I tried crunchbang a while ago, but the current version is a bit old.
It would be a great back-end for an arcade cab, but are the emulators a bit up to date?
I am currently using Lubuntu, which works well for me.

I have pclinuxos lxde.
One 32 bit with compiled advance Mame .106 and booting up to icewm using about 80 mb of ram and another with 64 bit patched Mame .149 .
The 32 bit version will run on a p3 1 GHz with 256 mb of ram.
A little slow to get going and booted up but afterwords all is good.

The 64 bit version  I'm not too concerned with memory usage but its still under 150mb.
Took a lot of installs and failed attempts at compiling to get it right.
But I think it was worth it.

Why compile?
Isn't Mame in the repositories?
That's why i use Lubuntu, you can find almost everything in the repositories, or add extra PPA's, or install stuff from .DEB files.

I compile because I like having some control over which version of Mame I use and I like not having the nag screen.
