Title: G4
Post by: MYX on July 22, 2002, 10:34:07 am
MAN O MAN!!! ;D ;D ;D
Last Thursday I was flipping through the channels and found this G4 channel. It might have been there for a while but I never noticed. Anyway this show came on and my jaw dropped. It was Starcade. I have not seen this show since I was 12. It is a gameshow where contestants play videogames to win prizes like a TI 99-4a Home Computer, a DISK Camera or even a programmable robot. The show REAKS of the 80's and the host knows nothing about the games. It is chock full of classic games. The cool thing is that it is a video record of all the cabinets as well.... Cool huh?
I would recomend you all take a peak at the show. You may get ill at how corny it really is, but at the same time, kinda cool.

I saw Starcade on there for the first time last week.  Was the episode you watched the one where the 22 year old guy was matched up against the 3rd grader?  How manly did that guy feel whipping up on the poor kid?  The game up for grabs was Stern's Journey (had never seen it before and it hasn't been emulated yet).

G4 is very cool--unfortunately 90% of the content is geared towards 12 year olds (the EGM or Gamepro crowd).  Is it too much to ask for an Old Fart's channel, a G1 if you will?  Probably.

However, with dedicated perusing a few gems can be found.  Last night had a 1/2 hr. special on the Pac-Man phoenomena, including an interview with the guy who beat the game.  Had some footage on the screen glitching out after he beat it--pretty cool.  The best part was the footage from arcades back then.  Rows and rows of classics--would have made an excellent movie intro to a frontend if someone taped it (not me unfortunately).

Just for fun went to KLOV to find out more on Journey by Stern.  Nothing there.  Did Google search and the only articles mentioning the game was from the Starcade website.  Very interesting.

Game looked kinda cool--sorta like Juno First.  Anyone remember this one?

Hey, if anyone of you happen to make a VideoCd from it, please contact me :D Well, I've heard from the show through an american book I read, we never had such cool arcade-shows here in Germany.
Really would like to see it, always funny, this 80s arcadestuff! ;D

By the way, anyone has the film Joy Sticks on VCD, or even better, the german version on VHS? (hey, US-version on VCD would be enough to make me happy! Unfortunately my former NTSC-compatible VCR went out of order, so I can't play any US-videos anymore)

I tried on Ebay, but it just doesn't appear anymore here, I even can't search for it 'cause its called "Die Vidioten" here, and "idiot" is a forbidden word at Ebay, so it just doesn't shows it if there are any. Have I told that Ebay really sucks sometimes?

Anyway, enjoy the show! :D

That is the beauty of cable. Never ending reruns.

Here's a scarey thought. What if one of those kids on Starcade was a member of BYOAC.

naw...
