Hey dudes! So, I've made a new video where I discuss which version of Outrun 2 (including coast 2 Coast and Online Arcade) I think is the best, out of all the different versions available. Check it out at the following link: https://youtu.be/WwK2HlKXHJI (I've edited my original post to show the new version of the video, not the one YouTube ruined...)

Great idea for a video Al and I'm really looking forward to watching it all the way through.
I'm interested to see if you come to a conclusion as to what is THE best version of Outrun 2.
As long as that version is playable on a PC via an emulator I'll be happy as I just can't be arsed to hook up old consoles anymore just to play one game. I'm not too fussed about using a steering wheel to play it, or the strength of bloom effects etc but those ending animations are a must have in my book. When I finish a race I damn well want to see those animations as a reward for all my hard work! :)
Happy new year to you mate and hope you're keeping well. Looking forward to seeing all the amazing videos you put out this year :)
-
Thanks for the kind words Gary! Happy New Year to you too mate. Totes get where you're coming from with the whole can't be arsed faffing about getting multiple consoles plugged into the telly thing. I groaned out loud when I heard that the PS5 is now closer to being an actual thing, I honestly think I'm going to be done with buying new consoles after the PS4, the improvements in the hardware just don't justify having to get a whole new system. (Hmmm, dunno how I ended up on this mini-rant...)
-
I hear you loud and clear mate. Just hope the next gen consoles are backwards compatible so you don't need multiple consoles littered around the gaff with half a dozen trailing mains leads and HDMI cables laid bare for you to trip over. I love retro gaming but boy is it bloody hard work at times.
-
What's especially annoying is anything newer than a n64 tends to have a fragile disc drive, hard drive, or both. You buy a snes and it'll still work great in 40 years. You buy a og xbox and you can expect to at least change the hard drive in a few years.
-
Right? The trusty Sega Megadrive I got for Xmas when I was about 15 still works fine today, even though I'm now a crumbly 42 year old.

Yeah, this is one of the main appeal of emulators for me - having all the old systems and games playable on PC, so I can keep all the actual old consoles and games themselves in storage so I'm not constantly tripping up over old wired controller, power and SCART cables and having to keep swapping the video inputs around. It's one of the reasons I don't get the popularity of these new 'mini' consoles, I mean, aren't you just contributing to your household clutter by buying one?
-
Not if you do it right. My tv has two usb ports which I use for power and my nes and snes classic are hooked into a hdmi switch, so it's really one wire considering I use wireless gamepads. They sit in front of the tv and are short enough to where you can see the tv screen easily. You turn them on and they just work and with the new hacks you can just plug in a usb drive to add roms so it's far easier than dealing with a pi/pc.

Excellent video and everyone needs to watch it. It's mandatory viewing.
As for which version is the best, I'll give it to the PC version *ONLY* because of the jam packed content, giving you a lot of replay value. If Coast to Coast didn't have a "Career Mode" with all the extra stuff to do, then the Lindbergh version of OR2 SPDX would be the absolute best version hands down and in some cases it actually is and Ill tell you why...
I just downloaded and applied Boomslangz' FFB plugin to OR2 SPDX in Teknoparrot, and well... let me just say, it's....*sigh*....orgasmic!!!
Seriously, the Lindbergh version now has the best FFB of *ALL* versions hand down! Steering torque is there. Vibration is there. Collision effects are there. Everything is there and it feels *EXACTLY* like the actual arcade machine. It's amazing. I just can't stop playing the Lindbergh version. Reaver(Teknoparrot's author) has his own FFB in OR2 SPDX and I used to play it thinking it's OK but not quite there. But with Boomslangz' plugin, it transformed the game into the real deal!
Get Boomslangz' plugin and play OR2 SPDX in Teknoparrot guys. You'll thank me later.

isamu I've been trying to tell Mr ThunderPants that he needs to try OutRun 2 SP DX in TeknoParrot asap so he can appreciate all it's fruits and overall loveliness. He just looks at me blankly and mumbles something about Windows 7 being the latest and greatest and that if he 'upgrades' to Windows 10 then it will only make it easier for Bill gates to view his ever growing Pr0n collection. Maybe if we both gang up on him together we can finally talk him round. I've made it my personal mission and new year's resolution to get him to upgrade as I want him to enjoy the definitive version of OutRun 2 before he disolves into dust due to old age and bloodyminded stubborness!

Is Lindbergh networking in the public build of TP yet? I want to setup some networked OR2DX :)

Hey man, I told you about my porn collection in confidence!

The jig is up ThunderPants! We know about your pr0n collection mate! :lol :lol
Seriously though man, if windows 10 is the only thing holding you back from using Teknoparrot version of OR2SP then you're missing out bro. I was adamant I never EVER upgrade to Windows 10 after loving 7 for so long, but my desire to play Forza 7 and Horizon was too strong and I finally gave in. It was worth it! 10 is faster and more secure. Games run better as well. I've had NO issues whatsoever. There's even a program called "Classic Shell" that transforms W10 into 7 aesthetically and you can't even tell the difference. Trust me mate get 10. You won't regret it

OK, consider me converted!

Oops, i should have as well that i watched the vid and enjoyed it. Great work as usual.
And yes, to jump on the bandwagon, Win10 beats Win7 hands down. Go grab it :)
-
For the record I really like windows 10. I don't think it's a necessary upgrade.... 7 works just fine as well, but in a case like this... yeah man, go ahead and buy a key.
BTW, did they ever fix the remaining graphical issues with 2 SDX? My pc isn't setup to run them atm.
-
No.
The black textures only happen if you are in behind car view when its loading the next bit of stage
I actually made a hack the other day to automatically change view and back after loading to avoid this issue. Its kinda lame but works

Is networking confirmed for the paid version? I hadn't seen that.
-
Not only that but there's a bad bloom issue I forgot to mention, which to me is a bigger offender than the black textures issue. At least the black texture issue can be resolved with a view change.
-
OK, consider me converted!
'Perverted' more like, Bill Gate's words not mine. Your Pr0n collection is all anyone's talking about over on the Microsoft TechNet forums!

Boomslang does the black missing textures only happen on certain stages? I know I had that problem way back when it first appeared on TeknoParrot but I've applied many 'patches' etc since then and had a fair few playthru's recently and didn't get any gfx corruption or missing roads like I had originally. If you ever feel like sharing your hack I'd be interested in seeing it/testing it etc ;)

Hi Pooterman, which patches are you talking about and where can I find them (if that can be shared here, probably not ;) ? I still do have the black textures for example in the Yoshua stage, all trees are black...

So, over 20 emails later and much reassurance that the YouTube technical team are 'looking into it', I've realised that nothing's ever going to change with the video, so I've made the rather heart breaking (in view of all the positive comments and interaction it'd received) decision to de-list that video and start again... :badmood:
This is the EXACT same video file, the only difference here is that I uploaded this to my Google Drive first (for the YouTube technical team to so-say download and look at) before I decided to try exporting it into YouTube to see if the correct resolutions would show up this way.
I've got a bit of plea here: If you were one of the people who were kind enough to leave a positive comment on it originally, please can you go back and comment again, give it a thumbs up, share it, anything really that'll help it get noticed by the YouTube algorithm to try and help it get noticed, so it doesn't languish in no views hell. Thanks in advance if you do - you're ace!

Nice one Mate! Greatly appreciated!

I'd rather invest in more PS3, PS2 and Dreamcast stuff than spend money upgrading Windows. F*ck Bill Gates. I'm going Android for my next emulation system.
The PS3 has the best version of all the driving games I like. The PS2 has the best shooting games (by miles).
My pc is ok for emulating old arcade games from the 80's and 90's but anything later seems to be a permanent work in progress with little actual progress. And, most of the emulators for later arcade stuff are a pain in the ass to use.
The PS3 / PS2 are plug in and play. Everything just works and, for the most part, games / emulators are complete.
I can't seem to get excited about anything newer than the PS3. It's probably because I already own more content than I would ever have time to play. I still have unopened PS3 games from 10 years ago. The incremental improvement with PS4 Pro and the latest PC stuff is just not enough to justify new investment in hardware for me.

Funny you should say that, I've just fairly recently made a video on this very topic: https://youtu.be/-2dnGTn_hjg
There were indeed some awesome on rails shooters on the PS2, I've been playing a few of them recently using PCSX2. The PS3 with PS Moves is pretty awesome for stuff like that too though, there were some really top notch ports of Sega's House of the Dead 3 & 4 (and Overkill) and the excellent Namco shooters Dead Storm Pirates, Time Crisis: Razing Storm and Time Crisis 4. Well worth checking out if you're into gun games.

Good news everyone! -The Lindbergh version of Outrun 2 SPDX now works on Windows 7: https://youtu.be/JCLim5zelpI :applaud:
-
Oh man, I know that makes you VERY happy mate!
Now you can start working on your next vid.... "OR2SP Linbergh VS OOA PS3...The differences and which one is better?" :burgerking: :afro: :burgerking: :afro: :burgerking: :afro:

Ha ha, you know it's going to happen
Edit: Actually that'd be a pretty open and shut case. The main thing Outrun Online Arcade had going for it in the past was the fact it was the best looking version of the game, had FFB for wheels and the missing end of goal animations. Outrun 2 SPDX has all those things, plus all the OR2 stages and more music. Now I've actually got to play the game for the first time ever, I've noticed as well that the volcano eruption in SP tracks Goal A is a bit halfassed in OOA compared to OR2 SPDX, where the whole screen shakes and a massive plume of smoke billows out with some accompanying SFX. In OOA it just sort of quietly smoulders. Likewise, the shuttle take off SFX are missing in OOA.

Good detective work! I'm just waiting until they get online working then it'll be perfect!

Hey guys. Just wanted to give a small PSA regarding OR2SP DX. Someone posted this in the TeknoParrot discord a few days ago....
_____________________________________
> my friend last night showed me you can unlock OR2's continuous (15 stage) mode via the test menu (need to point TP to JenTest and enable test menu mode)... freakin awesome. i only made it to stage 10 (on my first attempt; left at normal difficulty).

This was my reply.....
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hi guys. I just wanted to chime in and give djfil007 a sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU for exposing this tip to us! I had no idea OR2SPDX had the 15 Course Continuous tracks hidden in there. That is amazing, and will just add even more replay value to the game.
Furthermore, now that I know how to access the test menu, I played around with it and increased the strength of the FFB motor from 80% to 100%. Now I don't know if it's just me, but on my DD wheel it feels much better and a lot closer to what I expect a strong arcade ffb wheel to feel like. That small 20% increase makes a big different and it seems my wheel now rumbles on parts of the tracks that I don't think it did before(ie off road dirt sections, etc). *I admit this could be placebo on my part*
Anyway a humble and sincere thanks to jdfil007 for mentioning the test menu trick. Good lookin' and much appreciated my friend! :notworthy:
