Title: Taito Cocktail Plans *Sketch inside*
Post by: hbm*rais on October 24, 2006, 08:55:43 pm
Does anybody out there know where to find some plans for the Taito Space Invaders Part II cocktail cab or some similar design?

Or maybe some one who owns one of those would be kind enough to take some measures and/or some pictures of some details...

I have looked around the Internet for some time now, but the only thing I found is the rough external measures from the game flyer. And despite the amount of pictures I have, some details are still a bit obscure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Danny,

I've already been to your site lots of times. Your cab is a great inspiration and that's a terrific job you've done with all the references.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any plans/measures to the Taito style cocktails there or anywhere else  :( . I did find the plans for the "thin top" style cab, like yours, and I might give it some consideration if I don't find any info on the Taito.

What I'd like to do is something along the lines of the Corey Feldman Table For Two project, with the removable CPs that can be set in different positions around the table. That would be difficult with the "thin top" style, as it has a very defined place to the CPs. It would require the flat side panels of an adapted Taito style cab for that.

Check this out. Not space invaders, but some good plans for Pac Man to possibly base off of? They do look somewhat similar...

Thank you for the link, Havok, but I think that's the Midway SI. I'm actually looking for this style of cab:

I own that style cabinet,  however it is nowhere near as nice as in that pic. What do you need to know?

Edit to fix pic:

What do you need to know?

Well... Everything  ;D!

Just Kidding. I don't want to impose on you too much. What I'd like to know is the basic external measures of the upper and lower box.

I already know (from the flyers archive) the size of the top and the total height so those are covered.

About the lower box, is it completely made of wood, or is it a combination of a wood frame covered with steel sheet? I've got different impressions from different photos.

I also would like a close up picture of the joint in the corner of the upper box.

Man, really, if you don't have the time for any of this, I completely understand. Whatever information you can put together will be greatly appreciated.

the ones ive seen, the bottom section is made of fibreglass. you could make a reasonable job out of mdf i think, although fibreglass is thinner and thus more room for the goodies inside (",)

if only you could get hold of chablis97:

his efforts would have been perfect for what you need.

hbm*rais,

I was not able to get over there today I had to solve a problem at my daughters school. I forgot that I have tickets for Halloween Horror Nights for tomorrow.

I will get it for you over the weekend though for sure. Your not imposing I will be more then happy to help. I will bring my cam to get pics of where the top and bottom meet for you also.

John,

Don't worry. Take your time. I just want to make a quick model with SketchUp and play around with some ideas to see if I come out with something that is worth building. Nothing urgent.

Danny,

God call. Chablis' model is already a simplification. I'd prefer to start with something closer to the original, but I'd love to have a more detailed look at it anyway. I'll try to PM him.

edit: Maybe Chablis' model is not a simplification of the SI. Maybe is a very faithful model of another cab. I don't know...

Ok,

Here we go,

The bottom is completely metal.

The wood is 9/16 thick

I will start with the top box.

The front is 30" x 7 7/8"

The Sides are 17 7/8 at the top and 15 1/4 at the bottom X 7 7/8

The top of the machine is 24 x 22 1/8 x 3/4 thick

The bottom box.

The front is  24 3/4 x 6 3/4

The side is 12 3/4  at the top and  10 5/8 on the bottom x 6 3/4

The side that has the opening for the coin box to go in, it is 11 1/4 to the outside of the lip/bezel for the coin box.

The measurement for the bottom do not include the extra 1/2 inch of material that is bent out to attach it to the top.

I have attached a few pics. The original Hi Res pics are NOT dial up friendly and their are more then I posted here.

Since they are so large I will not burden Saint hosting them but will make them available in case you need to zoom on something.

And just because I had the camera there is a pic or two of my other machines waiting for me to rescue them and bring them home.  ;D

I moved before I could finish off the control panel on the vertical mame machine.

I used to have the same cabinet!  I MAME'd it and eventually sold it.  Judging by the buttons, yours has another game in it (mine was a Taito Space Invaders).  Your leg mounts are on inside-out.  The threads for the bolts to tighten down on the tube legs should be on the inside.

It'll be interesting to see one of these rebuilt.  They are more complicated than a Midway style cocktail!  Good luck!

TTYL!

It was converted to something called Falcon. It was gutted when I got it and I have not done anything with it.

I intend to turn it into a space invaders eventually, I am on the list for Spacies cool looking glass clips for it already. :applaud:

John,

Thanks a lot. That's way more than I could expect. Tonight I'm gonna hit SketchUp with this measurements and see what comes out  ;D .

Just one quick question: I see you excluded the corners and measured only the main panels. How much you'd say the corners add to the total size? It seems like 1 1/4" or 1 1/8" each.

I did a quick sketch with all the measurements John sent me and a little bit of guesswork. I hope it's useful to somebody.

Nice work,

I saved it and put it on my 'want'  list.

I think I should get around to this in approx 5-6 years, LOL.

Closest to 1 1/4

I had a close up pic of the corners on my site for you. There are a lot more pics there then I posted here.

Hi John,

Yes, I saw that picture after posting. I should have edited my post  :-[, sorry.

I have all the information I need for myself right now, but if you want to take some measurement of the CP's opening and the coin box opening, I can add it to the sketch for completeness sake. It may be useful for someone else.

Thanks again for everything!

Here's some plans I made when intending to scratch build a cabinet. (in the end I converted one instead)

It's not exact size of a Taito cab cos the measurements are altered to fit a 17 inch NEC FE700 monitor I was going to use.

(and I never tried making a scale model or anything, so some measurements might be wrong)

Ok,

The cp opening is 14 1/4 x 5 5/8 and starts right at the very bottom, there is no material under the cp on the front panel it sits on the bottom board.

The Coin box opening is4 3/4 x 5"  inside and 6"x6" to the outside of opening that the box sits in. Also it is 9" deep.
