These days with internet speeds (and bandwidth allowances) it seems hardly worth it to sort through old hard drives looking for files.
Looking for a movie ? By the time you can find the disc you could download it again.
Can't find where you stored your ROM sets, download them again.
I'd bet (like many of us) I have the same file(s) a dozen or so times.
None the less I want to sort out my storage options.
I have a general opinion question.
As opposed to having a folder called "ROMS", I would break up all files under the console itself.
So Nintendo, SNES, N64, Neo Geo, Sega Master System, etc would all be an individual folder.
Inside would be anything relating. ROM files, artwork, videos, etc.
Any thoughts on storing the files like that ?
I'm trying to think of my needs and the problems I run into.
I think breaking it down by console and allotting a specific external HDD may be a good option.
Just thought I would post for some feedback.

LOL -- glad to see I'm not the only one that has a hard time getting going with organizing the files - bought a 750GB. external drive about a year and a half ago that was going to be for that and it is still sitting in the desk drawer with copies of the roms and art files but now is several updates behind the curve so would take longer to organize and update than just downloading an entirely new setup. But one of these days I'll get to it :laugh2:

LOL - JD Fan you are correct !
Even myself I bought 2 copies (don't ask me why) of a Hyperspin set up.
One I bought and put it on a 3TB drive I had. I bought it off a buddy to offset the cost he spent on the drive.
Then months later I end up buying the same image on the actual HDD itself.
I'm told (never tested!) this drive is AWESOME!
U just rename it to "Z" and everything is set up.
Ah well.................such is life in this hobby I guess.
