Title: Machine Gun... Oil Slick!
Post by: FrizzleFried on January 06, 2010, 03:39:23 pm
I picked up this latest project from a local... it has a bit of a history... at one time it was the infamous Foxen's Spy Hunter and it's likely the boardset inside is the boardset that was stolen by Foxen from Mark Spaeth.  For that reason alone I almost passed on it... but (A) the cab was sold to a different local (Jeremy) along with 3 or 4 other games (including the Turbo Outrun that Foxen basically bullshitted his way in to from me)... making me the 2nd owner since Foxen and (B) There is no way I can tell for sure this is the boardset from Mark or not...as Foxen had tried selling a "complete working Spy Hunter boardset" on craigslist shortly after he stole one from Mark... I decided to pull the trigger.   The $180 price tag wasn't bad either.

The cab itself is in decent enough shape... I wll be needing to get new side art,  but once cleaned up,  she should be fine...

The monitor that came with the cab is a K7000 19" with some pretty noticeable After Burner burn-in... it also doesn't display RED so it will be needing a rebuild.  I just happened to have a Wells Gardner K7300 on the shelf I picked up recently as a "back up"... it should look good in the cab...

The cab has been converted to work with a switcher... at least it wasn't hacked up,  but rather converted with class... using a Wizzy's Workshop switcher adapter...

I've already purchased the proper NVRAM to eliminate the battery on the adapter... I hate batteries... I should have it in my hot little hands in a week or so at the most.  I'm just trying to find time to actually work on the cab... with the baby in the house it's difficult.

I also have a "pop" problem with the audio/lights.  When a light comes on (machine guns/oil slick/etc)... I get a very loud "pop"... and when they switch off I also get a (not quite so loud) pop.  I was told to try to replace the caps on the light driver board...

:D

Cool! I picked up 2 SH cockpit projects in my game haul so I'll be working on SH myself. One of my most wanted games. Hope you enjoy it as much as I'm sure I will! Do you have a spot for it in the main game room, or are you going to sell something off to make room, or are you just going to keep it in the overflow area?

Not 100% sure yet.  I am fighting the urge to build a work shed come tax time and convert the whole garage to gameroom... though it may happen...

Yes...it's pretty damn heavy... easily a bit heavier than a typical Atari cab.  It's amazing how Midway went from nice and light (Pac, Ms. Pac, Galaga, Galaxian, Wizard of Wor, etc) to this heavy bastage in such a short time.

DO IT!!!! Big gamerooms are where it's at! :afro:

Some of these heavier cabs sure give you an appreciation for the nintendo cabs, don't they?

$180 price tag is an awesome deal for that.  Great game and one I'd love to pick up at some point.

I am guessing you picked up from Pr0ks site... gamestencils.com?   I have some on the way,  but managed to jack up my white vinyl as I was pulling the medallion side art off.  What's that mean?  That means I get to yank it ALL off and replace both sides with FULL side art... w00 h00... luckily I managed to pick some up for $75.00... but now I have pr0ks side art extra.  Anyone need Spy Hunter medallion side art?  I'll sell `em for what I paid for `em... PM me.

I used the "wet method" to install the right side art... and regretted it.  There is a 'texture"... lesson learned... still better looking than what was on it.   The left side went on "dry" and it came out much nicer... but again,  both sides look better than they did before.   I also patched up a couple holes including one in the front center under the CPO where some genius decided to put a free play button (uh,  there are FREE PLAY ROM's out there...--bags of cream-filled twinkies--)... overall the Spy Hunter came out quite nice IMHO...

Next project: SUPER PUNCH OUT!
