Title: Is this too much retro?
Post by: leapinlew on April 22, 2019, 07:55:20 pm
Saw this on facebook. Dude recreated Pizza Hut in his basement! I'm torn between totally badass and terrible utilization of space. I can't decide. What do you think?

It could be me... pizza hut wasn't a place that held memories. Showbiz pizza maybe, but we rarely went to The Hut.

I was going to make an Arcade1Up joke, then I saw the group you got the photo from. :-)

The Pizza Hut near here had a Nintendo Red Tent.

No different than spending 11 grand on pinball machines in the last 2 or so years.

We've got a Billy Bob's pizza palace here in WV... one of the few places that still has a Rock-afire Explosion.  Needs some serious tlc though.

I thought for a millisecond about putting arcade1up in the title but it’s been so peaceful.  :)

Needs one of those weird jukeboxes that played squiggly lines on CRTs that pulsates with the music.

Advertised as 3/4... Actually 2/3. ;)

Went to Pizza Hut a lot - especially because of Book It.

Ha! Same here. I remember always wanting to play the one or two games they had at the local one.

I would never do it, but it strikes me in the nostalgia nerve pretty hard. I think it's awesome. lol

Pizza Hut was our local pizza joint, with a couple arcade machines. So feels to me like Chuck E Cheese might feel to others.

the pizza huts, and pizza inn's that i went too,  mostly had  cocktail tables
for games.

These were good for playing while waiting on the pizza to come out.

I'm pretty sure i played a lot of pac-man, might have seen centipede also.

It is awesome if you really love Pizza Hut.  A lot of us do weird things to our basements that aren't for everyone but we think are super cool...

I wonder if he has the capability to make pizza down there.  I don't think I've ever eaten at a Pizza Hut - I'm definitely a pizza snob living right outside NYC.

Way till you get to Chicago where the pizza is actually good!

Go on vacation to Italy. You'll never look at pizza or coffee the same way again.

I prefer Chicago style or regular deep dish.
My buddy makes a decent Neapolitan pizza however. He uses a half inch steel plate in his oven. Crank up the heat all the way and prop the door open with a spoon to fool the thermostat.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190423/aa79ef481866debf55593e19f8446e95.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190423/b1ba975dedbd551b94e8ad135068e698.jpg)

I love Chicago pizza!  I like NYC pizza better though.   ;D

Go on vacation to Italy. You'll never look at pizza or coffee the same way again.

I spent a semester in Italy a long time ago - loved the pizza there too.  So tiny and fresh!  Love it.

I'm not a coffee drinker though (or espresso like they drink like crazy over there).

I've had pizza in Chicago and New York.  I still find places in Tucson I like just as much.  Mama's Famous Pizza is probably my favorite and they advertise as an "old school New York pizzaria".  The pizza is so large I usually can't eat more than 2 slices.  Oddly enough the pizza at the Quik Trip gas station is actually pretty good.
Title: Re: Is this too much retro?

The real key is to use good ingredients. Pretty much any style of pizza can be fantastic. Pizza is simple. People try to make it complicated.

Whole milk mozzarella, a little grated Parmesan on top.

Crushed tomatoes for sauce with some garlic and a tiny bit of sugar. I grate an onion into the pan and brown it before I add the tomatoes.

The dough depends on the style of pizza you want to make. My Chicago style is a butter crust. The others are just simple flour, salt, water, and yeast.

At least for NY pizza, the ingredients don't matter as much as a really aged pizza oven and the NYC water used to make the dough - gives it a unique flavor that you can't duplicate.

Ever walk in a room and it smells really bad but the guys sitting in there don't think anything smells bad cause they got used to it.....same with the New York water... :)

Same thing in every urban area I have been to. When I get off the train in Chicago it smells like straight up ass and exhaust everywhere except the lake front...sometimes it smells better there.

New York is cleaner than Chicago though. And less of a shooting gallery.

If you made an Arcade1Up Pizza Hut, it'd have to have booths and tables that come up about to your knee...   :lol

Looks good. No one asked where the games were....

We rarely went to Pizza Hut, but that's where I first saw Galaxian and Phoenix - both cocktails, different times as they had room for one machine.

I like good pizza, especially certain types of crust, but my body doesn't, so I don't eat it. Keeps me lean and mean.

Yes it looks cool but do those booths really look like something you'd actually want to sit in?

I remember pizza huts horrid grease-covered cocktails.  I pity the poor people that had to service those machines.

Pizza Hut used to be pretty good and not cheap like 25-30 years ago.  There's one in San Antonio that still has a functional Pizza Hut Pete neon.

They've gone through considerable decline probably as a result of the race to low prices. Good pizza is not cheap. The "red roof" dine-in model is also dying. Of the 4 Pizza Huts here, only one of them is a dine-in restaurant now. The other 3 are just carryout/delivery hubs.

I actually liked their P'zones but they stopped selling those a few years back.

Years ago Australians knew nothing about good coffee or good pizza.  Pizza Hut seemed pretty good back when I was a kid and they were probably ok compared to the mess they became many years later.  We became a nation of coffee fanatics thanks to strong Italian influences in our capital cities.  In Melbourne's Lygon Street there are dozens of espresso bars, cafes and pizza restaurants run by Italians.

So now I'm a coffee snob, but don't hate on me it's not my fault!  A double espresso shot in a properly heated cup with a fresh orange juice chaser - yeah baby!

I am not a pizza snob. I enjoy wood fired stove pizza and party pizzas. Just depends. I just didn’t realize Pizza Hut was part of many people’s arcade experience.

I hear a lot of people connect Pizza Hut to cocktail cabs. I first played Mr. Do at a PH near Disneyland.

The Pizza Hut by me had a Wizard of Wor cocktail at one time when I was little. It also had a Frogger for awhile. When my kids were little that same Pizza Hut had a Daytona USA and a Neo Geo 4 slot. We still go to that Pizza Hut and right now it has a police trainer.

Pizza Hut has been assembly line pizza since at least the 80s. They all were. Slightly different flavor, same junk.

I remember the cabs and cocktails mostly being in an entry-area and not somewhere were people brought food while playing.

The 'lobby', or a corner off the main dining room.

the Pizza hut by me has been there since the 80's.
In the 80's it made my stomach feel icky from all the grease.

I went there and a few yrs back and it still made me sick to my stomach from all the grease.

would rather eat little Caesars.

It used to depend on the type of crust. Deep dish had a few good squirts of vegetable oil in the pan to keep it from sticking. Lotsa pressure and elbow grease cleaning those. Thin and hand-tossed pans got a light spray from the can.

Must have been a thing for people that grew up in the 60's and 70's.   Not unlike having an arcade in your basement if you grew up in the 80's.

I thought the 50s was the peak of Diner Time. In some states, there apparently are many.
