Title: vector wip.
Post by: zorg on October 27, 2003, 03:24:44 am
As there is more persons involved in "vectorisation"
I suggest we use this thread as a central place for vector Work In Progress

why ?
1) just to know who is working on what. to avoid us to work on the same art and to conflict.
2) to encourage cooperation.
3) to call for detailled pics, closeup of a given art.
4) to let people known what's going on

suggestion for submission.

One post per person.
    * each post should be removed when the vector art is finished and uploaded to the vector library
If a post stay to long (say 3 month) without being updated it will be reported to admins for
      "a deletion request"

    * a post must contain a brief description of what kind of art will be traced

    * a post may contain requests for help.

    * a post may contain request for material but only related for the work in progress
non related request should go to the adquate forum with the adequate title

    * in case of abandon (real life impose some constraints, but call for help before leaving) the work
should be marqued as left, and a link to the current file should be given in order to allow his
      continuation

    * modification and update of the post during the tracing process is encouraged.

    * if no image of the art to be traced is available online, a small image may be attached to the post
but it is better to point to an online source (either by using the image tags or by providing an URL).

    * the same would apply for any image used in order to display the status and evolution of the work

I'm working on the Centipede marquee.   I moved my original post to this thread.

This thing is a detailed monster.

Edit: Updated images to most recent version since I was posting them all over the place today... :)

I've been holding off on working on it for a while.  I'm waiting to see if they can fix some stuff in Sodipodi.   If not then I guess I'll head back over to Illustrator land...  ::)

WIP - Galaxian side art. Awaiting detailed pictures from the guy who requested it.

EDIT (March 2):Still haven't heard from the guy who requested that I do this. If anyone else can provide some detailed pics I'd appreciate it. Otherwise this one might get shelved.

EDIT (March 8 ): Got some usable reference pictures. I started a new thread to post my progress:

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=16905

I'll post again in here when it's finished.

Edit yet again. I totally forgot to update this page. The Galaxian artwork was finished by someone else (I forget who) and is now available to download at the artwork library.

I have purchased a TwoBits kickplate and I still need to update the kickplate and sideart on the archive based on the differences I spotted between the vectorization that I uploaded now and this piece of artwork. Most notably the colors are different (much darker than I assumed). I hope to get the proper colors for the CP since I'm still not sure. Unfortunately I can't find a Galaga cab anywhere in the netherlands so I can only go on the colors I see in photograps and scans.

I'm still working on the Galaga Bezel. I redid part of the work I lost after my hard disk crash, but I still have a long way to go. I guess I'm at 30% right now.
I'm using photo's from General Zod. an upload on the artwork archive and some scans from I'm sorry to say forgotten who put them up. I need all three together to get an accurate picture of how it is supposed to look.

Who is that?

It looks like a character from the "Top Cat" cartoon. Anyone remember that one? Classic stuff.

Do we want to post non-arcade artwork also?
I did the Nextel Nascar logo, not sure if anyone would want it?...

As you can see, also working on players numbers for the CP. I tried tucking in the numbers behind the yellow player stripe, but you you not quickly tell what the number was...

I don't know, someone might use it for arcade stuff. Why not? As long as the library as a whole doesn't stray toooo far. I mean, right now we already have a vector drawing of the smurfs, why not nascar?

Any preferred formats I can convert my vector image to so I can upload it to the vector library? It is currently a (rather large) Microsoft Visio file.

EPS would probably be the preferred one.

Created Bald Bull.
It's a vector version of a bitmap image.
Took a while, but came out pretty good.

I was going to widen the base of the picture so you could see the rest of his gloves and body, but decided not to.
Created for "Kill Bill" Marquee.

In the process of adding to the vector library.

The bezel is being vectorized by MAMu_ using the old MAME artwork and photographs for guidance. I'm hoping he will finsh it soon.

If anyone can accurately match colours (e.g. take a pantone swatch book to your cab or something), that would help.

I'm sort of half-heartedly working on the Gauntlet CPO at the moment.

Have matched the fonts and done most of the typography anyway.

Jakobud's measurements seem to be out - if I distort the image so that the buttons are in the positions he's measured them, then the text at the bottom of the CP that's half-missing in the source scan on the art library would actually fall off the bottom of the panel, and I know it doesn't, and even has a bit of blank space underneath it, hence the button/stick placement is too low - anyone have a real cab they can check?

I'm currently working on my control panel overlay. It's a repeat pattern of numerous company logos. While most logos are already floating around, I'll be adding at least:

old Konami, newer Taito, late-80's Technos, Irem, old "round e" Sega/Gremlin

They may not be that difficult, but if anyone know of any of these that are done already, let me know.

Anyone know where I can find a clean Cinematronics logo (any of them)?

Once I get my own stuff wrapped up maybe I can take requests.

Anyone know where I can find a clean Cinematronics logo (any of them)?

There are logos on the flyers for some of their games here:
http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyerdb&manu=38

Some of the scans there have logos high-res enough to be traced as a vector, even if not really good enough for printing as they stand (e.g. on the Zzyzzyxx flyer).

Rohan has loaned me some art to scan / trace. I'll be getting scans & photographs first. Once I get the scans done, I dont' know how fast I can get to everything, so anybody with an interest in helping let me know.

I have the following VERY good samples. I actually have them in my possession, rather than just pics, etc like usual.

Centipede Side Art (!)
Mario Brothers CPO
DK Jr. CPO
DK Jr. Bezel
DK CPO
Tron Backglass see-thru insert (needs correction, not tracing)
Astro Invader CPO by stern (cool)

I also have a  pile of marquees on disk, which I've not gone through yet.

I finally have regular access to a scanner and will be scanning ~15 marquees, some sideart, 7 bezels, and a few other goodies.  The problem is I have to scan the larger pieces in parts of 3 or more.  Rather than utilize my meager skills in MS Paint(the only program that I use now-no joke-that's how I sketched the Scramble Sideart on the Library), I would like someone on these boards with some ability to seamlessly stitch the parts before they're upped to the Library.
I've already done a test scan of Captain America and The Avengers @300 dpi in 3 parts with very promising results. Anyone interested in doing this?

Post by: rohan on June 21, 2005, 01:05:00 pm
I'm a third of the way done with scanning the marquees.  They are all scanned in 3 parts and each part is 3500 pixels wide.  Once they're converted to jpegs of the lowest compression(highest quality) I will simply upload them to the Library to be stitched and cleaned-up by anybody that wants to do it.  As per Zorg's recommendation, they will be in a single *.zip file.
Scanned so far:
Final Fight
Nova 2001
Kageki
Captain America
Roc n Rope
Quiz & Dragons

More marquees scanned:
AquaJack
Asteroids
Time Killers

I've gotten these down to a single jpg of about 14mbytes each.  Mahuti is still trying to figure out how to host these as his site seems to have a limit of about 7 mbytes per pic.  No guarantees as to when he'll be able to fix this.

I can probably get scans of the CP and monitor bezel for Asteroids Deluxe, since it was requested a while back.  I can also get some high res photos of the CP and sideart, though if you want scans, it will be quite some time before I am in a position to do that.

time does not matter as much.

if you can get scan, go the scan way. it's more accurate and easiest todeal with a good scan than with a mosaic of photos.

Here's a CPO for the unreleased prototype game War of the Worlds...
There's probably not a demand for it, but I thought this posting would be timely considering that one movie with the crazy actor.
If there is a desire for this, then I'll eventually clean it up...someone else is going to have to vector.  This is not a custom one, but an actual mock up I did based on a photo of a proto cab.  The actual pic is about 3600x800 pixels.

I was kinda board last night so I decided to try my hand at this vectoring stuffs.

Just uploaded my first completed vector last night. Its a new version of the tron spinner sticker. I used orel11's raw upload as a base, then once done, I colour matched it to mahuti's finished Tron CPO. Since this was my first true vectorized image, let me know if I did something wrong pleeeeeeeeease, otherwise I'll make the same mistake(s) again .

My suggestion... start with a larger graphic so you can see the details. If you can't see them, you have to imagine them and draw them yourself... and that usually requires someone that's a somewhat talented artist to do.

Were I going to trace a pic... it would definitely not be that, especially for a first time.

EDIT: I uploaded it into the "unfinished" section. It's fairly complete, but there was warping on the original image, and that wasn't accounted for. Usable if people wanna spend a small amount of time fixing it. I'm not up to it right now.

Even though it's extremly rare, i think it would be pretty cool to vector. To atleast preserve the art of it and maybe even let someone else make a reproduction war of the worlds vector arcade machine. Speaking of which, were the roms ever dumped from that game? I don't recall seeing it dumped. War of the Bugs is the closest match, which is really not close at all. completly different game. Doing a quick search through ebay though, i was able to find someone selling an original "War of the Worlds" vector game in good condition under "collectables->arcade" category. According to the seller, only 10 were made. Not sure how accurate that is, but wow.

This isn't necessarily for a cab or anything, but I thought I'd show it off anyway. This is actually my first attempt with a vector program, so I'm fairly happy with the results. Hell, now that I think about it, maybe their will be a Batcade in the future...

Ooh, and I see localarcade has a section of raw photos. Maybe I'll try my hand at turning one of those into vector art.

LocalArcade had a photo of the BurgerTime marquee, so I thought I'd try my hand at it. Any comments or criticisms on the work so far?

And does anyone have any ideas for the interior of the burger patty? The marquee is basically line art and colour shapes, but the burger has a complex, painterly look to it, and I'm not sure how to replicate that in vectors. Some sort of llustrator generated pattern perhaps?

check how the burger was done in the bezel, no pattern generation, just hand and mouse. :D

Has ANYONE finished this "detailed monster"?!?

I'm vectorising some SF and KOF characters for my cab's sideart, and thought it might be a good idea to share here.

WIP:
Chun Li - Street Fighter
Source image thumb:

Next on my list:
Ken - Street Figher
Ryu - Street Fighter
Iori - King Of Fighters
Kyo - King Of Fighters
Mai - King Of Fighters

From what I've seen in my searching, these characters haven't been done in this style/version or to a very high standard of accuaracy.  I you've seen this version of Chun Li in vector, let me know! - anyways I'm about 70% through.

I'll make them available when complete.

I know this was AGES ago, but the mortal kombat logo is available on

Also you'll find the Midway Logo. I've used both of these on my Mortal Kombat dedicated WIP.

Has anyone done anything with an Asteroids Deluxe marquee?  I'd love to be able to print a repro one of those, but the images are so photographic in it's artwork on the marquee, I can't successfully vectorize it using Vector Magic.  Has anyone got a highres pic or scan of an Asteroids Deluxe marquee?

How goes this project Patrick?

I'll be working on vectorizing the NAMCO Galaxian Marquee version in the next month or so.
If anyone has any additional high-res shots of this marquee, please PM me. This is what i've got to work off so far:

9.  TX-1 Marquees.

Depending on your level of desperation, there's a pretty crappy one here (http://arcadeartwork.org/galleries/marquees-mm/tx1a.png). (From the "Marquees - Low resolution" gallery)

Didn't see anything else matching up with what you mention, but the site has some pretty good high-res stuff and my cursory search may have missed something useful that you're looking for.

Thanks for the tip.  That pic looks pretty moshed, but they may have some other stuff I can use.  I see some of the stuff I did on there, and I'm wondering why they filed it under "low res" when the source files are available on the MAME site?   :dunno

I'm working on Chelnov-Atomic Runner artworks, but I only have a few low-res pictures downloaded from the internet. It's more an interpretation than a restoration.

I'm on the way of finishing the marquee, but in order to complete the other pieces, I would need good pictures of the bezel and the control panel.

Here are the ones I have:

Not bad at all, but it's too small :(

Now I know that this CPO is the Data East generic one (thanks Tapule), but it would be great to have a good pic to be able to place the button holes in the right place (and reproduce the stickers).

Is there any kind owner who can provide me good pics, please? Once finished (with or without help), I will upload the files for everyone :). The final result will depend on the quality of the pictures I work with ;)

I just wanted to pop in here to thank everyone for restoring the classics - and not-so classics - to their former glory. I'm in awe of your work, and as a guy who can 'clone' stuff in PhotoImpact and that's about it, I'm extremely jealous of your skills.

Keep up the amazing work!

Marquee almost finished...

I just need to edit the background gradient into photoshop and make minor changes :)

That's the Arcade Art Library -- it has been offline for several months.

You might be able to find what you are looking for at one of the other sites linked in this post (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,17346.msg1372720.html#msg1372720).

This is not to much of a necro bump for the thread but it is for the topic. Just wondering if anybody has any good images or printable Chelnov files for the marquee and bezel. I see the guy working on this last commented on this in 2013 but was hoping maybe he just never update the thread. Have been searching hi and low for this.

Anybody out there have files for Lunar Lander side art and Xevious back splash?  I'm looking to make a Raspberry Pi quarter scale machine and would love to use the best available art.  Also looking for Space Invaders Deluxe Kick plate art.  If are isn't available I would love to have some Hi-Res pics or scans so that I could vectorize it my self.

Thanks ahead of time.
