Title: MAME cabinet ventilation

Are fans on the back of the cabinet necessary, or is it adequate to have a slot cut out in the bottom and top of the back cabinet panel
for air intake/exhaust?

What I would do is leave the PC in its case and use some flexable dryer vent type stuff to get the heat out of the cabinet. Attach it to the exhaust fan on the back of the case and route it to one of the top vents. That will get warm air out the top and draw in fresh air from the lower vents. Keeping the case on retains the forced air cooling for the HDDs and such.
