Title: Happ 1-1/2" Diameter Trackball
Post by: nen10dough on December 10, 2007, 01:14:42 pm

Does anyone have any experience with this trackball?  Yay or nay?  I'm dealing with some limited space and was interested in hearing any impressions...

Look at the price.... $217!   They better be good for that price.  :P

Knowing Happs reputation it should be good. But just look at the offer price they have right now on the 3" Golden Tee High-Lip TB....   $55!!! I know that doesn't help you out though.  :dunno

Yeah, I'm working with a small panel on a cocktail cabinet, so the bigger and more preferable balls are out of the question unfortunately.  Guess I'll just have to take the plunge...

RetroBlast has one of these along with several other common trackballs in their possession and will be doing a trackball roundup that will hopefully be posted sometime in January.

Hang in there, we'll tell you if we think it's worth it.

Thanks, can't wait for the roundup!  As long as the thing functions as it's supposed to I will be fine, but I'm curious to see how it stacks up to the big boys.

NinjaEp - Have you actually used the trackball?  I don't want to preempt the roundup, but if you have any prelim impressions I'd love to hear them.  It's my only trackball option unfortunately, and as long as the good outweighs the bad I'll pick it up.  A simple "good>bad" or "bad>good" response would be enormously helpful.

There have been a few projects posted here with mini-tb's.  Some were small trackball mice, some with the happ mini.

here's a couple links.

see post #36 here 72281 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72281.0)

post #11 here 61679 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=61679.0)

Lost the project thread with the happ mini, but if you search through bartop projects, you're bound to run into a few trackball solutions some members have come up with.
Good luck.

If you do decide on the happ mini - pm ponyboy and/or divemaster (both are stickied in the B/S/T thread) - they may be able to help with the happ prices.

Unfortunately, I've not had the opportunity to even pull it out of the box yet.  Holiday activities have limited my RetroBlast activities over the last couple of weeks.

Ewj - Thanks for the links, I feel a little more confident now that the mini-trackball won't be a complete disaster.

NinjaEp - I hear ya, you and me both.  Looking foward to the article in January.

I went ahead a bit the bullet and purchased this trackball.  I'll try and post impressions when it comes in.

When you do, please make a new post. This one is a bit sad at 11 posts deep and lacking anything resembling a review.  :-\

I have the trackball, but the USB cable is still on backorder so I haven't had the chance to try it out with MAME.

The spin was a bit sticky at first, but I've managed to break it in some and it feels a lot looser now.  It doesn't have the type of continuous spin that big 3" trackballs have, but I think it'll get the job done once I can hook it up.  My experience with trackballs is pretty limited I must admit; I've only been able to play original trackball arcade machines, and those trackballs felt very loose by comparison and would have some extra spin to them when you took your hand off.  This is probably due to the momentum, but like I said I have no experience with newly manufactured trackballs.

Anyway, when I can actually plug it in and play with it I'll post impressions.  I will say thought that no trackball is worth $200+, but I had some extra cash and I'm trying to make my cocktail table the most versitile cab that it can be, and this should do the trick.

Any follow up on this? I know its been three years since this was talked about, but its still something i'd like to hear some owner input about. Its still a $250  1 1/2" trackball....thats still a bit hard for me to shell out for. My space is ultra limited so  :dunno

Just don't know if it would be the same playing Centipede with my finger rolling the ball.
