I was reading "The Perfect Arcade" article on gamespy today and noticed that it mentions the Project Arcade book. It also mentions that there will be a new version later this year. I was just curious on the status of this. I currently own the original, but would love to see an updated version come out. Here is the article in case anyone missed it.

Blip, blip, blam!
You are our friend?
-
That is great. I'll be looking forward to the pre-order link.
-
Great. my mom just spent 50 bucks on the old one for my birthday 2 weeks ago... It wont render the first version completely obsolete will it? I would feel bad lol, my poor broke mom got it for me. :P

Are you kidding? You now have a vintage collector's edition!
-
Any clues as to what to expect?
I'm assuming much will stay the same but with updated products, a section on lighting buttons/joysticks and maybe a pinball section? Also the lightgun section could use an update.
-
Just saw that its due to come out 1/25/11, awesome!

Interesting
Says 1/07/11 for Canadian book seller Chapters.
That can't be right...there' s no reason it should come out in Canada before the States.
:dunno

Ha, perhaps that is what the "hall of Fame worthy projects" thread was all about. ;)

Hmm.... what an interesting idea ;)

That's great! I got the old book and it's awesome. I am sure that there is a lot to update since it was written. That is about the time I plan to start building my cab too :)
-

Pre Ordered from amazon.
-
ditto

it would be cool if you submitted a clean pdf for the kindle reader. I got the original through kindle and the scans they did were pretty lame. The actual book is probably better I bet.. especially for diy projects. I still don't get why the kindle or the kindle software don't let you write directly on the pages with a tablet or the reader. =/
-
Cool......i Just found out about the second edition today and can't wait. I have the original book and am a big fan. I still refer to it even today and I finished my mame build 2 years ago.
What's new in the second edition and does it come with a cd again?
I have preordered it and can't wait! :)
all we need now is for spystyle to put his web guide into print as a book! I would buy that too! :)
-
Ryglore, what +are+ you talking about? ;)
@MikeZilla
50$ seems like a bargain. When I got on ebay to look for a copy of the original printing, the only one I found was going for 250$! I kid you not.
I'm just hoping there's details about using linear actuators in cabs in the new version ;D

Heh. Umm... version 3 maybe?

BYOAM! I like it. Congrats, hope you sell a ton!

why different release date in USA?
Amazon United Kingdom - 6 January 2011
Amazon Germany - 6 January 2011
Amazon France - 6 January 2011
Amazon Canada - 6 January 2011
Amazon United States - 1 February 2011
-
No idea. I'm positive it won't be available anywhere earlier than in the US... I'll check with my publisher.
-
I ordered from Amazon.ca and it is not scheduled to arrive until Jan 19. That is with their free shipping option.

The Jan 19 date is the arrival date at my door with the shipping option that I chose. That is why I said arrive and noted the free shipping option. ;D

I'll buy it more to support Saint than anything else. It's a great reference but I found that I read more online during my first build than I did in referencing the book. I did read the book extensively though and you can see all of the saw dust in it from when it was in the garage with me.

Same here. Hosting all my images and long-winded threads ain't free!
-
Amazon just sent me an email saying not to expect my pre-order till FEB 3 now...
-
This is awesome news! I bought the first one I wanna say almost 2 years ago and even though it still gets well used to this day, It still looks brand new. ;D
I cant wait for this 2nd edition. Great job and thank you. :applaud:

I just found a copy of the 1st edition at a second hand bookstore for a few bucks complete with the cd : ) . I am just about to undergo the project of building a cabinet with my son.. How much information is updated in the book . Am i better off picking up the next version of the book or is the vendor lists and information here(online) more relevant with the old book ?
Just curious

The basics haven't changed. There have been more technological changes (encoders and other hardware changes) that won't be in the first edition that may be in the 2nd. Ultimarc , GGG, and others have made a lot of progress in the last 5+ years that the first edition won't have.
You can easily build a cabinet with the first book and it'll be great. There are more options available now on the hardware side but that's covered on the msg boards. I'm sure a lot of it'll be in the book too.

Glad I was routed to this forum - looking at building my first MAME and don't know where to start ...... pre-ordered the book off Amazon. So high hopes it will tell me how to build one...... I have a 25" Sony Trinitron Flat Screen CRT Color TV (KV-XA25M80) that hoping can use but fear too big.
Fingers crossed!

I bet that TV will look very good! And I doubt it will be too big. Post if you have any questions or need help. And start thread in Project Announcements with lots of pics once you start your build.
Oh, and if you're married, don't ever tell her the real cost.... ;)

I'll certinly start a thread once I understand a bit more what to do. My issue with TV is not so much screen size but the overall size of the TV cabinet because of side speakers . I think I'll need to remove tube etc but very nervous about doing so. Not expecting the Project Arcade book to cover that (might be pleasently surprised) so will lean heavily on forum or other MAME builders in the NoVA area (are there any?)
Oh, and if you're married, don't ever tell her the real cost.... ;)
Ha, Ha - learnt that lesson with my Home Theatre ;)

I emailed the UK publisher yesterday as I was frustrated that Amazon UK is still showing 14 January as the published date but listing it as a pre-order. I got a friendly response to say it's projected publishing date is 14 February 2011 (at least here in the UK) and is subject to change. So disappointed!!
-
Amazon.com says it's in stock, but I don't even have my author's copies yet. I have no doubts it will be shipping in February, but I don't know exactly when in February.
-
Speak of the devil, my author's copies arrived today! Don't know where the production chain is for the rest but they should be arriving soon :)
-
I received this in my email last night. :applaud:

Yes, I got that Email too, what a nice surprise.
-
Woot,
Exciting! Planning on ordering my Cab this weekend and starting button/stick organization process. Awesome! :)
-
Got my copy today, great book so far. One thing I noticed though was the lack of info on Japanese parts. No info on the many offerings of joysticks and buttons from Seimitsu or Sanwa parts, which was a bit disappointing.
-
Greetings from Amazon.com.
We thought you'd like to know that we shipped your items, and that this completes your order.
Shipped via UPS Tracking number: (estimated delivery date: January 26, 2011).

Got mine today.
There is a typo on page 490. Bender's real name is Bender Bending Rodríguez. ;D
-
Got mine yesterday, but I wasn't home until today. Just flipped through, looks good. Over 500 pages of info!
-
I'm told the package came on Tuesday the 25th. We didn't get back from vacation until Thursday.
-
Mine arrived on 25th - so far I like :applaud:
-
Got mine over the weekend, much bigger than expected, and I'm working my way through the control panel chapter in preparation for ordering some buttons/sticks. I especially like the line in the beginning that asks you not to loan the book to friends, you should instead tell them to order their own copy.
Nice! :lol
-
Got mine today.. lots of good lil tidbits from skimming it already.. i am in the midst of my cabinet build.. just layed down the first coat of poly tonite
-
Got my notice. In transit from Amazon.ca

Finished my first skim of the book, now off to construction phases and more in depth reading.
And today I got an Amazon refund of $0.19 due to their Pre-Order price guarantee... Woot, more money for buttons! :D

haha, thanks! It was a secret santa gift at the office. Limited silkscreen print from some gaming-savvy online site ...I figured I'd frame it and leave it on my desk as a tribute. Got my Atari Flashback hooked up beside my desk as well, for some impromptu Yars Revenge, or Asteroids breaks. Though the atari version of Asteroids isn't the greatest IMO. Can't wait till my Asteroids Cocktail restore is done, then it'll be so on! :)

Got an unexpected package in the mail today... Saint's new book! w00t!
Unexpected; came as a birthday gift from my brother-in-law (who apparently knows just what I wanted).
Although my cab is basically done (minus some rewiring I need to do to get the LEDs hooked up), I'm going to enjoy reading this. As for my rewiring? When doing it the first time I managed to wire the LEDs up backwards (wrong polarity). All of them. At least I was consistent. Doh!

Got the book a few weeks back.
One note from me, I'd pay more for a book with colored pictures and the cd-rom is kinda hard to navigate trough..
But a great book, by all means!
:applaud:
-
Yeah, I was disappointed they wouldn't do color photos in the book that's why I insisted on a companion CD with pictures and other stuff.
-

Sure helped alot!
How did you like that CD content? Kinda goes with the retro feel of the subject of MAME..
-
The first book is great. I use to read it just to read it knowing id use the info later. But i have to know, why are you not my friend? :D
-
I never did find out why they put that on the cover :)
-
Ive been gone from the arcade scene for a few years. Whats new in this book. is it worth buying if i already have the old one?
-
A LOT of updates, discussion about LCD monitors, updated vendor lists, and yes its worth it, its only 20 bucks and a good reference.
-
Ok i bit the bullet and ordered it.
-
Just found out about this. Great to see an updated version! Borrowing it from the local library. If I like it, I'll order it at amazon...
-
Hey i dont have the book near me, and im wondering if it has a pdf copy of the book on the cd? if it does id like to load that into my ipad.
-
Ooooohhhhhh. Shiny!
I love the new additions. I will grab the kindle version when I have a chance.
-
Finally got around to looking, the cd does not have a pdf version. :-(
