Title: Want a new <insert-subject-here> forum?
Post by: saint on August 18, 2007, 09:23:59 am
Want a forum setup here to discuss a particular subject? Do this:

Post a poll asking if people are interested in a dedicated forum for your subject. Give a good, if somewhat brief, description of what you want the forum to cover. If the subject is already covered somewhere else (either here, or another forum such as KLOV) then point out why you think it needs a dedicated forum here instead of where it's already being discussed.

Then we'll watch and see what people have to say. If there's enough interest we'll consider adding it (many of our subforums came about this way). If not then probably not :)

How about a dedicated child forum off of "Forum/Website Discussion" just for new forum proposal polls?

What's the point ? Every idea for a subforum is torpedoed here anyway....

One day, there might be a clever idea for a sub-forum that makes sense. Hey, it could happen! ;D

IMO the only people that ask for extra subforums are either newbs or people too lazy to do a search. The main thing that needs more work and attention, and needs to be broadened is the WIKI.

Since I humbly dare to not categorize myself under your first section: thank you !  ::)

Actualy, I think that people who do not take the "time/effort" to post in the CORRECT forum are the lazy one's !!!

It has nothing to do with not wanting to do searches, I use it a lot. I just think that there are subforums here that are much less relevant then (f.i.) the two I proposed (Electonics, and Restorations).

I mean, I see THREE Jukebox forums...Why are SK Jukebox and UncleTs Jukebox not subforums of the Audio/Jukebox/MP3 forum ? I NEVER EVER visit either of those two...

Same thing for DOS/WinCab and PowerMAME, why are those not subforums of Software ? Never visit these either...

This is all just MHO of course.

It's the same like filing. Do you save all your files right in the root (or C:\) ?? Or do you create (sub)folders to organize your stuff ? Of course, when you put everything in the root, you can still find everything (??) with a search, but I guess organizing stuff in folders is still a lot easier for most people...

But the bottom line is that it annoys me that every idea is simply turned down in seconds, without giving it a chance for a while....

hehe, no offense meant.

You are right about the support forums, they should be daughter boards of software/jukebox forums. Especially since they are obsolete. To further clean up, the Project arcade forum could be made a daughter board to "Main" - probably even Wiki and website discussion. There just isn't alot of action in any of those.

The main problem with daughter boards though is that most people never even know they are there. They could be made a little more obvious on the front page I suppose.

My problem, along with all of the other detractors, is that more forums just waters down the whole forum area. I'd rather have a screen filled with a bunch of general new posts in "main", then going to 5 different forums to get the same info. Also, the more specialized forums there are, the more newbies will be intimidated from posting.

Very few forums should get added or it will be too spread out. However, many of the subforums here came from user requests and input. Specifically:

Woodworking
Meetup
Consoles

that I can recall. I believe others evolved from user requests/feedback as well but it's too far back in the ages of time.

I leave any of these posts requesting forums up for at least a week or two before weighing in myself, specifically so users can get a good chance to discuss it.

The forums you're mentioning above are an entirely separate subject. Those are all support forums requested by the author or someone with a vested interest and are dedicated to a single product. Anyone in a related field who wants one can ask for one and if we agree on some basic rules (basically what's already posted) I'll set it up for them. Requesting sub-forums is a different beast. I'd be happy, for instance, to see a good electrical forum had user demand been there...

I don't think we can call a poll with 7 (seven) votes representative.

The vast majority of users of this forum never visit this subforum....

They've been disenfranchised.  It's not their fault they can't be bothered to vote.

Or so I'm told.

How about adding a child forum in the projects section for completed projects.  The recent thread about this got me thinking this. -

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=71242.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=71242.0)

How about having people post in completed if they start the post describing a completed project, and if the project is a WIP, then have them post in the main project forum.  When the project is done, have a mod move the thread to completed.  OR - only allow a user to be able to post in WIP (disallow starting a post in completed), and require a mod to move it when done.

Rick

EDIT - I'm a retard and realized what I was really supposed to do!

We did that before and it was universally hated. Opinions?

How to hack mice for trackballs.
Gamepads.
Mice for spinners.
ATX power supplies.
ETC.
Anything that will make our hobby easier to Build Your Own, yet keep the info organized in one place.

Please let this happen.  I know much of what would fall into this category is monitors, but there is so much more that could go here as well.  Perhaps automation would be a subforum of Electrical?

It just makes sense to have Electrical if you have Woodworking.  It covers both bases :)

Any interest for a "repair tips and tricks" section?

everybody has little tips and tricks that make things easier/work properly or have a particular tool that works better than the rest.

I know the search is there and it's spread all over the site, but being able to open up a forum that you can just read through and learn new stuff would be cool.

Perhaps a wiki entry once editing access is restored?   ::)  That would allow for logical organization/progression and links back to related threads.

Also should it be "repair" or "build/repair" or maybe something about "best/favorite maintenance practices"?   :dunno

Can we get a separate forum for these damn bootleg multiboards? I guess it's kosher to talk about them here now, and we've been seeing a lot of questions about them now. Be nice to keep it in one place.

man, where these 412 in one boards on sale somewhere or what??

I don't think there is THAT much of a need for a subforum for multi-in-1's but as long as it's just setup/installation issues... i'm okay with it.

once we start getting into "where to get them" or downloading more games into them...

Can we at least specify a recommended forum to post them in?

This is a good idea. I'll second it.
