The game doesn't center the joystick - instead, it heads up-right, and touching the joystick either sends it all the way down or all the way up. There's no way to get it to center, even when there's no input from the joystick.
I found this article: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=296360&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1 (http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=296360&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1)
regarding the problem, and it looks like it's just that MAME doesn't work right emulating Red Baron.
Should I just write this one off? It was one of my favorites at one point - that and Battle Zone. Love the vectors.

Try using the "redbarona" child ROM -- it doesn't have the severe bank that the "redbaron" parent ROM has.

Try hitting F2 to go into the test mode. There you can make a few full circles with your analog stick. Hit F2 to go back to the game. Once you start the game, again make circles with the analog stick until it feels right. Make them slowly if necessary. This solves the problem for me. I will have to try the redbarona rom.

I tried the F2 and circles trick, but it didn't work with redbaron. :dunno

This is weird. I've played the game several times using what I typed above. I tried about 10 times tonight, and it didn't work. I switched it to standard 4:3 without the overlay, etc. and it worked on my first try.
Edit: after the controls were working, I was able to switch the overlay back on and the controls still worked.

Tried changing video modes and they both started banking again. :dizzy:

Maybe try deleted your NVRAM for Red Baron first.

I tried redbarona and it seems to work slightly better but still has the banking problem. I tried the F2 thing too - I wasn't sure what to do there. Do I just make a few circles - as if calibrating? I did move it around a bit, but it didn't seem to do much.
The problem is that it's stuck in a turn/up position, and when I compensate, it goes all the way down/left. There's no place between, so I'm constantly moving either up/right or left/down.

I hit the coin button to start the game and just make big, slow circles with the joystick. I make sure I am hitting every directiong. I just tried now and it was banking when I started but after the circles it fixed itself. I didn't do the F2 thing this time. I can also send you my NVRAM and see if it helps at all.

Did you also deleted the sta (state) file?

I only deleted the NVRAM only when playing around with it.
