Title: The Dream Machine (First full sized cabinet) DONE! Link to Plans included!
Post by: Vidiot on April 30, 2015, 08:31:19 pm
So I've started work on my first full sized arcade machine. When I was a kid my favorite arcade was in the food court in our mall and it was called the Dream Machine. I decided to name my cabinet after my favorite arcade. I'm also incorporating their logo into my design. So far I've finished the base and today I got the sides cut out. I'm using 3/4" black melamine board for the construction material. The heart of the system is an Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD. I'll be using Hyperspin for the front end. The monitor I'm using is the largest 4:3 LCD I could find. It's an NEC 21.3". I've got a long way to go but I'm happy with the progress I've made so far.

The Dream Machine's company logo:

This is an idea of how I want it to look. The artwork is still a bit of a W.I.P.:

I also cut out the top piece of the cabinet but there isn't anything exciting about that so I didn't take any pics of it.

Got the top piece finished and started assembling the cab today. Starting to look like an arcade machine now.

You live in northern RI by any chance?

I'm in Northern Virginia.

Huh... we had an arcade with the same name and logo up here. I guess they were a chain. You learn something new every day.

We had a Dream Machine in our mall and I have the best memories from it!  :D

I thought I'd share a little more progress. I got the back door fitted and mounted in place.

Actually I lucked out. Bought it that way. It was N.O.S.. Got it from a local company that sells old coin-op equipment.

Thanks. I used these hinges from Lowes:

Love the hinges! Is the top panel going to be hinged as well, or just solid?

I'm not a big fan of the artwork, but I must say that I am very impressed with how your machine is coming together. The back door looks good, and everything else looks nice and clean. Good job on the cab so far.

Yeah the top will be solid but the control panel will hinge open. These hinges are really strong heavy duty too.

Thanks man. Yeah it's funny, I'm not really a fan of my artwork either. :laugh2: I mean I like the marquee and bezel okay but I really want to come up with something that doesn't just have random arcade characters scattered about for the sides. One thing I really want to keep though is the Dream Machine logo. I mean the whole theme kinda revolves around that.
Here's what I think I'm gonna go with for the Marquee and Bezel:

Yeah, the logo is fine, and I love the fact the name has actual meaning to you (as opposed to a generic -cade name). The color scheme and stars are fine - I'd lose all the characters and do something diffrerent, like maybe different random colored stars or something like that, with the name still on the sides. You've got a good foundation to work with.

Definitely can't change the Dream Machine theme or I will hunt you down, and I WILL kill you...lol. Build it for all us East Coasters who enjoyed many dark lighted days pumping our paper route money into these wonderful buzzing machines! As for the side art, it's a toss up. I kind of like the multi-characters, but I think the Dream Machine logo on the side with the stars all over the cab would be pretty cool.

Hahaha. No hunting and killing required. :lol My main inspiration for this build is the Dream Machine theme.
So the arcade characters are definitely out. I'm just playing around with different ideas for the sides and the control panel. I don't want to rush it. I don't want it to end up something I get tired of looking at.
Thanks guys for the critiquing. While I might not use everyone's advice I do appreciate the input.

So this is the layout I've chosen for the CP. The artwork is still a w.i.p.:

I like the Neo-Geo button pattern for the bottom row buttons and all black for the top row. I'm using the new Ultimarc "Goldleaf" buttons for the action buttons. They feel awesome but I haven't actually played any games with them yet. The joysticks are Happ Perfect 360's with blue and red ball-tops. I'm using the 3" U-Trak trackball and above that will be a SlikStik Tornado spinner. I'm using these cool little "angel eye" buttons for the admin buttons. I don't want a lot of crazy LED lit controls. There's nothing wrong with LED lit controls but I really want this to be classic arcade-like. The "angel eye" buttons have a subtle lit ring around the button. Here's what they look like lit up:

Been a few years. That's Lloyd alright. He moved or has multiple locations.

Good guy - lots of fun. You are lucky to have him by you. He sells games/parts for reasonable prices.

Yeah every once in a while he has an open house day and the public can come in and walk around. So dangerous when that happens. The warehouse is only an hour away from me.  >:D

So I've been playing around with my artwork a little and I think I'm starting to settle on this for the side art:

The yellow in the stars makes the yellow in the word machine look washed out or faded.

Yea, when I "eyedropped" it in paint, the "yellow" in "machine" is actually like a greenish yellow versus the bright yellow of the stars. I would match the yellow all around if I were the OP, as I can see what you are saying now, and did notice the difference.

I think the true yellow looks much better.

Yeah the colors in the Dream Machine logo are the actual colors they used so I kinda wanna keep that. I did lighten the yellow in the stars some and I do think it looks a little better. It's strange though because when I first made the colored stars I used the dropper tool from the logo so I would have the same exact shade of yellow. I dunno how it would have changed.

Anyway the change is pretty subtle but here is what I did:

I like it better that way, now the logo really pops.

Small update to show some progress. I was able to spend a little time this weekend working on the speaker panel below the marquee area.

First I mounted the speaker grills to the board where I wanted them and then used a 3" hole saw to get the hole started:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Uey9JMu6owAIRzoMOF4aUu-xqG8Fd2VGbGcNj7qfOOsPVFViul3M7ct7QntF8uUi6FveO4mUsp7yr9-OaU5syVPDrF2soS0-ZsNXaSsbb98PDDuVAaZn5x91QXMNSMwLwXp07l0f4-ZfM8rRdRCGjCrdBE_IoLW1jUEr-BURRQjaKq63Enh5v5ujB59ociskUv74rzczcbFDuIxrVMuybmXeF3TXVNiZZXVSkbKc4ryr6FPhowYMo3Ca1WMy-j_pa_V20oCDGrnUq3o-w9a51yExA1LIMqP3IeAA0OE4JD3w71EoL7ycwXMUr2kHpIeRKH1HLkkNNlvVWgN-xXKUO0xC8m4jTn2kJvRMabXMgnniPpxmtJpimdG0CYDVX7DSIpPB9J1xl3IQ1rJVbBPv_7g_ceL4o_A-evmY_mS0i8E7p3QJnxbAljYJRmAizlS_OFpI7fVta6I955bQs_hFdDxV1KhtzHRnfinu098SGxxAhklb3PGD4YsbvcR6PfUvUlSLdBdgDfKuIiaKHz7l0pwnA9SlblT8wHpGocWwHpwSOY-CjsG78SBQ5qqcONWz58cndxk6BjODDOxgsVNzgCLZOZGj70sMk5wYrV4oeX8oZ9aADbVO_zJ5rJcTOmYrC_dYmiB4JcwqN1HO1MKHTkDBKRAGSP_TwU9iSQss3V9XFaWoym-INg=w1223-h917-no?.jpg)

Then I flipped the board over and used the flush cut router bit to finish up the holes using the speaker grills on the other side as a trim guide for the bearing on the flush-cut bit:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rRI4mCeT2NQgYFtYxeNtZytZj_ZYH2g8J8t-zI5ti4RxXeOEtHcaJzeNyxoZCR7ZpF-jscJgCvPCWli6X0wj8r8mFSyBS-55VKn89Ep_p8a26OyTsZJWP7Ibr_OobbBAualXH75u6MGGqwt4sX9Fc3GirXEWy4jgLUIf2CkkX9JOry3NHfUfZUS-WCgU-63zVpVL6hJdTAyrURJT31nxsRhJxxu1YEj_UVz58YfhRbnAm45R5hQi_StvtxWG_aJN5lhiHk_EPVGNLSLZblX0e4V0Sszd8Zn4uk2lDru8vjadDiSqxRMdQrUTOH87bYwh69-RD9Ep-iL3uWp67OVtDhqL2Wju9BNLjTD2QepuQHScTthZEId94ugTXDY9sKmLdvEwyGMlu_99EoMbUx6d8C9f30SdThTYeFMKjyfH_uO4bifQDnZ8jqTi-HKkteGxyC8MG9n_7QE9o3D1lJpENYJxAgepe9pbfcG2M7N5imVLpS3_BVEW6VoP-2epAQxeD_kkzf__aIA6y2dFMAARC8XfWyUHR365Xut6Ly0lDVqBfYcF4qznURLF2l_5FilREtpc_fuRMYWmXPXxxc10ssFDjMU6ApuqLv0S5W8MgCnPNnZDSW6nLOIk1uD6hU4xW5T80dNqg-ind7OcW40U-qq0ku6q2HpMLIarYUc9ccT6Xh6TvCTYsg=w1223-h917-no?.jpg)

This is what it looks like installed. I also mounted the marquee retainers:

While I had the machine laying on it's side I thought I would take some pics of the bottom to show how I did that part:

Okay definitely time for another update. I've made a lot of progress since my last post. The Memorial day weekend allowed me some more time to get some things done too.

I got the box and shelf made for the coin bucket:

I mounted a piece of angled aluminum on the bottom of the bezel wood to hold the plexiglass in place. This is how I split that laminate  :banghead::

Thanks man.

I got the control panel cut out and even managed to router fit the plexi to fit as well. I' needed to find a piece of wood 5/8" thick to use with my plexi so the 3/4" t-molding will fit properly. I found this melamine shelf board at Lowes and it was just right for the CP. Now I need to get those holes drilled!

Well I've got the computer mounted inside now and while testing out the complete system to make sure everything functions inside the cab I realized that I mounted my monitor a little too high for me to be happy with it. So now I need to remake the bezel wood piece. :banghead: Not too big of a deal but still a setback! On the upside it will allow me to perfect the mounting of it so the control panel mates up better with the little metal trim along the bottom of bezel wood.

Another snag I ran into was not getting any audio from the right speaker. I verified that that amp is working properly so hopefully it's just a problem with my speaker wiring and not the speaker itself.

Another progress report!

So I decided to use the existing bezel wood and just cut the hole a little lower for the monitor. It turned out really well and saved me a lot of work. I bought a piece of black poster board to go between the wood and the smoked plexi that will hide the extra hole above the monitor. Sorry, I didn't really take any pics of this process. :(

I got the control panel finished up. It really took a lot of tweaking to get things to line up good. I decided to mount the joysticks under the panel recessed into the wood as deep as I could. The shafts are a little short above the panel but they still feels pretty good to me and I think I can get used to it.

I did get the audio fixed. It was just a bad audio cable. Replaced it and now the sound is perfect. Now I've discovered that the trackball isn't rolling well. It's like its binding up inside. I'm wondering if the bolts are too tight or something. I need to have a serious look at that now. I'll be getting the rest of the art applied asap to finish that up. Then on to wiring!

Tip from the Ultimarc website :

After installation:
You will likely find the ball is quite stiff to rotate in certain directions. This is owing to the fact it has to slide over the rollers to some extent and is quite sticky from the manufacturing process. It will ease with use. For an immediate perfect usage, you can apply a small amount of liquid soap or hand cream to the ball.

I had the same problem, took mine apart, applied some hand cream to the ball, put it back together. Worked like a charm.

Always a joy following your work. Good pictures and descriptions of your build make it a breeze to follow. Really love your artwork. I'm also glad you decided to go with the sideart that didn't have characters plastered all over it. Sometimes less is more.

Thanks. Do you remember what kind of hand cream you used? I'm thinking my issue might be a little more problematic. The ball rolls much harder than it did before I mounted it. Also when I roll it I can hear a roller underneath still spinning without the ball. I think I've got it too tight. Anyway, I would love to smooth it out though so if you can remember what cream you used I appreciate it. :)

And thanks guys for the compliments!  :)

Just some normal hand cream. The brand is Nivea, I don't know if you can buy that in America. That shouldn't matter, though.

When assembling the trackball, mind the location of the rollers. It is possible to position them slightly off, which results in cranky movement. I had to take my trackball apart again to correct that.
Which reminds me : Do a test BEFORE you put it back into your CP. And before you screw the CP back into the cab. I didn't.

Sounds good man. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you guys for the kind words. ;)
I was able to get the trackball rolling good again and I got it to fit better in the panel. Thanks again yamatetsu for the tips :)

I spent some time yesterday tidying up the cabling inside:

Now I'm ready to move on to mounting the control panel and wiring everything up! I still want to block the back of the marquee lighting somehow. I'll be working on that soon as well.

I wanna give a shout out to Lucian045 (Brad) for the excellent artwork printing. I'm very happy with it. :)

If you mean to block the black border around the marquee : Make a cardboard bezel in the shape of the black border, tape it to the inside of the marquee.

Actually I want to do that too :lol but I was referring to the whole area behind the marquee / speakers. I just want to do something simple like maybe cut out some black poster foam board and velcro it in there. That way I can just take it out if I need to work on it. I'll post some pics when I get around to doing it. I like your idea of using black cardboard behind the marquee. I was thinking of blocking off the black areas with electrical tape but I think I will use some black poster board instead.

This a damn nice build.
I love the art theme used throughout.
The attention to detail inside the cab is also very nice.

the jiysticks and buttons do look a little high up on the ckntrol panel. Are they comfortable to use?

Thanks man. The controls feel good. The joysticks are little short but I can get used to it. Feels strange trying to play pacman with my left hand though. I'll probably configure the player 2 stick for pacman & ms. pacman.

So, I'm really trucking along and I feel like I'm in the final stretch and of course I've got another nagging problem to figure out. My "smart" surge strip is not turning the other components off anymore. When I shut the computer down the marquee light, audio amp, and monitor stay on. It worked fine until I started hooking up controls. Seems that the usb devices and even a connected Ethernet cable are drawing enough power from the "off" computer to leave the surge strip on. I checked the power settings on the motherboard and it looks like everything is disabled such as Wake on LAN, turn on by keyboard, etc. So I'm really not sure what to do about it other than try a different "smart" strip. Anyone ever have a similar problem with smart surge strips? I was thinking of hooking up a powered USB hub for the controls to see if that would stop the power drain from the motherboard. I wish the smart strip I'm using had a sensitivity setting.  :banghead:

Not sure which smart strip you have but if it's like the Bits Limited ones there's a sensitivity dial on the side that handles exactly what you're describing.

This is the one I have:

Unfortunately it doesn't have a sensitivity setting on it. I just ordered a different one from Amazon. I got this one this time:
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-4941-Autoswitching-Technology/dp/B000P1QJXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433775065&sr=8-1&keywords=smart+strip&pebp=1433775067122&perid=0BDS67X8A44YW7ZQSBPV (http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-4941-Autoswitching-Technology/dp/B000P1QJXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433775065&sr=8-1&keywords=smart+strip&pebp=1433775067122&perid=0BDS67X8A44YW7ZQSBPV)

Hopefully this will fix my problem.

I have the Belkin smart strip which doesn't have the sensitivity adjustment either but I've never had a problem.
However I do use a powered usb hub.

As far as control mapping for 4 way. On my panel, I kept my player 1 stick as an 8 way with a round gate because that's the feel I prefer for shmups and what not and my player 2 is a 4way/8way.
My reason for this was because the player 2 stick is more in the middle of the cab so it allows me to play left or right handed on 4 ways even if the game uses buttons.
The downside is that I have to explain the setup to others but that's hardly a big deal

I just got the new surge protector smart strip today and it does have a sensitivity adjustment on the side so it should work out.

I am more concerned now about my joysticks. I had one of my perfect 360s stop working and they don't make them anymore. :banghead: It stopped working left and right. Up and down still work. I'm sure it's a problem with the PCB but I'm not sure I can repair it. So now I am considering new sticks. MGB I saw your post in the reviews section on the new Dominux 8 joystick from GGG. Did you ever get a chance to play on it? I'm considering that one. Thanks.

Sadly I haven't had time to install it yet but Delusional has them on his machine and I gave them a try.
It's a nice stick.

The perfect 360 should be repairable though.
Title: Re: The Dream Machine (My first full sized arcade cabinet) Calling it 99% DONE!
Post by: Vidiot on June 19, 2015, 01:15:25 pm
Well I'm about ready to call this 99% done!

I was actually able to fix my Happ perfect 360 joystick. I took it apart and started checking voltages across the board to see if anything didn't seem right. What I found was that the sensors for the Left and Right controls were not getting the proper voltage. I traced it back to the IC Inverter chip on the board. I found a replacement chip from Mouser (Part Number MM74HC14M) for .51 cents. Of course the shipping was 7.99. lol. But anyway after I replaced the chip I check voltages again and they were now correct. I reinstalled the joystick and it still wasn't moving Left. After more investigation I discovered that one of the inputs in my IPac was dead. After I rewired the Left to another input on my IPac everything is working properly!

Here are my final build pics. I hope to have a youtube video up as some point as well. When I do I'll post it in here.

I found a couple Dream Machine tokens, polished them up, and glued one of them to my spinner. I couldn't think of a better place to put her:

Well I'm about ready to call this 99% done!

You gotta call it 100% if you want to be eligible for any awards.  >:D

Nice work Vidiot! Wow, you have been busy since your last post. I've always appreciated your attention to detail, cable management and problem solving skills.

The fold down control panel is a convenient feature. And the serial tag on the back is a nice detail. Very nice cab overall.

What's next for you?  Too soon?  ;D

Well I guess she is 100%.....for now :lol I mean you fellow builders all know that our cabs are never really 100% done after all. ;D

And thank you so much for the kind words. I'm really happy with how she's turned out. I feel like I did the Dream Machine arcade of my memories a justice with this homage. However, award material? I dunno if I'd go that far but thank you!

My favorite part of this build was it's evolution. It's no secret I'm not a fan of characters being plastered all over the cab, marquee, and control panel in random and haphazard manner, and I love how you removed those elements but still maintained the theme and ended up with a machine that looks unique and still pays homage to your memories. I'll be the first to nominate it for a UCA (or whatever it's going to be called) when the time comes.

I 2nd that! I don't need every character on the side of a cab to help me understand that it is an arcade machine.  :D  I was also very happy with Vidiot's final artwork. Now drink a beer and enjoy your hard work.

Ya know, I love classic arcade characters and I've seen collages of them that look cool but I just couldn't come up with something I liked. And all of them use characters from the same source so there isn't anything unique about that design other than how you arrange them. I really took your suggestions to heart and I totally agreed. You, Reptileink, and PL1 really helped motivate me with your ideas and suggestions and I appreciate that. I love this community.

To even be considered for an award is an incredible compliment. Thank you so much. There are so many awesome builds on here.

It's funny, I didn't want to say anything, but I felt like I was a part of this build. Having the same amount of love for the Dream Machine, and helping in the initial stages with artwork suggestions really made me feel like I was at least a "part" of this community.

Great clean build, and I LOVE the serial tag on the back. It's a shame that little details like that get hidden from the cave men who point and say, "arcade nice" .......lol.

Can't wait till your next one, and you sure were an inspiration!  :applaud:

Just came across this thread today and read through everything. Looks great! I'd say you made the right choice with nixing the characters on your side art -- the logotype and stars tell you everything you need to know. I don't have anything substantive to add, but I did want to at least say, "hey, man, this looks great!" And now I've said it twice. So there you go! :)

Yeah the bases on those joysticks are already recessed on the top so the dust washer can just sit on top of the joystick base under the panel. I figured it might give the CP a cleaner look.

sorry, that was an accident.

I prefer the dust washers under the artwork when possible.

In case anyone is interested, I just updated the thread with a PDF document of some basic plans. Just tried to include some of the more important dimensions and concepts. I apologize for the rough drawings. I don't use Autocad or anything. Hopefully they do get the idea across. You can grab them attached from the first post or get them here:

True kudos to you, Vidiot. Great plans - clearly made out with others in mind. Most people in this hobby just take, a lot of the time without even a thank you. It's refreshing to see someone give back to people selflessly. A rare quality these days indeed. Keep up the good fight, brother! :)

Hi, looks like the after they restored the server, all the August post have been lost. So I wasn't able to see your last response.

From memory, I think I was asking you if those marquee brackets are at 90 degrees and if not, what angle would they be. Also, are the angles at the same width or is one side longer than the other. If it's possible can I have the dimensions of the brackets.

Thanks

They have a curve to them so they fit a variety of cabinet styles. They were a little longer than I needed so I just cut them to fit the width of my cabinet. I bought them from twistedquarter here:

Here is a photo of what they look like from the edge:

Thanks in advance

Hi, I would like to know where have you buy this kind of hinge

If you're referring to the silver strut holding the control panel open I think I bought it from a seller on eBay. Just look for a "cabinet lift". I believe the strength is measured as 50nm. I love this thing. Works like a charm to hold the control panel open and take the strain off the hinges.

If you're referring to the piano hinge, this type is referred to as an "offset piano hinge". Again I purchased it from eBay.

This is the guy I ordered from.
I don't remember specific sizes but this is probably the one I ordered:

I updated the plans to correct a couple wording mistakes and improved the overall quality of the document somewhat. As a result, the PDF is too large to make as an attachment to a post so I am sharing it from dropbox. Here is a link for anyone interested: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fxpsj8yofwi5ozv/Dream%20Machine%20Arcade%20Plans.pdf?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/fxpsj8yofwi5ozv/Dream%20Machine%20Arcade%20Plans.pdf?dl=0)

The plans include a parts list at the end.

Hello,

This machine is incredible. I grew up in MA going to dream machines and I am currently building a unit myself. Would you mind sharing the graphic files for your side, marquee, bezel, and/or joystick panel? I was looking for a dream machine logo but what i've been able to find online are so low res. I'd be forever grateful if you shared the files you sent to your printer.

Sure. I just replied to your email. Strange I never got notified of your reply to this forum post so I'm glad you reached out in an email.

Sure does suck what photobucket is doing these days. I really should update this thread with new hosted photos. Maybe I'll get around to it one day.

Good luck on your project. I would love to see progress pics as you go.

Cheers!

Went through the old photobucket linked photos and relinked them with google. Hopefully the important build photos are showing up ok now. Also the links to the cabinet plans should be working again.  8)

This build is nothing short of awe inspiring! So much so that I'm tossing about the idea of extending the base back a little to accommodate a bench (or dare I even say bucket seats?).

You see, I'm a disabled individual that is unable to stand for more than about 10 minutes at a time. Having a seating arrangement would be perfect for my needs, but I wanted to ask your permission to use your plans first before I go out and start asking (begging) people to help build it. Thanks! 🙂

Vidiot seems like a cool dude - he's not going to care if you use his plans especially if you tweak them to fit your specific needs.  We all start with other designs in mind.

Thank you for the complement! Please use the plans however you like. I am flattered whenever anyone wants to use them. I would love to see your cab if you would share your build with us.  8)
