Hey guys
I'm converting one of my Electrocoin Midi jamma cabs into a vertical, single player, 8-way groovymame cab.
It'll be running 15Khz vertical raster games, with the control panel set out as follows: -
Button2, Button1, Joy8way, Button1, Button2
So single joystick in the middle, 2 buttons for either right or left handed play.
I'm looking for any obvious omissions from the following game list. I don't really want anything on there later than mid-nineties. And I'm not a fan of bullet-hell shooters so those are already very limited in my selection below.
I've included a few 2-player shooters in the list, but obviously with 1 joystick you won't be able to play with 2 players simultaneously, which is fine.
I'm not having any 2- or 4-way games on this cab. I have another cab in mind for those with a better suited joystick, so this is 8-ways only.
Have I missed anything decent? :)

The Gaming History entry shows it as a 4-way.

The good news is that it is very tolerant of diagonal inputs so you move in the last cardinal (U/D/L/R) direction triggered/held -- unlike Donkey Kong where hitting a diagonal stops you moving until the diagonal is released.
Dig Dug II will work fine with an 8-way stick. ;D

you got to add Gaplus or Galaga 3 on that list (even it's only a 1 button game).
-
How about Phoenix?

Ah Gaplus! Good one, can't believe I missed that out! :applaud:
Phoenix looks to be 2-way? So I'll probably leave that for my other vertical cab.

I've found that Contra is a very popular game in Thailand, though it is a two-player game as well.
2-way games like Phoenix and Galaga would translate well to an 8-way joystick. I've run them on my cabs with 8-way joys and all has been good, or am I missing something?

I think they work better on an 8-way joystick than 4-way yeah. In my case though I'm planning on using another cab with a dedicated 2-way joystick, running a MiSTer for the 2-way games, as i think the majority of those are supported on that platform.

you can also add "War of of the Bugs"
Nice Centipede style game.

Galaga '88
Nevermind .. that's a 2-way game.

That's 4-way innit?

Thanks! Added

Kicker.
That's 4-way innit?
Yes. But it never had a dedicated cab as far as I know.
When I was a kid I played it at the arcade in a Time Pilot cab.
I played it in some other cab at another arcade and that was 8 way too.
My childhood experiences have dulled my need for a 4 way stick for this game.

If you plan on building a 4 way vertical cab then just save it for that one.

Heh it's funny because it looks like it would be an 8-way game, and I always thought it was tbh, but checking yesterday and everywhere says its 4-way! Ah well, I'll leave it for the 4-way cab. :)

Q-Bert (is on your list) is a 4-way DIAGONAL dunno how easy/hard to play it with an 8-way.

Qbert deserves a cab for itself

Yeah, the reason it's going on my 8-way cab, is because at least it's possible to play on that... not possible on a normal 4-way cab. Of course I'd rather have an original Q*Bert, but until then, this is the next best thing! :)

I've tried playing QBert with an 8-way a few times before, never pretty :)

here is a mod I did with my 8-way stick adding a diagonal leaf switch for Q-bert, Congo Bongo etc..
This switches are installed diagonally on the bottom of a Happ 360 8-way stick.
It works pretty well.

Interesting.
I wonder how well a variation on that mod would work if you used a Happ Super and a 3d printed holder for leaf switches.
- Mount the holder the same way as the GGG SUPER 4-way™ Precision True Restrictor (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=310).
- The (#12 wood?) screws are huge, but the holes are already in the Super base so you don't have to do any precision drilling. ;D
- If properly designed in OpenSCAD, the mount would be parametric so you can customise the X-, Y-, and Z-axis position of the switches by adjusting three variables and re-rendering the part. (no special programming skills required)
- The mod might also work with other joysticks, assuming there is a good way to attach the switches + holder assembly and there is enough shaft length.

Congo Bongo & Q*Bert are playable with an 8-way with a square restrictor, less playable with an octagonal restrictor, likely unplayable with a circular restrictor.

Thanks guys, I have an 8-way with a square gate. They seem to play OK, but I am not a wiz at these games. It'll do for this cab :)

IMAGO would be a good addition.
