Title: Knievel's Guitar Hero Cabinet
Post by: Knievel on October 14, 2007, 09:37:44 pm
If you have played Guitar Hero you may understand this project, if you haven't you may not...and are REALLY missing out.

My friends and I grew up in the peak of the 80's Metal era and GH definitely caters to our generation. As a result this game series quickly left everything else in my arcade room collecting dust. I knew I had to take it to the next level..but how?
After some thought (and a few shots of JD) I decided there was only one thing to do...build a cabinet around it!

And here is the result. It's a takeoff of one of the most iconic symbols of Heavy Metal...the mighty Marshall Stack >:D

The cabinet is actually 3 cabinets that can be separated for transporting, if there's a better party somewhere. ;)

The 3 are..

The Bottom -houses the heavy-hittin' Logitech Z2300 Sub and my PS2 with all the Guitar Hero titles loaded on the HD
The Center -is the 27" flat-screen Toshiba CRT TV
The Head -has the Logitech L/R speakers and a backlit GH marquee

Most of the parts used are actual Marshall pieces purchased from an online Amp Parts store.

Now if you'll excuse me.. I've got some shreddin' to do. 8)

Knievel,
Please don't take this the wrong way, but... I love you.

Ha. Seriously. Awesome idea.  I have been hooked on GH and this is a great idea.

The portability is a nice touch as well.  I just went to a party this past weekend, and had to lug the xbox, speakers and projector. :)

Wow... simple, yet awesome :D

That would be an absolute hit in the games room and I bet it gets more use than other machines for quite some time.

Its not all praise though... I seriously have a bone to pick. I've seen your work before, and you really need to stop showing us all up like this! :D

I just beat my first two songs on expert tonight.  What a great idea.  Have you looked into the hack that lets you load any song?  I can't remember if it is a PS2 thing or something for pc.  Congrats!  Also, I saw VH in Cleveland last Wednesday, 10/10, and I must say, I love your Frankenstein guitar!

Thanks guys. :)

Had some people over tonight and they wouldn't believe it wasn't a real Marshall bottom until I opened the door on it. I guess all the details paid off.

I am installing a shelf or 2 inside to get the PS2 off the sub, and for storage.
Also need to make something on the wall to hang my guitars from. They are wireless so I can put them just about anywhere.

mccoy you are way beyond my skill level. I'm sure I'll have lots of time this winter to practice though.
Haven't heard of that hack before so maybe it is just a PC thing? I've got all 3 GH titles on my HD using HDLoader, makes for quick load times.

And what else could it have been? A Kustom tuck and roll?

Great work, as usual. I'm continually impressed by your innovation.

Have you looked into the hack that lets you load any song?  I can't remember if it is a PS2 thing or something for pc.

Holycow, I had no idea you could hack it to load any song... I might have to give GH another look-see now. Look out Wayne Kramer...

Knievel, that is simply bad ass! And I love the Steel Dragon poster.

McCoy, are you thinking of frets on fire (http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/)? It's a PC clone of Guitar Hero. You can use a 360 guitar as they're USB, but you'd need a special connector for the PS2 ones. Here's the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frets_on_Fire) with some extra info. You can create tabs for any song, and many of them exist already.

I just have to say, this is one of the most awesome cabs I've seen. I think it's a great idea for a juke as well. Maybe throw a PC with Frets on Fire in there, juke software, and then get Rock Band. You'll the baddest rockaoke machine ever conceived. Does rockaoke sound lame? I just thought of it.

Wow that is seriously cool. Indeed it's too good to look "home made".

Won't the PS2 with HD have problems being placed on the subwoofer though?

Amazing work as usual Knievel!!!   Outstanding.

I am a huge, HUGE Guitar Hero fan (some may say obsessed), and this is one of the coolest ideas I've seen.  When can I come over and give it a shot?

If you ever think of expanding it at all, definitely look into Frets on Fire as mentioned.  If that TV can accept a PC easily, it would be a great way to add hundreds and hundreds of songs to the game, though with 3 games worth of songs (and with GH3 only a week or so away), you should be set.

Man, that really is awesome work.  I'm sad that I'll never get a chance to see that in person.

oh hell no this thing is amazing!!! hahaha I cannot get over how awesome this is!!

/edit.. if you have a modified ps2 you can create your own game discs. it takes a bit of time and like 5 diff programs to do it but basically (and if I heard a guy here at work correctly) the guy that created the game came out with this software which allows you to edit the actual game image and modify the games that are playable. You have to go through song by song and sync it with the music and such but a guy here has like 4 discs full of all kinds of songs that were not on the original game.

Wow.  You have outdone yourself.  I am obsessed with GH as well and something like this in the house would be incredibly fun to play - especially at parties and stuff.  I hope you can somehow get GHIII on there once it comes out!
Title: Re: Knievel's Guitar Hero Cabinet
Post by: Knievel on October 15, 2007, 10:32:14 am
Thanks, yes we are anxiously awaiting GHIII. Hopefully it will again be compatible with HDLoader.
BTW I do purchase all these games as I want them to keep making them. I only use the HD so I can easily switch between titles, and for the quick load times.

I will have to give Frets on Fire another chance. I loaded it and a bunch of songs onto the Metal Station(which is sitting right beside this one) but I wasn't too impressed with it. Guess I'm spoiled by the real thing. :-\

Neilyboy my PS2 isn't modded with a chip and I'm guessing that's what you're talking about. Sounds very cool though.

Had a couple of e-mail's overnight from people questioning my butchering of a Marshall Stack.
I want to assure everyone that * NO MARSHALL'S WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS CABINET * :)

It was built from scratch in my secret lab. Most of the Marshall parts came from this site..

Lovin' all the comments guys! :)

Had some people ask me about the guitars..and also how I got the graphics on them.

The guitars are the official Red Octane wireless models and have excellent range and no glitches..highly recommended.

The graphics are self-adhesive skins I purchased from an eBay seller. They are made of a nice thick glossy vinyl and he's got some great designs. They were also surprisingly easy to apply.
Here's a link to the seller's auctions..

And here's another shot of the poster hanging next to the cabinet. The light sconce above it I made from 3/4" MDF. For those that don't know Steel Dragon is a fictional band from the movie Rock Star...killer flick. ;)

Very nice.  Those Marshall boxes must have set you back a bit.  Great look.  It looks right at home next to the Guns-N-Roses poster.

What Pinball game is that in the lower left?  Does it take a lot of maintenance?
Title: Re: Knievel's Guitar Hero Cabinet
Post by: Knievel on October 17, 2007, 10:15:55 pm

Oh not too much $. The boxes are just MDF wrapped in vinyl, the piping and the little detail pieces did add up though.

The pinball is an Ice Fever. It has a cool hockey theme with all the sounds, and if you score a goal a miniature puck shoots across the backglass. There's a couple of pictures on my site under 'Other Games'.

Light bulbs are about the only maintenance it ever asks for. :)

Can you explain how you did this?  Where are the seams?
Title: Re: Knievel's Guitar Hero Cabinet
Post by: Knievel on October 17, 2007, 11:53:58 pm

Sorry about that, read your earlier question but forgot to respond..

I put the vinyl seams on the bottom of each box so they wouldn't show. Although they actually turned out to be almost invisible.

Where the corners fold around the front of the cabinet I had to make cuts too. Those ones didn't turn out quite as nice but hey, that's what the corner protectors are for.  :)

The vinyl was attached to the MDF boxes using water-based contact cement..great stuff!

Thanks.

I found a few build pics last night.
Seems some people don't believe these aren't actual Marshall cabinets, even with the interior picture I posted. :dunno

So here are the boxes in their naked state. The last pic shows how I beefed up the front edges to make them look thicker. 3/4" MDF box + a strip of 1/4" thick MDF left me with a nice 1" thick profile. Then I routed the corners off with a 1/2 roundover bit..

Yea...well  :tool:

No the dimensions weren't to Marshall specs..I'm not that obsessed. :)

The TV pretty much determined everything. The width is exactly the same as the TV width, plus the cabinet sides of course. And the height of the bottom cabinet (TV stand) was determined by finding a comfortable viewing height.

Then I sized the height of the center box so the screen would have an even border all the way around. And the top box height was determined by the marquee I'd already made.

I would really like to learn how you created the monitor bezel and mounted the glass to it. Any build pics of that?

The 'monitor bezel' is just paint. ;)

I taped off the screen area on the back of the glass and then sprayed it black.
Easy and it looks amazing. I've done it on a few arcade cabinets too.

Not sure what I'll build next but I'm refurbing a Ms Pacman right now. I'll be posting it soon.

I just put the glass in from the back of the cabinet and then slid the TV tight up against it.

I first applied some thin black weather-strip foam around the edge of the TV screen so it wouldn't scratch the paint off the glass. ;)

Knievel - did you cover the back panels in vinyl too or did you just wrap all 4 sides in one continuous piece (with the seam on the bottom) and then fold the vinyl around the front edges?  I just picked up GHIII so I've been in a GH mood the last few days...

Yes all 4 sides of a box with one piece, then folded it around the front/back edges.

There is a back on the bottom and top boxes, the center one is open to let the back of the TV stick out.

The backs are just made from 1/2" MDF painted black.

Man that is a sweet idea.  I think my limited skills could immitate this too (particularly since I have some old cabs and amp heads lying around that are beyond repair.

The only think left is for you to build your own guitar hero guitar from a real guitar like someone on this forum did....I can't remember who

And what else could it have been? A Kustom tuck and roll?

I think I would also accept Mesa/Boogie.

This is a truly awesome project, Knievel.  And I love your choice of musical decor.  And yes, Rock Star was an excellent movie.

Sadly, I don't have a PS2 or any of that fancy stuff, so I've got to do my shredding manually.  ;)

edit: nice Epiphone, BTW.

Finally found the article I was thinking of regarding the controller.  Should be right down your ally Knievel.

http://toolmonger.com/2006/12/05/how-to-build-your-own-custom-full-sized-wireless-guitar-hero-controller/ (http://toolmonger.com/2006/12/05/how-to-build-your-own-custom-full-sized-wireless-guitar-hero-controller/)

Really a strat style guitar would be easiest as you can find blank pick guards and often they have a swimming bowl route underneath which creates tons of room.

I hang out on Digg a lot but had never submitted a story before.  I saw this thread and thought it would be perfect for digg.  I went to submit the story and LeapinLew had beat me to it.

Although the cabinet is pretty bad ass, I think you lose some street cred with that "Steel Dragon" poster

Knievel, as always you are the man! I have to agree with the Steel Dragon comment though... How about an old school velvet black light Iron Maiden poster! Can't get anymore 80's old skool than that!

Oh my street cred went out the window LONG ago..I've been domesticated for some time now.

Actually the Steel Dragon poster couldn't be more appropriate alongside this cabinet.
When people step up to the thing they are just rock posers looking to 'Live The Life'.:)

Ah.....symbolic!

Nice excuse  ;D

Seriously though Knievel...the cab is very cool.

What did you use for the Marshall logo? Is that from an actual amp or did you make that yourself?

Sort of...I guess. :-\

Happy to report that the GH cabinet has gotten quite a workout this holiday season!

Big NY's bash here tomorrow night and it will be the center of attention. Although I have a feeling it will see more Rock Band songs than GH songs...the ladies love that Jovi tune.;)

I'm stunned at the amount of attention this cabinet has gotten. I've had so many e-mail from people who saw it on various webpages/blogs all over the net!

Even had some people telling me it was just a fake Photoshop job! Guess this cabinet was just a little too polished for them.

Mind if I steal the idea and build one for my wife?  She is a Guitar Hero addict!

During one of my mornings off work over the holidays and while the wife/kids were still sleeping, I managed to catch "The Ramones - Raw" on IFC ... damned if I didn't smile wide and think of this cab when I saw the Marshall stacks on stage.

The PS2 versions of GH don't have Thunderhorse. No dice. :(

Yes it does. It's a bonus song in GH2.

Come on Knievel! I've seen what you can do with your woodworking skills. Why not make your own custom guitar hero controller modeled after your own favorite guitar. I know you can do it! Just borrow one from someone, and copy it. Go to the guitar shop where you bought your marshall parts and get some tuning pegs, a bridge, some frets and some cheap pickups. Get the graphics from the bst board and give it a wicked cherry finish like one of your machines. It wouldn't cost that much more then a custom controller.

I've watched your work and I love it! Keep up inovating and pushing the bar. I like looking back at some of your machines and I think "hmmm that just looks like all the others". No it doesn't look like all the others, you just took what was being done and upped the anty, then others followed in your wake. Time for new work, and time to push it further. Cheers!!!

So friggin cool. Love your ideas. Might even steal a few ideas for a cab I'm planning on building soon. So many great ideas and masterfully pulled off. Inspirational. Thx Knievel!

Steal away. :)

Although this wasn't really an arcade machine I think it's still my favorite build.

Probably my most original idea, and people always go nuts the first time they see it.

Is the cab big enough inside to put your instruments in there for storage? I find that having all the instruments around causes a big mess, especially since they are all wired.
Title: Re: Knievel's Guitar Hero Cabinet
Post by: Knievel on October 15, 2008, 05:18:07 pm

No, not tall enough inside for the guitars. I prefer to show them off anyway. :)

Actually I had bought a couple of black rubber-coated hangers to hold the guitars. The U-shaped ones with a screw on the opposite end.

They'd work well but I didn't have the heart to screw anything to the sides of the cabinet.
