Title: help with dsl and mame?
Post by: emopants92 on December 28, 2008, 09:50:45 pm
Ok I have DSL linux, and I cant figure out how to get a mame emulator working on the machine. First question is that is sdl mame and xmame the same? also I am a COMPLETE noob at linux, I will admit it. So can someone walk me through how to set up a mame emulator (xmame, advancemame, sdlmame, ect.)?

- sdlmame/xmame are variants of mame that work in linux. xmame is old, sdlmame still constantly updated. you will need the sdl libs from http://www.libsdl.org/ to compile sdlmame.

- there is a working xmame (0.79?) pack for dsl. go to the mydsl repository, find, download, install. it didn't work fullscreen for me or i didn't know how.

- get advanceCD, experiment with it. if it works for your hardware, then install to HD. that's the tiniest linux/mame you can get. last version is v2.6.3:

- advanceCD not enough for you? get lincade:

THANK FOR THE HELP! just one more question, have any tutorials or detailed instructions for installing and running the programs? because I am so lost when it comes to Linux, because I was trying to install sdlmame and I think I did and it gave me a file under my dsl/home files ( I think or something similar) and it had documents and when I tried to read them I got lost at pretty much the first paragraph. So any help to my problem would be great.

thats pretty funny because I just downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and burned it to an cd and put it in the computer. THEN , what do you know more problems! I first clicked use Ubuntu without installing and then it when to the loading screen then it when to a blank black screen and nothing. I left it on for about 4 hours and nothing. So I went to install Ubuntu, same thing I get to the black screen and nothing. So I went to check disk for errors and it showed 11 errors. So I burned the cd again and the same thing happend and now it has error reading boot cd under the cd check. So idk why these things keep going wrong, any suggestions on how to get Ubuntu running on my computer, it an VERY old Compaq 5000us series and originaly installed with windows ME.
