Title: Has anyone used CRT shaders on PC version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy?
Post by: TheManuel on November 20, 2018, 11:44:36 am
Hello, all.

I'm considering giving the PC version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy another try with the excellent patch (http://cubanraul.altervista.org/mkt/index.htm) that allows it to be played on modern Windows versions.  However, the reason I removed it from my cab was that it looked horribly pixelated, in stark contrast to the older arcade games running in MAME with HLSL, among other smaller issues.

I was wondering if it would be possible to run the game through post-processing software like Reshade or SweetFX in order to apply a shader to give the graphics a CRT look.

PC (and Saturn) version is based on the PSX version. With the right settings inside of the emulator you can practically instantly remove load times. Wouldn't it just be easier to just use the PSX version?

Hmm, good point.  It's definitely worthwhile checking out the PSX version, especially on Retroarch with a core that supports shaders.  There are plenty of good ones within retroarch.

I'll definitely be considering going that route.  Thanks for the suggestion.

On original hardware the n64 version is the best due to the non-existent load times and an un-gimped Shang Tsung.  Emulated though, the psx version is the best as it has the most characters with nothing removed.

Well no, PC version is the best on original hardware. Its the PSX version without load times or a gimped shang tsung. It just looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on a modern display and its easier to add shaders to the emulated version.

I remember it having serious issues back in the day.  I can't remember specifically what, but I eventually gave it a hard pass.

if you want crummy load times, the Saturn version is your jam.

Emulated PSX version is to me, the best version to play on a PC.  We can all agree that the game.com version was the worst port, right?
