ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! Games played so far: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html)

Game Name : Black Tiger
ROM Name = blktiger
----------------------
Settings: Default
Controls:
8-way, 2 buttons - Fire & Jump
Black Tiger, known in Japan as Black Dragon, is a 1987 platform released for the arcade by Capcom. The player controls a barbarian hero who jumps and fights his way through a variety of colorful, enemy-packed levels. The sprawling, eight-way scrolling, two-dimensional levels are packed with hidden bonuses to encourage and reward exploration. Though a percentage of these bonuses consist of advice, most come in the form of "Zenny coins", currency that allows the player to buy such items as an upgrade to their weapons and armour, keys for treasure chests, and anti-poisoning potions. Special items that reveal coins, upgraded armor, full vitality, extra lives, extra time, or simply bonus points may be found by attacking certain walls. The player's vitality bar will also increase up to three times as a reward for reaching score benchmarks.

Get the ball rolling with 268k. I really loved this game as a young person, and got to know it pretty well.
* there are two kinds of jumps - instead of just jumping left or right you can push up (or nothing) and then move left or right when he is in the air for a little more height and less distance.
* the jump above is useful for falling boulders. I step back from the boulder a bit, jump straight up, then over it after it lands and bounces a couple times.
* remembering where the flytraps and boulders are is very useful.
* same with hidden symbols in walls. Some are armor, some give points, some give vitality bar, some 1up, etc.
-
@popsicle: years ago I recall coin-pushing to an ending that was under 200k. How did you get that score?

I liked the theme, but didn't care for some of the execution, especially the interiors of the B and T, which look cheap like those pictures a kid in school would draw of skanky women with terrible perspective.

According to the strategywiki, by smashing certain walls you can find items that are worth 10k points, 50k and 100k. The rest will probably be hacking and slashing :)

Yeah, not sure about the scoring. I can't seem to find any discussion about the Japanese version (Black Dragon) with differences in scoring, only ramped-up difficulty with more boulders, higher prices in shops, and tougher boss fights.
Better run last night

Oh, this is one of *those* games.
Those games where you need to play a lot in order to learn a lot so that cheap monsters don't jump out at you & zing you.
Hmmm...my strategy is to go for the coveted Lowest Score Achieved on the First Effort statuette + gift card angle.
9,550 eentsy weentsy points

Interesting. I've actually never played this game (though I've heard of it). Looking forward to giving it a go...
-
Looks like I'm having my own party. Going to try to 1cc this thing before next Sunday.
C'mon people! This is a great game, with cool music and lots of atmosphere. When you know the enemy patterns (and listen for falling rocks) it's not that bad. Buy the best weapon you can as soon as you can. I usually only buy the lowest armor until I have the best weapon.
There's a hidden object immediately to your left when starting the game. Shoot the wall at ground level.

I’m going to try this tonight, how many credits can I use :-\

Assuming that this is a serious question: one, of course. Assuming that this is sarcasm: Still one.

I can't stand the music. I think it's atrocious. Therefore I play with the sound muted, which makes it a bit harder since I can't hear the boulders falling.
There's a hidden object immediately to your left when starting the game.
...which is utterly useless because it's a time bonus that you won't need.
Shooting the wall to your left when entering the dungeon... 10k.
Shooting the wall left to the shopkeeper... 500 zenny.

Well, there's no accounting for taste.
Fun fact: Ernest Cline (Ready Player One author) lists Black Tiger as his favorite video game (https://readyplayerone.fandom.com/wiki/Black_Tiger).

I am a very rusty gamer... going to have to take another run at this :lol
My picture is blocked by security, anytime there’s my machine has a game onscreen it gets blocked.
Work around?
-
These are the restrictions if you use the forum as a host.
Allowed file types: txt, jpg, gif, pdf, png, zip, rar, jpeg, skp, svg, ai, gif, 7z
Restrictions: 8 per post, maximum total size 10240KB, maximum individual size 4096KB
Perhaps your pics are bigger than 4 mb, that would get them blocked. So, load them into a graphics program, scale them down and try again. This might also get rid of your 'my pics are rotated' problem.

Sounds like it might be the same issue that Malenko and Jimbo reported here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,160116.0.html).
Malenko was able to upload it after resizing the image down by 3%.
In Jimbo's case it definitely wasn't a file size problem.
I got this today with a 335.6k jpg
There's info about image rotation and the related security issues in this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,159784.0.html).

FWIW, when I shoot the wall to the left... there is a red item in there that when I pick up ... does nothing. ZERO points. Not sure what it does. My best score is about 12,500. I've played a total of three games thus far. It's an entertaining title... but there is no way in hell I'm reaching 100K let alone 1M...
EDIT: Well, if I actually took time to READ what I am responding to I'd see that it's a TIME BONUS.
I'll post my best soon... don't expect much.

96,450. Not sure if I want to continue playing this. Playing bigger and bigger levels repeatedly only to get killed by the first boulder/plant/bat that I don't anticipate gets old fast. Oh, and I hate that fonking jump done by pushing up and then left/right. It's difficult to do with my 360 pad and sadly required at some points.

Man... I suck. 28,500 or so is my best.

Boulders are often visible hanging out at the top of the screen, and also give a warning sound when falling which is enough to pull back away from them (you can also run right past and under them if the land is flat).
You don't have to push up, rather just jump without moving and then push left or right when in air.
-
Got through it all on one quarter (I think I may have done this once before at Crystal Palace arcade in 1987). I wish there was a little more interest on this title, but sadly it doesn't seem so.

Damn 8)

There's no such thing as bad press. Black Tiger is generating lots of posts.
Way more than Space Encounters did.
I'm just grumpy because this game is cool, but I haven't the time to practice and learn how to get good at this style of game. Just quickie twitch games for me these days.
Thanks,
Jason

That's what mine reads (3 lives, difficulty 5 'normal').
By octopus do you mean that orange jack-o-lantern looking thing? :lol
Funny, I never saw that strategywiki and also thought the time extension 'bamboo' looked like a potato or mountain or something.
btw, there is a jump on level 7 towards the end that I've only been able to make by holding diagonally (not jumping forward or up then right). You'll know it when you see it, I think. Maybe that means there are three types of jumps?

I can't even beat the first level on this game. :'(

Do that. We are in sore need of players.

Take a look at the strategywiki, it has a walktrough. Once you know the locations of the enemies, the first four levels are not that hard.
-
I loved this game when released. Next-level. Played it a few times, watched a bit more. I should have checked my score folder. My high is 183k, of which level I don't know. I may have coin-pushed this, or maybe Magic Sword, some years ago and didn't take an image....
This comp has more players than in a while. Of course taunting yam brings him to the fore.
this one was over before it began!

High score competition #215: Magic Sword. Guess who sicced that one on us? Right. popsicle. Guess who won and who came second? Right.
Of course, pops had a head start there, too.

It embarrasses me that there are some who are improving their scores by more than my entire total.
I've never been much of a scrolling platform game fan...

Man, you sound almost bitter. Is there a 'need an enema' emoji? :D
Just messing, Yam. You are my old school video game high score hero! Can't wait to take third in the next one and choose Mystic Marathon again xoxo

Little better

...damn you. Now I have to try again.

I should probably play again. Time is in short supply these days, though. :-\

To be fair, that isn't so difficult in the later levels. That jump in my score mostly was from getting one secret item.

Nah, I'm good. I keep playing for the challenge. This game in particular I don't care for much, what with the levels getting bigger and bigger and having to play through them so many times just to get a little bit further into the last one. If this wasn't one of your favourite games, I probably would have had the high score by now and wouldn't have to play it anymore. So you are to blame :)
Fun fact: The first time I got to level 5, I thought that I had played the game before and somehow forgot what levels 1-4 looked like. Then it went click and I realized that there's another compo game that has a very similar level. A game which I also didn't like very much. Mystic Sword, successor to this one.
Can't wait to take third in the next one and choose Mystic Marathon again xoxo
That one was before my time, but I distinctly remember that it managed to piss me off in the short time I gave it while testing thousands of games in my romset. So, sorry, you will never be allowed to make third place again ;D
-
408,500. Level 6. Now it's getting harder. Especially if you can't afford to buy the best weapon because you have to spend the zennies on armor.

another try
-
I average 70-80k, which is what I got last game.
@Frizzlefried: it's a journey, and not Shinobi, so it should be fun learning.
@yam: um, okay. What are you gonna do?...kiss me? (((8;) There are plenty of bonus armor and 1up spots, so one shouldn't need to buy armor. Oh, and having no armor after defeating the boss gives you at least two armor class.
-

That's true for the first four levels, but the enemy per square inch factor ramps up at level 5. If you don't know levels 5 and 6, you are better off buying some armor so you can survive a few hits. That's at least how it works for me. Once I know the level layout by heart, I won't need the armor. But that's not going to happen in the next two days.
-
Ran through this again this morning and managed to go a little slower on the last few worlds to increase my score. I did run out of time once, but I only lost one other life (boulder).

won't let me post without text

Steady improvement over the last three games. I used to wait to buy anything until I had 4800 coins, but have early on been buying the second weapon. Last game, I wasn't able to make 4800 after buying the second weapon, coming up a hundred or two short before dying early in level four. This game I somehow was doing well enough that I was at 5223 coins at level four, and was able to buy the third weapon, which makes short order of the purple-robed ghoulie. But I made a lot of goofs, only partly because I don't have the level in memory (I missed the 500 coin from the ghoulie because I couldn't get the jump right before it went away....). Looks like I'll be picking the next game.

Well, I thought I could come in and steal 3rd, but instead I just remember why I had deleted this from my cab.

This game doesn't deserve deletion. It's cool as hell. At the time when it came out I thought it was refreshingly different than anything else out there at the time.
I keep on trying but can't even crack what I scored last, not to mention get close to 3rd

This game started to click a little after I allowed myself to use continues. Fairly console-like in some ways. The weird jumping and pits everywhere pissed me off but I can see how someone could get good at this game.

Fixed. Dunno how this can happen in the age of copy & paste, but I am able to find a way
