

Hopefully that give you a good idea of my plan but fire away with questions if you have any.

More pics.

I finished up the control panel top today.  That included building the front access hatch and the backstop for the cp.

Once the swoosh sides are installed - the cp will be attached through the face of each side swoosh.

I ordered two 120mm fans and a dust shield covers that should be in by next week to install in the front access hatch.  I will use the area typically designated for speakers to draw air in and the hatch will utilize the fans pointed out to push air out of the inside of the cab.  I am still on the fence on where to put the nighthawk box.  I could add a coin door to the front to access the box (that is the direction I am leaning) or I could always just access it from the new cp hatch.

Any idea's out there or opinions?

Thanks severdhed.

Got the swooshes painted and added the T-Moulding.  Next on the list is to paint the main cab this weekend and install the 120mm fans and vent filters.

Primed the main cab.  Next is lots of sanding then time to paint this canvas black.

The next project is to build the stand and bezel for the TV.

Here's a shot of where this thing will ultimately live.  Next up - building the base and running the HDMI cable.

The hard part is going to be waiting until the end of September when the 2011 unplugged kit becomes available.   :P

How sturdy is it? I had a problem with my pedestal center piece being wobbly on my show case build, I had to rebuilt the center piece.

Thanks javeryh!

@DCsegaDH - this thing is very sturdy.  If i understand you correctly the base is constructed of a sandwich of 3/4" mdf and 3/4" plywood.  The back has casters that only roll in a forward and reverse direction and the front has locking casters.

I am planning to attach the stand to the wall through the base plate and screw it into the 1.5" wood sandwich that sticks out the front of the cab to hold it perfectly in place but can be remove to access the storage room.

If you are referring to the top - it is also rock solid.  It rests on front and rear supports that are 1" and run from side to side.  It will not move easily and I am planning to add hvac foam under the side edges to ensure it stays in place even if the front hatch is removed.

Almost done with this project.  Good news is the kit is in...bad news is that the control panel overlay is wider than the website shows  :banghead: in the product dimensions.  That being said the buttons fit with a slight modification to the edges which is taking longer than expected to modify.

If I were building this again - i would make the playing surface 26" wide instead of 24.5" wide.  That's the only thing I would change.  I will post final dimensions (of revised cab) in case anyone wants to build a version of this and pictures of all my final installation shots/completion pics.

Awesome job!  I live on a golf course, and something like this would really be nice in my future man domain.

Do you have a link for just the golden tee unplugged kit that you got?  Also what was the cost?  You sparked my imagination, and I wouldn't mind trying something similar down the road and I just want to get a price point in my head.

Also, does the kit include the computer?  I'm assuming the kit doesn't come with all 100 games

What's your favorite games you got?

Thanks and congrats!

I just went to ITSgames.com and called to get an out of state dealer for the Offline Full Kit they have listed on their site.  That way I didn't have to pay sales tax.  >:D

http://www.itsgames.com/itsgames/Products/GoldenTee/GTUnplug2011/specs.jsp (http://www.itsgames.com/itsgames/Products/GoldenTee/GTUnplug2011/specs.jsp)

The kit (which is a PC that includes the graphics, trackball, buttons, marquee) was about 2300.00 with shipping included.  Then you only need a TV, HDMI cable and cab.  I think the cab I built ended up costing about 100.  TV was 400 so everything was around 2800ish.

By 100 games - I mean played golden tee over 100 times already...sorry for the confusion.  The 2011 kit has the 5 new courses and a back catalog of old courses - 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 - 5 courses for each year.

That gives you 30 HD golf courses and hours of entertainment!  Good luck with your build!

Thanks Javeryh.  Sadly - it needs a new home.  I have an idea for a unique replacement but right now it is in the storage room waiting for a new owner.  I must say I haven't really tried to sell it yet...but it is inevitable.  I need to figure out how much it is worth first...maybe like 300 bucks??? I just don't know.

Actually - I have been meaning to upload this for others to use if they want.  Here is a rar file that has the scale templates for the side and swoosh in .VSD format.  You will need Visio and a plotter to print it out but it should be perfect for the Arch E setting on most plotters.

Happy building!  ;D

I just ordered GTG yesterday and I want to build a cabinet before it arrives. Do you have this cabinet drafted in CAD? If so, may I have the .dwg file?

That's look great/awsome.

Anyone built something similar but used a Wireless solution for Video?

How did you make the cuts for the T-Molds? Seriously, are you a cabinet builder by trade?  I have been coming back to this website for a month now and looking at it.  I really think i can do this.

Sorry - haven't checked in on this thread in a loooong time.  Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!

@pinballjim - screen size is great!

@Tinshooter - I am not a cabinet builder by trade...but thanks for that!  I used a 3 wing slotting cutter with my router to cut the slot for the t-molding.  I can't remember where - but I bought it with the T-molding.  It was a little pricey ($35) but it was worth it because it cuts a perfect slot.  Rockler has them. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2119&rrt=1 (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2119&rrt=1)

Here is a final picture of the Marquee and this machine has been upgraded to 2013 too.

Awesome cab! Just built a computer for something like this and will be attempting to copy right off you! If I take your file to a kinko's do you think they would be capable of printing me the template? Also what kind of rig (truck) are you running in the back ground? Look tough, I have an FJ40 I'm trying to restore. Thanks- Don

Just curious when you bought the kit, did it come with the controls? And if it did where they already installed on a board or did you have to drill holes for buttons and router out an are for the trackball?

Evidently you can't buy these kits from ITS anymore.  Does anyone know what's in them?  Is it just like a MAME project where it's a motherboard, hard drive, and controller board and then you just build the cabinet around that?
Any pictures of the inside?
Thanks in advance!

That is curious.  I bought mine directly as a full offline kit.  I would call them back and ask if you can still buy the full offline kit through a distributor.  The full offline kit is actually just a computer.  It comes with 2 other boards that look like mini motherboards and it also comes with the control panel graphic, trackball and buttons.  I hope this is not the case because I am about to build this pedestal again but put Power Putt in it.  If they are only selling to commercial use then I will just have to get my buddy that owns a company to buy it for me...we shall see.

Thanks ids!!

thejuan - yes it did but I had to drill the holes for the buttons and trackball.  Yes, I also had to use a router to seat the trackball.

Jikkjack, I have a couple of questions;

How did you attach the overlay to the control panel; is it just hot glued on there?  I know the IT made cabinet don't have them screwed in, but not sure how they do it.

Do you have any kind of levelers on the bottom of the game, if so, what kind?

Did you just decide to throw the coin acceptor in there just for the heck of it?

I haven't really thought about that but I guess I could do that if it wouldn't cost too much and enough people were interested.  I still have the original wood templates.  How many people would be interested in a flat pack of the sides, swooshes, dowels, firing strips, front and back panels?

Since I have never really researched this before, typically how much does a flat pack sell for?  I am happy to itemize the cost of materials and shipping then come up with a fixed flat rate for my time and keep it reasonable for the DIY crowd if enough interest is generated.   :)

Did you still have the angles for the furring strips?  I just finished up making my template and want to get it all done by next weekend.

Thanks!

Awesome.  How did you cut that dowel down the middle?
Title: Re: jikkjack's golden tee unplugged showpiece cab build
Post by: jikkjack on April 14, 2014, 03:49:11 pm
I got a long wooden dowel from home depot that I think is used for a closet.  I then set my fence on the table saw to rip it down the middle.  The key is the dowel is longer than I need so I drew a line on the top of the dowel to show me where the saw needed to reach and then continued about an inch after that.  Once past the line - I just power down the table saw.  After the blade stops moving - i take the dowel over to the chop saw and cut the line and then I have a perfectly matched front and back and didn't loose my hand in the process of ripping the long dowel on the table saw.

Started this weekend cutting out the new sides and swooshes for the Power Putt machine.  I will try to post more details this time around about firing strip angles, dowel cutting/dimensions etc.

Ask away if you want me to photograph or detail anything in particular.  This build will follow much the same build as the Golden Tee but just minor improvements along the way.

Looking forward to seeing this done as well.  If you have the angles on those furring strips and lengths that would be awesome also the size of the panels attaching to those strips.

Cheers!
Title: Re: jikkjack's golden tee unplugged showpiece cab build
Post by: jikkjack on April 24, 2014, 10:19:25 am
Thanks byrneaar.  I will put in all of those measurements.

Ok so here is what I will focus on talking about today.

I have numbered each of the furring strips from 1 - 7 starting at the front of the showpiece and moving down and around.  To visualize the angles I will use the method that you are standing in front of your miter saw with the blade set at 0° and all angle references will show a (R) if you grab the miter and move it to your right or (L) if you grab the miter saw adjuster and move it left.

1.  8 15/16"  on the long side with a 6°(L) angle at the top and 4°(R) angle at furring strip #2
2.  24 1/8" on the long side with a 15.5°(R) angle at furring strip #1 and 15.5° (R) angle at furring strip #3
3.  22 7/16" on the long side with a 15.5°(L) angle at furring strip #2 and 14.5° angle at furring strip #4 (Note: this furring strip spans the bottom with furring strip # 2 and 4 sitting on top of it.  This is the furring strip that I put on first.  It is placed 4 1/2" from the bottom of the showpiece.  I sandwich one 3/4" MDF and one 3/4" PLY wood panels together to form a very solid 1 1/2" base for the casters.  I put 3 lines on the showpiece from the bottom.  The first at 3", the next at 4 1/2" and the final one at 17" all measured from the bottom of the showpiece.  I will detail the base plate and casters later.
4.  11 3/8" on the long side with a 14.5°(L) angle at furring strip #3 and 14.5°(L) angle at furring strip # 5
5.  6 1/2" on the long side with a 14.5°(R) angle at furring strip #4 and 0° angle on the left side looking at the reference image
6.  3 1/2" long with a 0°angle on the left side looking at the reference image and 1°(R) at furring strip # 7
7.  17 9/16" on the long side with a 6°(R) angle at the top and 1°(L) angle at furring strip #6.

Just reverse each of the angles for the other side or you can do what I did and just cut one and use it as a template and cut an identical furring strip and flip it over to use on the other panel.

A - 3/4"
B - 15/16"
C - 3 1/16" from the front edge following the 4 1/2" line
D - 1" from the deepest part of the curve to the edge of the furring strip as it goes up to meet the 17" line measured parallel to the 17" line
E - 1 1/16" following the 17" line from the edge
F - 3/4"

A and F should meet the front and back edge to create a flat area that will be used for attaching the wooden dowel.  The other areas are not as important but they need to be in the general area of these measurements.  The really important measurements are more the 3", 4.5" and 17" line.  Even the furring strip angles can be manipulated 1- 2°'s as necessary.

Here is the sandwiched 3/4" MDF and 3/4" PLY wood base plate.  This plate is 26" Long and 23" wide.  The casters are all place 1 1/2" from the side which you can see in the reference image above.

The Nighthawk shelf serves as the bottom of the exterior of the case as well as the internal shelf with a decorative 1 1/2" furring strip at the interior edge to ensure the wires flow smoothly over with no snagging.  This shelf is 12" deep and 23" wide.  If you choose not to use the decorative furring strip then you would increase the shelf size by 1 1/2" to 13 1/2"  x 23".

The back bottom panel is 17 3/16" with a 14.5° angle at the bottom and no angle at the top where it hits the Ply wood.  You could add this angle if you want but I didn't.  The goal is to get this thing air tight and I like to use the gap for caulk on the inside to aid my goal of air tightness.

The real machine uses this panel for speakers but since I am using the TV as my speakers I take the opportunity to use these holes for a filtered air intake.  I got 4 of these RFT-120 120mm Fan Filter covers from Newegg:

I start by measuring 2 3/4" from the top of the panel and marking that as the top line then measure 2" from the left and right side of the panel.  I removed the filter and place the fan filter cover with circular insert on the top and side lines and used a pencil to mark a rough circle in the 2nd circle from the edge.  Pressing on the interior circular part while removing the outer cover allows me to keep it positioned and continue to really mark the circle so I could use a jig saw and cut them out.  I then used a drill to pre-drill all of the screw holes because after I paint this thing I won't be able to see the top and side lines.

The back top panel is 18 2/16" on the long side and 18" on the short side after a 6° angle cut at the top.  The top angle gives a nice flat surface that the CP will sit on top of.

Ripping the 2" dowel on the table saw.  You can see the mark for 24 1/2 " that I rip past.  They sell this dowel at HD in the wood molding area.

And finally, here is the finished front.  I will put up the measurements later as I forgot my notes from this weekends progress.  You can see the routed slot handle, soft power button and two 120 mm fan cut-outs.  This showpiece, like the last one, pulls air in through filtered fan covers where the speakers normally go and exhausts the warm internal air out the top.  This is a very effective way to keep the computer inside cool and clean.  The nighthawk box has a filtered air intake too and so these things are really hard pressed to get any dust inside the computer.

Thanks man.  You are welcome.  I will keep updating the construction details post with the build details.  Just wanted to mention again that if you are building a Golden Tee make sure you measure the top CP for button placement.  The overlay I got with my GT kit was not the same width as advertised with the pre-built control panel (24.5") like this Power Putt.  I was pissed and had to route the internal sides a little to get the buttons to fit and it was tight.  I would make the playing surface 26" wide instead of 24.5" wide for my Golden Tee and increase all of the internal panels width from 23" to 24.5" wide to give room for the buttons.  Now if you got a pre-finished panel then just flip it over and measure it to find out the width and then subtract 1.5" (the width of the 3/4" MDF for the left and right) to figure out the panel width.  Just trying to save you a headache!

Painted.  Just need to build the stand and Marquee and take some pictures of this with the twin downstairs.

(http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Golden%20Tee%20Unplugged/IMG_20140503_195306_zps4dd90489.jpg) (http://s147.photobucket.com/user/jikkjack/media/Golden%20Tee%20Unplugged/IMG_20140503_195306_zps4dd90489.jpg.html)

After getting this thing put together - I feel like the buttons and ball are a little close to the front edge...(IT control board - that came fully built out and holes cut).  I think I am going to take the bullnose at the top and remove the spacer and put it at the bottom (below the trackball) to give a little more room.  It plays fine the way it is but feels a little cramped.  You obviously don't ever hit the ball like on the GT but this is something that I am definitely going to modify in the next few days.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if someone could help me on a few things directly involving this build. I have managed to put jikkjack's visio drawings on to vectric aspire and make them into a cnc file for my cnc router. I've got the cabinet cut out and basically assembled except for the control panel top. In trying to find the correct board for the software I keep seeing "to upgrade your gt xx". So my question is what board kit do I need to obtain? Ive built a load of mame machines but they are all roms and can run on emus off RPi's and the like. I'm not familiar with these dedicated board operated machines. Any help would be greatly appreciate. Point me in a direction or a parts website please.

Thanks in advance

Redneck1210, could you please pm me? I'd like to get a copy of the vcarve file if possible.

Hi Senoird... I'm interested in building a cabinet too... would it be possible to get a copy of your CNC files too?  Much appreciated if you can... thanks!!!  I assume you figured out what kit you needed, but let me know if you're still searching.

Old thread bump. Is anyone still offering a flat pack option for all the pieces used in this build? I'd like to build something like this.

Anybody have access to the CNC plans for this build? I see it has been requested multiple times with no response.

JikkJack

Amazing work. Recently finished a FunGlo pedestal project and have always wanted to try a GT build. I know this thread is incredibly old. Hoping there might be some templates you could send as a guide.

TIA

That build is superb!! Really compact and neat but love the flourishes on each side.

Is that Golden Tee running on MAME or is it an independant piece of software? I've only ever heard of Golden Tee on MAME but then you mentioned installing new courses and updates etc?

Thanks, really great thread. :-)

He is using the real games from IT not mame..  Really top notch work done on this.. It is to bad that vcarve files never made it around to others.
