I am planning on putting a screen into/onto my pedestal arcade cp (for instruction cards, manuals, etc.)
I know it's been done before...anybody have any good build threads or links bookmarked for inspiration/opinions? (search is kinda difficult with such ambiguous terms)
Thanks in advance!

Well, I suppose I will list projects here as I find them, for posterity.

LCD is RPi driven, assumed-ly to switch from PC to Retro Pi use:

Much closer to what I am thinking to achieve. Good inspiration!

Looked like a wicked concept, but a hit and run that was never updated.

Never showed it working 100%, but the idea is there.

Nearly all of the photos in the thread are dead links :banghead: , but the videos are still working. ;D

My Tron build has a screen mounted in the CP for instructions. The link is in my signature. There should be a number of construction pictures sprinkled throughout but here is the money-shot.

I will say I'm still struggling with getting it to work correctly. Most of that has to do with the fact that computer work is my least favorite part of this hobby.

Thanks wp. I just read through your entire build, absolutely amazing!
What problems did/do you have with it? Just focus issues you mentioned in thread?
Do you use it to display anything other than cipwiz generated instructions? (ie flyers, manuals, etc.)?
Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

Different kinds of displays and info:

Here's what I would suggest from an aesthetic point of view. You are going to need to cover the entire control panel in smoked plexi… if You can't find any you can use window tint on regular plexi. Then you'll want to inset the display in the control panel, with the plexi on top so that when the display is off it doesn't look stupid. I would also suggest spray painting some sort of bezel mask around the display (sprayed on underside of plexi) so that the display has rounded corners or even a more unique shape... that way it doesn't look stupid when it's on. Just my 2 cents on how to integrate it and keep it from looking like a haphazard add-on.

Really the focus issue is the only one I've had. I've got it setup to cycle through the other images in addition to the instructions. The instructions come in handy at parties or even for myself whenever I'm playing anything with more than two buttons. ;D

Thanks guys. I started messing with CPWiz and I think I have gotten the hang of it. CPWizBiz, on the other hand is going to take some serious learning to get it set up with all systems.
Aesthetically, I don't think I will be building the screen *into* the control panel (under the plexi) per se...I will need a reasonably large screen, as the instruction card is rather complex.
I am think of building something in a similar vein to the Atari showcase control panel (or even using one if I can find it cheap) with a rear panel that contains speakers and a center screen. (Note, the machine I will be putting it on is a showcase cabinet, albeit a Dynamo).

Similar size screen that I want to use, on a similar 45 degree angle, no less.

I like the Tron ITT the best. Looks great. Just want to say kudos for trying to advance things. The hobby seems stuck in 2010 and any veering from that gets you some blowback for some reason.
I would look at how to pros (who care a bit about aesthetics and keeping players happy) do it:

Just the stupid ideas get blow back.
New ideas aren't always bad.
LCD advances are good because in 30 or 40 years my CRT's might be unrepairable.
LED t molding = stupid
LED buttons can be good. They are just usually executed badly.
I have yet to see a CP display screen that looks like it is supposed to be there.
It is a good idea, in theory, but it always looks like it is tacked on (except for the Tron cab).
That Tron cab is the only one I like out of this pile. And that is because everything else on it is done well.
And by the way, this "new idea" is an old idea. That Tron can was built like ten years ago.

I'm in the process of building a double wide pedestal with a stand for two crt monitors. I'm using 80/20 aluminum t-slot extrusions for the frame.
The 80/20 extrusions are cheap and very easy and quick to build with. It saves a whole lot of time as no drilling or cutting is required. They're also extremely strong. I used 3" x 1" extrusions to make stand for my CNC machine which weighs over 1000lb. You could use 2" x 1" for an arcade build.
You can cover the aluminum frame with whatever cosmetic panels you like.
Obviously, I need the extra strength to hold heavy CRT monitors but they can easily hold an lcd monitor too. I have an LCD mounted on my CNC machine frame using the Vesa mount it came with connected to an extrusion.

WTF does this have to do with a screen in a control panel. Did you accidentally post here instead of your project thread or something?

I can agree, and mine very well me look "tacked on" in the end. That's the thing, every time I looked at that Dark Legacy cp, I always thought to myself "that should be a screen".

I suppose you could show porn on that screen. That might work.

If you can find a way to integrate it with the artwork/theme then I think it can work. Here’s an example along those lines:

I've seen that cp before...gotta be one of the best artwork integrations ever!
