Post by: scotthh on April 04, 2007, 09:36:35 am
What is the connector that plugs into the Opti-Wiz called? And where can I get 5 of them?

Those appear to be the same type of connector usually used for computer case LED connections to motherboards.

As far as where "ELSE" you can get them . . .   ???

Tiger, that's exactly what it is.

This looks like the part:

Now to find a local source in the NYC, Westchester area...

Try a local mom and pop type computer store where they build the computer to order.  They should have lots of leads in the shop.

I just ripped a handful out of old PC cases.

What, you guys don't have a PC graveyard at your house?

I bought a kit at Microcenter that had about 5 or 6 different color cables like that if I'm seeing the picture correctly.  You use them to connect the motherboard to the front panel for the power/reset buttons and LEDs for the hard drive and power indicators.  I think it was just a couple of dollars.  If you dont have a Microcenter locally, you can try online.

These are the exact Molex (http://www.molex.com) parts:

The six connector plug to mate with the Happ Trackball 03-09-2061 (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/datasheet.jsp?ProductID=93196&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&channel=Products&Lang=en-US) $2 at Radio Shack.
The four conductor plug on the Opti-Wiz: 50-57-9004 (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/datasheet.jsp?ProductID=91537&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&channel=Products&Lang=en-US) free sample from Molex.
The two conductor plug on the Opti-Wiz: 50-57-9002 (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/datasheet.jsp?ProductID=91539&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&channel=Products&Lang=en-US) free sample from Molex.

I didn't realize I needed Crimp (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/viewlist.jsp?Fam=terminals&channel=Products&Lang=en-US&FT_253=2357&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&Itemlist=23649,23653,23654,23655,23657,23658,23659,23660,23661,23662,23663,199844,199845,199846,199847) Terminals (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/viewlist.jsp?Fam=terminals&channel=Products&Lang=en-US&FT_253=2360&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&Itemlist=23674,23675,23676,23677,23678,23679,23680,23681,23682,23683,23684,23685) inside the little plastic housings. Without the $200 Hand Crimper (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/products/datasheet.jsp?productid=21397&BV_SessionID=@@@@0078906430.1176410073@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddkjdjdhmecflgcehedffgdfmk.0&channel=Products&Lang=en-US), I butchered the crimps on the big six conductor plug, and I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to do the little ones either.

Thoroughly dejected, I emailed Randy at GGG (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/) who said he'd make a special version of this cable (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66&products_id=261) for me for $15. If you have access to the crimper, you could make this cable for about $5 worth of parts. I didn't and I think this a fair price for a cable with a professional finish.
