Title: DoDon Arcade Bartop
Post by: njay on September 16, 2010, 02:34:43 am
Hi All,

Since i sold my old mame cabinet because i need to move to a smaller apartment i just cannot let go of the hobby.
Now my electronic skills are up to date , but i am not so at cutting out wood...  my local woodshop agreed to help me out.

My plan is to use a 15 inch tft for the screen it will be a two player setup with 6 buttons each....

Can anyone help me out with some plans in measured in centimeters? this will be hopefully the only help i need the rest should be good to go.

I also plan to use an intel atom board with ION graphics ship and a sata hard drive, this should be small enough to fit the bartop.

Thanks again !  :applaud:

*edit* I got the wee-cade plans but not all the measurments are there my woodshop requires all the precise measurments for them to cut out the wood.. :D

What a fail... stupid woodshops , we can't cut such corners or bends... pfff

Turncades won't ship outside the UK ... and shipping from emdkay is like 250 dollars ... no go ..

If anyone has another idea to get a Bartop kit let me know   :notworthy:

Assuming you are in North America, try this:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98248.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98248.0)

My first Bartop (see pic here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104923.msg1115650#msg1115650 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104923.msg1115650#msg1115650)) came from Peter on a whim (I was bored one winter week-end) now I'm hooked.

I live in Canada so shipping was reasonable - you'll have to contact him about shipping.

Be seeing you,

WonderAlex

Er - yah - that could be a problem.  :-[

Sorry.

But I did have a thought - instead of going to local build/wood shops look for a cabinet maker. There are many cabinet makers around here making replicas and custom furniture - I'm sure the same is true in the Netherlands.   They would be more likely to make those "strange" curved cuts that wood shops are afraid to do (I encountered the same thing here - if it's not straight they won't do it). Prices would be reasonable because you're only asking them to cut the wood not assemble & finish the cabinet.

OR re-design the wee-cade using straight cuts. Like a mini tempest cabinet or those old coleco micro-arcades from the 80's (see below) or some other straight-edged cab.

Then again I might be complicating stuff - try the cabinet makers before going for the re-design.

Be seeing you,

WonderAlex

Hi,

Anyone got experience with Asus AT5NM10-I (Retail, Gb-LAN, VGA, Sound, Mini-ITX)

It has an onboard intel graphics chip my aim for the bartop is MAME with KI2 as most heavy Rom to play.

I am using the Dual Atom 1.6 330 and the ION adapter with 3GB RAM on my ASUS 1201N and KI2 doesnt run well.  Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead run well, Fall out3 is totally playable...

Have you started laying out a control panel?  I'm wondering how big the controller panel would be and how other people like 2players on a bartop.  I am planning on building one myself soon and am still debating if I want to stick with one player or squeeze in two.

Hi,

I need an artist who can make me a customer side art, customer marquee and a custom CPO.

The cpo layout will be standard 2 player 2 sticks 6 buttons each on a straight row.
I will use the weecade plans so an additional 3 buttons go on the front bottom

I want it to be a mix of 1944 the loop masters and ki2 or to more easy between shmups and fighters

willing to pay ofcourse :)

Question:

Can anyone help me out with a Control Panel overlay for me to print out and cut the holes with that on the wood?

It will be 45 cm in widht and 15 cm in lenght..

I am not so handy with paint or any other tool for that.
Otherwise i will do it by trail and mistake..

Layout will be:

2 sticks with 12 buttons curved fighter style

Thanks in advance

Hi, take a look here http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html (http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html)

Choose the design you want, and download the DPI PPI you want and print it in photoshop , there you can set the exact DPI PPI so it prints on scale

Great cab!  I just see one tiny problem.  Player 1 stick is soo close to the edge, that may be uncomfortable for you to play any longer than 10 mins.  Player 2 stick persons hand could hit your buttons easily.  I had the same issue so i just put the sticks closer to the buttons.  Thats just me though.

It's fine just the way it is .. i now it seems tight but plays well .. maybe i should make some rubber wrist strip on the cp to rest the players wrist on.
But using a good chair to play with and not to low it's ok

No, the switches have to have a rotating actuator for when the ball rolls past the wire. Can't use lever actuators.

Marquee:

Note: the marquee is different i used a normal mdf piece as the frontside.
So i used a special Kit to glue it to the wood , so hopefully that will hold.

It's holding nicely i will be adding a 0,5mm plexiglass film over it.
Now i only need to find something to mount that...

^ I did that. there were bunch of other ideas but I couldnt figure out what to do with such a small 2 players panel. kept it simple.

project looks good so far.

Thx all :)

Should be all fine but the parts of the ships will be covered with buttons etc.
It's just to cramped to fitt all outside of the button/stick placement :)

but should be cool non the less

Software Update:

Installed mame 0.89:

Area 51 and puzzle bobble 2 is having sound stutter with mame 0.143 on my atom d525 proc.
With the older version it's way better, to bad Ki and Ki2 are still having stutter issues

Daphne installed

Installed PSX emulator besides epsxe because psx emulator has better light gun support without having to press f5 to change the controller type like on epsxe

What's that character in the artwork? It's not from any 'pachi game.  :dunno Is it from Killer Instinct or something?
