Title: Parting out an "old" Project Arcade or not?
Post by: shawnzilla on October 21, 2021, 08:31:20 am
Would love some honest opinions about this, because I'm torn. We'll be moving within the next year and my beloved Project Arcade machine can't come with us. It's a bit of a time capsule of parts that were available when I built it, so it has things like an Oscar spinner, Act Labs light gun, KE72T encoder and that big kiosk monitor that we were all using for a while.

It's a BIG machine. We made it way taller than it was supposed to be (over 7 feet tall) and it's heavy as all get out. If this were you, would you part it out and then hope someone wants the shell for a project? Or, would you leave it intact and try to sell it? I suspect parting it out would be financially better, but it sort of feels like that would be disassembling something that I worked so hard on.

How could one destroy such a perfect monument to the futility of human endeavor?

Why is it so tall?

In the For Sale ad you could advertise there's room to install 2 additional monitors.

After making the decision to sell there is no real reason to care what happens to it. For me personally it isn't worth the effort to part something like this out and have to deal with multiple sales. I would just want it gone all at once.

A bonfire would be a good solution.

Send it back to the bowels of hell where it came from.

Nahh, shove a 43" LCD in there vertically and replace the front bezel plastic.  Fixt.

It’s still waaaaaay too tall.

We'll be moving within the next year

I do genuinely hope you'll be taking the cat(s) with you when you move.

So many cats get abandoned when people move home.

Noticed the cat basket on the shelf. Wife an I have run a cat rescue in the UK for the last 4 years so that's why my brain works that way!

Good luck with moving on your project cab. I know I'd hate to part with mine.

I always drown them on my way out of town, more humane than letting them starve in an empty house.

I had a ladybird cabinet that got chopped up and went into the dumpster.

You could just remove the guts and leave it at the recycler.

On a more serious note...
Why not disassemble it and use the parts to make a bartop you can take with you?

That beast easily has enough wood to make two bartops really- maybe three even.

Gives an opportunity to go basic black and calm the whole situation down and not have to give up arcade joy either.

Not to mention you can set it on free play and ship that coin door to me for offering such sage advice
 ;)

Personally I'd disassemble it and save as many parts as possible, but I've got a hoarder streak.  Put anything big & heavy on Kijiji / Craigslist / Freecycle.  However, a lot of the parts will probably fit in a small box - and there's nothing more annoying than having to buy something a second time.

I had this exact problem when I bought my new home. Mine was a Player's Choice 10 cab that I had converted. My very first arcade in all it's Athlon XP glory. Had one of the very first iPac's ever sold in it. I ended up gutting out the PC for other stuff, then gave the cabinet away. Never knew what became of it, wish I had it back, would love to modernize it. Were talking 20+ years ago.!!

OMgosh funniest thread I've seen in a while.

Okay so you can't take it with you due to size.. This project actually COULD be saved with some work.
The controls actually do not look horrendous at the very least the control panel size seems reasonable.

to be honest it looks like you avoided a lot of pitfalls we have seen, other than the height and monitor decision
it's really not that bad when you do the math.

Im in favor of actually selling it as-is.. parting out the parts would take more effort unless you just want to find them good homes.

Having said that.. if you do decide to part it out I'd like to get first choice on that coin door, it looks complete. (?)

Why is it so tall?
Musta been all those hormones in the milk growing up.

In the For Sale ad you could advertise there's room to install 2 additional monitors.
Actually this is not a terrible idea.. either a widescreen TV/Mon and make it into a vertical beast.. or would make a great platform for a player choice 10

although i personally am not a fan of PC10.

LMAO that ones going in my save folder.

*IF* you still want a MAME cab unhook the controls and take the control panel with you. Leave the rest in the basement for someone else's back to worry about.

@shawnzilla have you decided what you'll be doing with this?

If you're parting it up and if they are vga, I'd be interested in the act-labs
